I love the Players' Tribune. It's infinitely more insightful than any interview in the history of sports.

Really well put. Heyday Lindros was that guy for me.

Loved the Provorov shout-out, seems everybody who has ever played with Provorov understands how great he actually is/will be. If he stays healthy and with the Flyers he could go down as one of our best Dmen ever. Provorov also seems like a born leader, he's got that Timonen leadership it seems where players just respect him and follow his lead. Would love for him to get the C one day even if he's a Ruskie

Great pressure in the first no goals though so I expect to go down early into the second.

Assuming all goes as planned, he'll probably fall in Timonen/Desjardins territory.

And it irks me to this day Timonen doesn't have one second All-Star Team nomination to his credit whereas total shits like Green and Phaneuf earned no shortage of praise at their peak seasons.

By the end of next season, Ovechkin could/should have as many shots on goal as Gretzky. The difference in efficiency, though, is 17.6% (Gretzky) to 12.4% (Ovechkin), or 264.628 goals.

I'm not sure if he's going to be able to overcome it.

Elliot and the Flyers win 3 straight on the road after that. because, of course.

I hear you. I was talking about my yahoo league. Every move I have made has come back to bite me in the ass in both leagues.
injuries and some poor roster decisions have hurt me. Namestnikov being the main one. Did not see that coming at all.
I am still going to do drop adds. I mean Flyers hasn't even fixed the salaries and the correct cap number ffs. I have to use that roster link in the middle of the page still to view my roster correctly.
I know not many feel bad for me, and that is fine. Just venting here since we cant do it on the board for the league.

That Couturier GWG is the kind of goal I did not think he was able to score. Absolute laser.

Spicy pass by Giroux too.

That pass and goal was absolute insanity. Couldn't believe my eyes on the replay. Hey they won four in a row, and the U.S. isn't completely an irredeemable pile of shit (only mostly). Seems like a good night in america.

the Flyers board at HF are likely in tears. they probably envisioned a 14 game losing streak by now.
not a fan of Hakstol, but the fans of this team rooting for losses is pathetic.

I couldn't stand when Buffalo was cheering for losses so they could land McDavid. At least they were doing it for a once in a generation talent. Ours are doing it so we can fire a coach. That just feels so much dirtier.

I think it even surprised Couturier. In the post game interview he knew it was a roller which can be very wonky shots. I got the sense from how he was saying that he wanted to say "yeah I didn't think it would go in."

I don't get the appeal in cheering for losses when the ultimate goal is inevitable. Seems like a lot of wasted energy.

I mean Meltzer kinda nailed it. Hextall knew what he was signing up for with a coach with ZERO NHL experience. But he's a college coach used to working with 19-22 year olds, and we have a LOT of young talent in the pipeline, so he's got experience with kids that age. Hextall knew it was going to be a learning experience for both the kids as well as Hakstol. Shit isn't always going to go right; making mistakes is what an awesome way to learn how to do things right (yes you read that right). And 10 game losing streaks happen. They happen with experienced coaches as well.

Honestly, I never had the Flyers playoff bound this year. If they made it, great, but my hopes weren't high. I figured there was going to be a bunch of bumps in the road in dealing with rookie and sophomore seasons for a good portion of the team. A 10 game losing streak is a prime example of that.

I still have been saying the Flyers 5 on 5 play has been fine, the special teams was a fucking disaster and still is especially the PK. Hakstol's team has played good 5 on 5 and the young players are progressing that's why firing him always seemed idiotic to me.

The team still has a legit shot at the post season, it's incredibly early and they aren't that far back even though they lost 10 straight. Do I think they're favorites to get to the post season? Of course not, but it wouldn't surprise me if they did.

exactly. I get the frustration with the coach. he drives me nuts too, but I just dont fans sometimes. i didnt even root for losses in 06/07.

I mean folks on that very same board were criticsizing Oiler fans and Sabre fans for rooting for losses. Now they are doing the same because they hate the coach that much.

its a bizarre thing this season. they scored 128 5 on 5 goals last year(that may be a little off). 5 on 5 has been this teams strength this year and special teams has been weaker this year. well the PK has been terrible for going on 3 seasons in a row. But still this team has been good 5 on 5. I am going to say a large part of that has to do with moving Couturier to the top line and switching Giroux to wing. Definitely has given Giroux more room to do his thing.

that goal probably doesn't happen if Ziatsev doesn't slide over to the boards to try and pin Giroux on the wall. I think his man was Couturier and he just let Couturier slide into empty space in the middle of the ice without help. don't remember who was out there with him as his D partner but there seemed to be a lack of communication on that play on their end. thankfully it worked out for the Flyers. That would of drove me nuts if the Leafs scored a goal like that because of the same mistake.

I think the 5on5 has a huge amount to do with having actual defenders who can make breakout passes. Like having Hagg and Sanheim back there instead of the other fuckheads makes an incredible difference. Couturier-Filppula-Patrick down the middle is very solid defensively and we have an actual 4th line again. All the young kids can play, but when there is extra space on the ice whether it's being shorthanded or in OT they get taken to school sometimes which is fine as long as they learn.

I agree though with the Giroux statement GFH, getting him out of the middle has done wonders for his game offensively and defensively.

What a play by Patrick to save what would have been the second goal of the game, I don't know what the fuck was going on early with the puck handling but Elliot still made some huge saves.

Voracek will never score on a breakaway, pretty sure it's impossible at this point.

This team is just weird. Lose 10 in a row, win 5 in a row. Now they're 5-5-5 in the last 15. Just bizarre.

I don't think it's that strange.

Teams are a sum of the individual components, and the individual components of this team are average as a whole.

Our record supports that.

Now, if Hextall can address the albatrosses and holes on this roster, the prospects continue to develop, and the contributing veterans don't completely fall apart, we'll be looking at a significantly improved team, and one that we can start to talk about as one of the best in this league.

yeah it is an average club. they are hanging around a playoff spot because other teams in the 7-10 range have the same issues as the Flyers. How long that last remains to be seen. But at this point of the year for the most part you are what you are.
Tampa has distanced themselves by far as the class of the East. I don't think anyone is near them honestly

It will be interesting to see if they improve in the second half, or fade. For example, does Konecny start to really string it together with some consistent offense, or continue to muddle through with flashes? The same can be said for Sanheim and Hagg on the backend. Could easily see Sanheim, in particular, start to contribute a bit more.

On the whole, it is what should have been expected ... and they also happen to be stuck in a pretty deep division. Maybe they grow and stop blowing leads, and suddenly start converting some more points out of these games. As of now, they're on 90 point pace. If they need to find 10ish more points to have a shot at the playoffs, most likely. Doable. Especially if they close out the first half strong.
