that's 2 time NHL Stanley Cup Champions ... just like they were in 94.
The natural comparison is to Roman Wick, and there's some truth to that. Wick's bigger and had similar international success, but he was never the best player in the NLA, and Wick's hands and shot aren't anywhere near Brunner's level. Style-wise, it's like comparing Milan Michalek with Milan Hejduk I would say.
I would say you're right though, that our prime opportunity to attract these players has passed. We're only one year removed from signing Da Costa, who was basically handed a two month audition as second line centre, and now appears buried by the depth which has developed. But we still do have legitimate holes in terms of pure talent in the top six, particularly at wing, and a guy like Brunner is probably a more reasonable (and maybe realistic) than other names tossed among regular UFAs.
Now that the Wheat Kings have fired Clouston and the Oilers have let go of Renney, a "Clouston to coach the Oilers" headline would be a fitting story to ensure that Oilers remain the most pathetic franchise for another 2+ seasons.
I wonder what Clouston did to lose his job after only one year. I wonder if a little success went to his head and he's now convinced his approach works. He was demanding in Bingo, and got promoted to Ottawa. He was demanding in Ottawa and had some success until the players turned on him for holding them accountable. Back to junior where the coach has absolute power. Yes! .... Ooops.
If they add a top-6 forward to the roster, I'd rather see them package up some of the forward prospects they've amassed and land an established player who has a few guaranteed years left in them. They've done surprisingly well for themselves in terms of patchwork solutions, but if they're already bringing in talented but unpredictable elements like Silfverberg and Zibanejad, then I really think a known quantity would be a welcome balance.
-Heatley's girlfriend was becoming a distraction to the team
-He pissed of the owners of local Italian farm, and since this farm allegedly deals corn to ownership/management, it was necessary for Clouston to seek a change in scenery.
Clouston's greatest achievement as a Sens coach may have been convincing Dany Heatley to leave before he started to suck balls.
Locked up $700 and 2nd place because the Devils won in 6 for our playoff bracket pools. Taking the cash to visit my buddy in NYC, hooray for gambling!
Better spend it on hookers and booze.
Devils eh. Fuck. Every year they're in the mix, but I can't remember the last time I actually went into a post-season thinking they would win the East again. Not since Stevens and Niedermayer left I don't think.
Hoping to see Volchenkov become the third Senator draft choice to lift the Cup. Hossa in 2010, Kelly in 2011, Volchie this year? Three of my favourite ex-Sens anyhow.
The Kings are an insane 12-2 in the post-season. That makes them look like a juggernaut, but it also makes me worried that they haven't faced a serious enough challenge yet. The Sens just weren't battle-hardened enough in 2007 when we coasted 12-3 through the first three rounds. The Devils are 12-6.
I think I'm going to pick New Jersey to win it all folks. But I picked LA back in the summer, so at least one iteration of me will be right.
Been really enjoying cheering for the Devils, when they started loading up on defensemen at the trade deadline is when I first perked up and thought something good might be happening, plus Kovalchuk's resurgence. Parise being healthy didn't hurt either. My only worry, and expectation really, was the Brodeur the Sens faced in recent years would be what the Devils got in the playoffs. But he seems on fire and I think scary for the teams he faces. The dude knows what needs to be done and does it. He seems completely focused now and on his game.
I haven't really been following LA that closely, I'd like to think though the reasons Philly got rid of Richards and Carter will come to fruition. Even though it was clear in these playoffs Philly could've used the defense of Richards and Carter.
I'm actually considering taking in the Jersey games, but I don't know if I can find some somewhat reasonably priced tickets .
