Getzlaf signs 8 years, $66 mil (8.25 a year cap hit). Too bad we blew all our money signing Erik "the Gimp" Karlsson at $6.5 mil a year.

So that's the new standard eh? Interesting numbers without the scheming.
We were always signing perry anyway.
Wow, home team discount.
Amazing how the last few years have made the Spezza deal looked damned reasonable, if only the motherfucker could stay healthy.
Spezza is only two years older than Getzlaf. He doesn't bring the all-around "Canadian" game that commentators and fanboys love but he's every bit as good a player IMO. Getzlaf isn't exactly an iron man either.
If this is the new normal, intrigued to see what ottawa can do with their cap space. Combined with the drop, Murray has em well positioned for next year.
Mike Komisarek anyone?
2 maybeline jokes on one team board in a single day?
Can we handle it?
Hard to say, but I'm not really a Getzlaf fan. His reputation far exceeds his actual performance on the ice on most nights. I hated him even when he played on the world junior team.
It wasn't that long ago that Ducks fans were sick of him and his "floating" ways and wanted to get rid of him. It's only going to get worse with that contract.
Not a Getzlaf fan either. I think he's Heatley-like and his body will slow down, which isn't good as he's already slow. Once his game ages like his hairline, that deal is an albatross.
Plus, this can't be a confirmed deal. I read on the Leaf board that they were signing Getzlaf.
If you asked right now, yes, you probably would. At the same time, TSN ranked Spezza higher in their top 50 before the start of the season.
Both guys are injury prone, but often play through their issues, leading people to take wild swings in their opinion of them.
I think a healthy Getzlaf is probably a better player than a healthy Spezza, but, the difference is pretty minor. Plus, I'd hesitate on any player for player swap, since Spezza has put the time in this market, put up with the trade rumour bullshit, and still likes being here. You can't count on other players of that calibre having the same attitude.

14- E. Staal
15- Briere in the playoffs
So Edmonton still sucks, Gagner is now their best player, Ryan Two Names has lost his mojo, and their defense still sucks.
Cant wait for them to draft Popeye Jones and think they have finally got the missing piece.
Since Edmonton drafted Sam Gagner 6th overall in 2006, they haven't had a single player picked outside of the first round play more than 65 games (Linus Omark).
In that span, they've had 9 (NINE!) first round picks. Five of those are legitimate NHL players today. Six if you include Paajarvi. They've had six second round picks, none of which are looking like NHL players.
In the "even a blind squirrel finds a nut" department, it looks like 4th line plug Teemu Hartikainen might actually stick around, once he gets off the IR.
That's a special kind of incompetence.
