2017-18 Prospect Stalking.

Post #1 by Rogers Pancreas » Sat Sep 23, 2017 4:56 pm

Tonight's going to be pretty busy for our CHL prospects, with Hamilton, Kitchener, Sault Ste. Marie, Sarnia, and Val-d'Or all playing tonight.

Hart remains with the Flyers (I believe), while Rubtsov was just recently returned to his junior club.

It's going to be a fun year this time around.

How do you guys rate the young D in terms of potential? Something like Provorov, Sanheim, Myers, Ghost, Hagg, Morin?

I would probably rank: Provorov, Sanheim, Ghost, Myers, Morin, Hagg. But it depends how you grade offensive and defensive potential, they all have unique skill sets and ceilings but if 4 or 5 of them reach their potential, we could have a crazy good defensive core. Or trade bait if we need more forwards eventually. Imagine 2 PP units, one with Provorov-Ghost as qbs and one with Sanheim-Myers.
Then there are still wildcards like Friedman, who could surprise after some pro seasoning.

I'm gonig to flip shit if Hextall trades D for forwards, unless he's targeting a franchise talent. Otherwise, you're taking a hit in value.

It really depends on how that D core starts to pan out. I mean, the offense has been struggling to score goals this preseason and they struggled last year. You gotta give a little to get a little. Our defense can be the best in the league but they aren't lifting the Cup if they can't score goals. If a good opportunity comes up to Hextall, I trust he'll properly assess it and make the right call.

I wouldn't expect anything soon though. All of those defenders are all reasonable cap hits, and if Morin and Hagg get extended next season it won't be a huge pay increase. So there is no reason to move them now unless a really good deal comes their way..

I think one of the kids could be traded at some point. But now is not the time. This group isn't ready to contend yet.

The Nolan Patrick arrival through dumb luck significantly decreased the pressure to "fix" the forwards, hopefully. If he, Konecny, Lindblom, and a couple other guys can make an impact in the next year or two, we will be more than fine. Giroux needs to transition to a slightly less demanding role (move to wing might help), but he should remain a PP force for a while yet.

My son needs it to work. Giroux is by far his favorite player even though I’m trying to get him on the Provorov train

I'm honestly most excited to see Couturier potentially with two legit line-mates in Giroux and Voracek. Konecny-Couturier-Voracek was our only good line early last year so they broke them up to attempt to get other's going, would love to see Coots get legit 1st line minutes with G and Voracek. Wonder if we get the final roster Saturday because of Hak saying he wanted the last game to be a dress rehearsal.

I know this is years off, but I'm just curious what others think. If the roster stays the same Couturier has to be the favorite after Giroux for the C, no? Only other young player that comes to mind is Provorov.

Ratcliffe - 3rd star of the game, 1 goal and 1 assist (5 shots on goal)
Frost - 3 minor penalties
Hart - 1st star of the game, .921 save percentage, 2/3 shooters stopped in the shootout
Kosorenkov - 2nd star of the game, 1 goal and 1 assists

I would hate fuck that idea into oblivion given the chance.

Provorov or bust.

And if anyone wants to know the rationale, I don't believe your leading scorer should be put in front of the media after every game to answer for something he may have zero control over, adding pressure to a situation when you could have easily avoided it. Provorov is very direct in all the interviews I've read, and the media won't be able to latch onto offensive production for soundbytes because he's a two-way defenseman who can always fall back on the fact others are counted on to produce; his job is to defend.

The developmental curve of Sam Morin, Darnell Nurse, and Nikita Zadorov has been really interesting to follow, IMO. Very similar size and skillsets between the three, but very different personalities, and three different paths. Nikita, the Diva, came on the quickest, but also fell out of favor with his organization, and is still struggling to find a place on a basement-dweller with a need for defensemen. Darnell, the best all-around athlete between the three, came on a bit quicker than Morin, and is looking like a pro with an Oilers squad that's found religion in McDavid. And, we've got Morin, the largest, most aggressive defender who's looking like a pro on a roster that has plenty of competition amongst the young defenders. I don't think any of these guys are looking like the next Weber, but like I said it has been interesting.

Ratcliffe had an assist tonight, along with 8 shots on goal - good enough for 2nd star of the game.

Rubtsov had an assist, which was apparently good enough for 3rd star of his game.

After a bit of perusing around the internet, reports confirm Carter Hart has a pretty serious case of mondo-dong. https://www.heraldnet.com/sports/everet ... ral-swing/

Morgan Frost had a goal, two assists, and was named second star of the night last night.

And for those paying extra close attention, with Hart away, Everett's netminders are killing them. Lunding's GAA is 3.36 and Dumba's a 4.44. So, I don't think we need to worry about Everett padding Hart's stats...

Quick update:

Morgan Frost was second star of the game Friday night with a goal and two assists, though he was murdered in the faceoff circle (9/24).

Matt Strome was first star of the game Saturday with an assist, which I think is always a positive sign.

Carter Hart was still out as of Saturday I believe. It looks like they're sitting one of the gruesome two-some for rookie Blake Lyda, a fourth-round draft pick.

Sam Morin had a pretty good night, finishing with 1 goal, 1 assist, a +1 rating and first star of the night honors.

Through 5 games, he has 1 goal, 3 assists, a +3 rating, 10 penalty minutes, and 7 shots on goal.

Sweet.

Rubtsov had a goal and an assist, and was named second star of the game.

Hart played last night as well, and saved 39/41 shots against. Everett lost, but not bad at all for a guy fresh off of mono.

It'll be interesting to see how the big club reacts to him. At 22-years old, he's coming on at a time that should have Hextall thinking "maybe we got something here."

