Love all the sanctimony over "tradition of the game", while at the same time approving sweater advertisements. I'm not surprised, though. Anything for a buck, eh?

Flyers and Sanheim settled at 2 years 4.65mil. Definitely more expensive than I was hoping for for such a short deal that takes him to UFA. I guess flyers might be betting on York taking his spot by then.

Coots re-signed for 8 years @7.75mil

Pretty good deal, lower than I expected but full 8 years helped bring number down Id say. Happy Couts is here to stay. Curious what Giroux gets for his next deal.

Yeah, this is a good one. Always thought that Coots and G would more or less swap cap hits in their new contracts.

Dude could’ve probably got $9m+ x 8 years on the open market.

If Giroux drops down to $4.3M, that's a coup for Fletcher.

Yeah Giroux wont go that low, but he'll probably drop to around $6mil.

Could also see him doing the Captain thing of just signing 1 year deals each year for whatever cap space we have available. But he'll probably take a 3 year deal or something before we get to that point.

Cap situation next year is going to be pretty tight with Farabee needing a new deal, but will be JVR's last year so should be more moveable.

Jesus. Fuck.

Couturier's almost 30.

And he's only about 250 games off of Giroux, who is about 5 years older. Which means we could realistically see Giroux pass Bobby Clarke in games played as a Philadelphia Flyer. And within a handful of seasons, Couturier could pass him.

Is there a realistic path to #14 getting retired if couturier plays out all or most of this contract?

That is a pretty low bar unless he leads the team to the Cup or at least the Cup finals. It's been Giroux's team for all of Couturier's career thus far. He'd have to do something really special to break out of Giroux's shadow and make his number special enough to hang up in the rafters.

Couple more selkes and a cup might do it

If he wins another selke, and a Conn Smythe during Giroux's tenure (along with a Cup), I could see both of their numbers being retired. But without that cup, there is no conversation.

Yes and no. Giroux is the public face of the franchise, but Couturier has pretty clearly been the better overall player the last 2-3 years.

Bigger problem for both is the lack of team success.

Being a better player for 2-3 years does not seem to be criteria for retiring a number.

If I look at the Devils, I think that they set the wrong tone by retiring Daneyko's number for being there a long time. His play did not deserve it.

Brodeur deserved to be honoured. Stevens was the captain of three Cup teams, so I can see the argument.

But then Niedermayer was given the honour despite perhaps not being with the team long enough, though he was deserving on the talent level. And Elias was sort of a situation where he was between Daneyko and Niedermayer... he was talented and he was there a long time, and he won a couple of Cups with the team.

If it were up to me, I would save retiring a player's number for a slam dunk situation like Brodeur, who did something with the team that was exceptional (i.e. all time wins leader) league wide and not just the best player on the team for the generation. And I would have told the league to fuck off with the retiring Gretzky's number league wide bullshit.

I mean, when you win multiple cups ... You're going to retire multiple numbers. But my point was more that the notion Couturier has existed entirely in Giroux's shadow is overstated. Part of that is that Giroux has been a very high bar, but even then ... Couturier has been one of the better players in the league the last few years, and if the Flyers win the Cup, he's going to be the no 1 center, not Giroux.

I appreciate that the Flyers are very judicious about hanging numbers.

Yep, there are a few absurd ones. Ray Bourque in Colorado is utterly ridiculous.

Not winning a cup in over forty years will certainly help in that regard.

True, but the Coyotes have as many retired as the Flyers.

Farabee at a $5M AAV might be Couturier-esque.

Yeah should be a great deal based on last year. He was only young player who actually improved last year.

The only way you could possibly complain is that the length might put us in the same pickle we're in with Couturier, where signing the next contract is buying years that will definitely be on the downslope, but at this AAV, I'm good with that tradeoff.

Also kind of interesting that they went for a higher AAV now instead of trying to bridge him. I’ve just been assuming next offseason would be kind of fraught as far as cap space goes, but maybe they figure that Giroux will take a discount. Unless he really falls off this year, you figure he’s probably still a $7M+ player in the short-term if he went to the open market.

Edit: Also have to worry about future Norris winner Risto I suppose. That trade really is the turd in the punch bowl, rest of the offseason really has been pretty solid.

Yeah Giroux and Risto are main ufa/rfa for next year now. We still have 15 mil in space next year but need backup and couple lower roster spots too. If risto is good and worth keeping, can always buy out or trade JVR at that point as an expiring contract.

I have to assume Fletcher has factored in whatever conversations occurred with the Giroux camp this summer.

Yeah forgot about that one, have to assume JVR would be movable unless he falls off a cliff or something.

And yeah @jester, hopefully that’s the case. Would imagine that how this season will be a big one for seeing if he stays, have to imagine he wants to play for a contender at some point…
