So I was having a lunch with an ex-coworker a few days ago (no one you really know dog, don't worry) and I was talking about kids and generalities and what normal adults talk about during lunch with ex-coworkers.

The discussion of kids turned to tv and movie watching and I hapened to mention that my kid was watching the Lion King in loop these days and oh by the way, I think that movie is very racist.. (bla bla bla). Pretty bland statement I thought considering that all the good lions are lighter than all the bad lions. (and lets not get started on the Hyenas, voiced by black and hispanic actors).

And the response I got from this person that I've known for some 10 years: Well, its sort of normal to portray good people as white and bad people as black because historically thats how things are. Not to mention that God is white right.

What I didn't tell her was that my son's favourite character in the movie is Scar. Like so much so that I coax him into eating or brushing his teeth by saying things like "If you want to be strong like Scar, you have to eat those 3 pieces of meat" or "If you want your teeth to be as big as Scar's you have to brush your teeth before going to bed".

Its important to have role models.

Present company excluded you run with a classy bunch AD. For the record none of the adults I know talk about kids or the Lion King during lunch.

I also have to say I'm shocked you noticed given that your major preoccupation during most lunches is trying to keep eye contact with your servers' cleavage.

Interesting thing ... the idea of good guys are/wear white and bad guys are/wear black predates the modern notion of "race." In fact, the trope played an important role in helping build English perceptions of dark skinned people as they interacted with them during the early modern period. You see this in stuff like descriptions/depictions of the Devil, etc. which did not have racial connotations originally, but came to over time.

Voice work is a whole other thing. But, I mean, Star Wars taught us all how evil Britain is ... except for Obi-Wan, he was the shit.

I never liked him.

It goes back to the Jews time in ancient Palestine actually. They were located at the crossroads of Europe, Asia and Africa. Much of the worlds trade had to go through there and they would get paid to let it go through. The classic middleman, a very unpopular person, but very lucrative.

Alexander recognized these business skills and would send Jews to different parts of the empire to stimulate commerce. The skills were handed down generation to generation.

You gotta start showing your kids more recent movies, banana. In the Princess and the Frog, for example, the good guys are black.

So, it seems you have to choose between making your boy a racist or making your boy a fairy.

White(er) arabs. The dark arabs are seedy, have a thicker accent, and are generally evil.

Disney doesn't always get it wrong.

I thought the moral of most Disney movies was that people who don't wash often are evil.

It's the one about the princess and the frog.

Pretty much in line with newer disney movies, maybe a bit more boring than such instant classics as Tangled and Frozen.

Yeah that makes sense too.

Disney always has a bit of the nazi undertones, but it usually doesn't come out as clearly as in the Lion King.

Wait 'til people digest the racial statistics on capital cases...

In related news, only 1/3 of Americas are aware that the Dems control the Senate, and the GOP controls the House.