Meanwhile, Carter Hart continues to do his thing:

Not a bad weekend for some of our prospects.

Strome had a goal and two assists, and was named second star of the night. That gives him 13 points through 16 games played.

Frost had a goal and two assists, and was also named second star of the night. He's up to 27 points through 20 games played (2nd in Sault St. Marie).

Ratcliffe had two goals, and was first star.

Hart stopped 28 shots against for his first shutout of the season, and that was good enough for third star. This season, he has a 0.933 save percentage.

Hart against stealing headlines, this time stopping 25/25 shots against for his second shutout of the season (in just 7 games played), and earning first star of the game honors.

For those interested, this is his GAA over the last five seasons:

3.49 (2 games played)
2.29 (rookie season)
2.14
1.99
1.79 (senior season, recovering from mono)

And his SV PCT over the same five seasons:

89.3 (2 games played)
91.5 (rookie season)
91.8
92.7
94.1 (senior season, recovering from mono)

And if you were at all worried about him in the post-season, his regular-season (career) save percentage is a 92.2 and his post-season (career) save percentage is a 92.2. There is literally no difference at this point in time.

Hart might quietly be the most exciting prospect we have, a franchise goalie can almost singlehandedly keep a team relevant for years.

I am very curious when they are thinking he's going to be ready internally ... the contract structure at the NHL level suggests they expect young goalies to show up soon.

Not sure I agree with it, but I'm also not sure it's worth arguing over.

Provorov, Sanheim, Lindblom, and to a lesser extent Konecny were all exciting to watch as they developed in juniors.

Hart just happens to be the best goaltending prospect of what I can honestly say is one of the most talented, and deepest group of goaltending prospects I can recall.

Matt Strome had two goals which was good enough for third star. He's now up to 20 in 20 after a pretty miserable start to the year.

Bunnaman finished with a goal and assist, and was also named third star. I still don't have a real good feel for the kid, but going purely off the feels I had more faith in Tye McGinn than I do in Connor.

Not a problem, Konecny. I wish there were more to make, but the kids have been pretty MEH this season.

The exclusion being Hart who was again named first star of the night last night, after making 48/50 saves in a 2-1 loss.

Will be interesting to see if he's great or just good in the AHL next year. He's clearly ready to move up

Ratcliffe had a goal and two assists last night (1st star). He's almost up to a PPG finally, and has an absurd 91 SOG through 21 games played.

I loved it, and then I loved it a little more when I thought how much Don Cherry hated it.

Quick Hart update: He was named the WHL goaltender of the week for two consecutive weeks.

Calgary, Alta. – The Western Hockey League announced today that Everett Silvertips goaltender Carter Hart has been named the WHL Goaltender of the Week and the league nominee for the Vaughn CHL Goaltender of the Week for the week ending November 19, 2017.

Hart, who is a second-round selection, 48th overall, of the Philadelphia Flyers in 2016, picked up a pair of wins as the Silvertips continued to make up ground in the standings, moving into a three-way tie for the Western Conference wild card spots.

Wednesday at home, Hart stopped all 25 shots he faced in a 2-0 shutout of the Prince Albert Raiders. Hart stopped 13 shots in the first, eight in the second and four in the third for his 21st career WHL shutout, which tied a Silvertips’ franchise record.

Hart stood tall Friday at home against the Seattle Thunderbirds, stopping 31 of 33 shots in a 3-2 victory for the Silvertips. With the game tied heading to the third period, Hart stopped 11 of the Thunderbirds’ 12 shots in the period, helping to preserve the victory.

Sunday, Hart took a 2-1 loss against the Regina Pats, but delivered another incredible performance, making 48 saves on 50 shots. Hart stopped 15 shots each in the first and second period, followed by 18 in the final 20 minutes. The 48 saves were a career-high figure for the 6-foot-2, 185-pound goaltender from Sherwood Park, Alta.

Calgary, Alta. – The Western Hockey League announced today that Everett Silvertips goaltender Carter Hart has been named the WHL Goaltender of the Week and the league nominee for the Vaughn CHL Goaltender of the Week for the week ending November 26, 2017.

Hart, a second-round selection, 48th overall, of the Philadelphia Flyers in 2016, picked up three wins this week as the Silvertips continued to gain ground in the U.S. Division race.

Wednesday against the Tri-City Americans, Hart stopped all 43 shots sent his way as he shutout the Americans by a 3-0 final. Hart stopped 12 shots in the first, 10 in the second and 21 in the third. The shutout was his third of the month and the 22nd of his WHL career, helping him set a new Silvertips’ franchise record for shutouts, passing Leland Irving. Hart was named the game’s first star and subsequently named the WHL’s first star of the night.

Friday against the Spokane Chiefs, Hart delivered a near-perfect effort, making 34 saves on 35 shots in a 4-1 victory. The 6-foot-2, 185-pound product of Sherwood Park, Alta. closed out his perfect week with a 22-save effort in a 5-2 win against the Vancouver Giants at home Saturday.

Since returning to the lineup in November, Hart has been one of the toughest goalies to beat. His 1.63 goals against average and .951 SV% both lead the league. He’s also tied for the league lead in shutouts with three.

Originally selected in the eighth round, 158th overall, by the Silvertips in the 2013 WHL Bantam Draft, Hart has compiled a 93-43-9-10 record in 161 WHL regular season games with a 2.09 goals against average and .923 SV%. Earlier this month, Hart represented Team WHL at the CIBC Canada Russia Series, earning a shutout victory in the first game of the series. Hart is the first player to earn back-to-back weekly honours this season in the WHL.
