So Kassian got himself a two game vacation for going apeshit on Matthew Tkachuk. "Good" is what I say to it. Tkachuk is a dick, but both the hits were inside the line (the first one barely) and the response should be to hit back, not to start throwing fists out of nowhere. I just wonder why Matt's brother Brady only got a fine for basically doing worse against Laughton. Both Brady Tkachuk and Kassian went after guys who riled them up with borderline hits earlier in the game, but Tkachuk's response seems to me much more premeditated rather than spur of the moment.

---------------

The caps have resigned Backstrom for 5 years and 46 million. I mean, he's a good player, but jeez, 9.2 million a year for ages 33-37 seasons seems like a baaaaad idea.

Negotiated that himself too I heard, which is pretty great. Means he keeps an extra 15% or something of it.

One of those Tkachuk hits was definitely an illegal hit to the head. It was almost like a Downie hit. Both of them should have been suspended.

Backstrom's deal seems a bit pricey but He is the type of player who generally ages well. Same % of cap on new deal as his last deal when he signed it. Definitely means Holtby in UFA is gone though.

They were both primary contact to not the head, which is the dumb way the league evaluates.

Brandon Manning has been suspended for 5 games in the AHL for using a racist slur. Welp, fuck that guy. Glad we are rid of him now from both a hockey and a personal level.

Last year, Sidney Crosby finished in 4th in Selke voting.

He started in the offensive zone 57% of the time. He was on the ice short-handed for 44:47 (over the span of 79 games). And, perhaps more importantly, he was on the ice for 83 goals against (5 of which came while on the penalty-kill), playing for a team that gave up 241.

This year, Giroux has started in the offensive zone 44% of the time. He's been on the ice short-handed for 52:29 (over the span of 50 games). More impressively, he's been on the ice for 38 goals against (5 of which came while on the penalty-kill), playing for a team that has given up 150.

Anyone want to take bets Giroux doesn't finish top-10?

Anyone want to take best Couturier wins it?

Looks like we have a genuine rivalry in the NHL again, now even including a goalie fight.

I've enjoyed the Tkachuk-Kassian back-and-forth nearly as much as the Reaves-Wilson fued going back a while now.

Komisarek-Neil, Crosby-Richards, Avery-Brodeur, and obviously the Lindros-Stevens fueds left a lasting impression as well.

Are there any more relatively recent ones I'm spacing?

EDIT: Add Hartnell-Phaneuf, McDavid-Manning, Lemieux-Draper, Neely-Samuelsson...

Jay Bouwmeester of the St. Louis Blues suffered a hard attack during a game tonight, collapsing on the bench. He is now awake and in a hospital, but the game was postponed. Shades of Rich Peverly who suffered a similar incident a couple of years ago and never played again. Best wishes and a full recovery, I hope.

Usually I wouldn't be happy about a Hurricanes win since the Flyers are in a playoff race with them. However, they did it with an emergency goalie, a 42-year-old zamboni driver, so more power to them. And it was against the Leafs so everything is three times as hilarious as it should be.

It's hard to imagine anyone one-upping the Senators, but the Sabres are definitely making a push for it.

The way things are going in the U.S., I doubt this season will continue, and I doubt the next one will start on time.

Fortunately, we have a much more competent country directly to the north that's also involved in the NHL. I feel much better about the NHL playing there than I do about MLB succeeding around the US.
