Horavt just got paid, "earning" a 6 year, 5.5 million dollar per year extension. And the Canucks follow suit with Edmonton Oilers, overpaying anyone and everyone coming up through the system with even a hint of potential.

well Horvats production has been on the uptick every season. He will be a kid they build around once the Sedins are gone.

I admittedly don't watch him/them play (I barely watch the Flyers as is), but I think offensive number sometimes get inflated when all the scoring is done on a poorly performing team. Jon Sim, Kyle Calder, Mike York and Tyler Arnason are good historical data points. Sure, they produced, but it came at the expense of their team's overall performance.

Horvat is giving you good offensive production, but it's not really moving the needle if you're Vancouver; why not pursue a bridge contract?

I assume it's also about keeping fan interest as high as possible. It's clear the twins are gone soon and they need a new face even in the interim for the franchise. Worrying about him signing again in 2-3 years (whatever the bridge would've been) might've been a shit-show. Just thinking out loud...

Think you nailed it. That is one shit way to run a franchise, though, and that is not an opinion.

This is not confined to hockey, either. Put mediocre players on shit teams and they will put up some numbers just because they will get opportunities that they won't get on a good team. It isn't really that it's at the expense of the team's overall performance, it's more that there is a wall that they cannot surpass because they cannot convert opportunity as efficiently as a legit "good" player.

Essentially, someone has to accumulate some stats, but you don't want to be paying for that production like its real or going to improve.

Apparently McDavid was clocked in at ~40 km/h in full stride for that goal.

That dude Ovechkin has his second hat-trick in two games. But even if he nets a third hat-trick in the next 47 games, he'll need to score at a 72 goal pace to finish with 50-in-50. I say this because this might be the best start to the season I can remember, by one of the best goal-scorers I have ever seen play the game.

Carter got cut by a skate and it seems bad. Surgery involved. The Kings just signed Brooks Laich as a replacement.

Penguins got hammered by the Bolts for 7-1. Also Crosby got himself a 10 minute misconduct for abuse of an official because he yammered at the refs after getting a penalty.

Also, the Bruins lost in OT to Buffalo, even though they led 4-1 at one point in the game.

Gotta give props to Vegas. First team to win 6 of their first 7 games in their inaugural season. And them being successful is a good thing for the league in general.

I can't believe Pitt signed Niemi as backup, he's done.

Vegas lost Subban last night. Down to their 3rd string goalie already.

It's impressive, but no expansion team had the privileges the Knights did in the history of the league. So, some context is necessary when this gets brought up in the future.

Seems like getting rid of Niemi wasn't the whole solution to Pittsburgh's goaltending woes. They just got beaten by the Jets 7-1. Murray played 18 minutes and gave up 4 goals on 9 shots. His replacement didn't fare much better when he gave up a goal 10 seconds into his NHL career with Blake Wheeler completing a hat trick. Pittsburgh now rocking a -14 goal differential after 13 games. Ouch.

I feel for Avs fans. A roster with Duchene, MacKinnon, O'Reilly, and Landeskog on it is a team that can compete with most anyone. But after several years of mismanagement, they are in no man's land. And I don't think their management has a good plan to get out of it.

Yeah, Duchene being in the east is not something I look forward to. Thankfully it's not a straight upgrade as Turris moves to Nashville in the whole ordeal and immediately signed a six year extension with the Predators. The Avs got a decent return for Duchene in total, with a 1st, 2nd, a 3rd, Shane Bowers, Samuel Girard, Vladislav Kamenev and Andrew Hammond. However, considering none of them are anywhere close as good as Duchene and this is the result of years of mismanagement by the Avs this is still a big L for them in my book.

If the Sens fail to resign Duchene this deal will turn out to be terrible for them. Their owner is very cheap in comparison to other owners around the league. The Av's are doomed, however.

I wouldn't say he's cheap. He's paying almost 15 million for Phaneuf and Ryan. If/when he finds a way out from at least one of those contracts, it shouldn't be hard to justify the 8 million Duchene's looking for. Which is funny to say considering the guy's broke 60 points twice in his 8 year career.

Duchene has one more year after this one at 6 mil. Lots of time to find some cap space

Well the Hawks scored four goals in the 1st and hat a 4-1 lead at one point. They then allowed four goals in the 2nd. In the end they lost 7-5. Yikes. Would be funnier if it wasn't against the fucking Devils.

Should have been at least two for slashing, if not a match penalty for spearing. Crosby didn't even touch the puck as far as I could tell

Jersey just picked up Vatanen for Henrique and Blandisi (?)

So, if I'm swapping bodies based on position, in are Hall and Vatanen and out are Henrique and Larsson. Not a bad pair of moves from an outsider's perspective.

And in other unfortunate news, McDavid blocks a shot almost the worst way possible - with Laperriere and Thoresen holding the top two spots. The result is as expected.

Re: Flyers History

Claude Giroux is now 10th all-time in games played, 4th all-time in assists (!), and 9th all-time in points. His competition, as of this moment, are Gary Dornhoefer (725 games played), Bill Barber (463 assists), and Mark Recchi (627 points). And assuming Giroux is able to avoid any catastrophic injury/setback, they are all very much within play.

Other notable achievement: Sean Couturier has now played more games as a Flyers than Mike Richards. And by the end of the season, he will have passed Jeff Carter as well in games played as a Flyer.

There's virtually no separation. In the Atlantic, there are over 30 points separating the first and last seed. In the Pacific, you have the same situation. In our division, there's fucking TEN points, which makes that 10 game skid excruciatingly painful.

Seattle will be getting their own franchise in 2020, and the expansion rules that Vegas enjoyed will also be in full effect.

Forwards (7 or 4)
Giroux, Couturier, Patrick, Voracek, Simmonds, Konecny, Lindblom, Laughton, Frost* (possibly exempt), Rubtsov* (possibly exempt)

Defensemen (3 or 4)
Provorov, Ghost, Hagg, Morin, Myers, Sanheim

Goaltenders (1)
Hart* (possibly exempt), Stolarsz, Lyon

*ELC Slide Rule
If a player who is signed to an entry-level contract and is 18 or 19 years of age (as of September 15 of the signing year), does not play in a minimum of 10 NHL games (including both regular season and playoffs; AHL games do not count), their contract is considered to ‘slide’, or extend, by one year. For example, if a player signed an ELC for three seasons from 2015-16 to 2017-2018, and their contract slides, their contract is now effective from 2016-17 to 2018-19. An exception to this rule is that if the player is 19 on September 15 of the first year of their contract, and turns 20 between September 16 and December 31, their contract does not slide.

Players who sign at 18 years old are eligible to have their contracted extended for 2 seasons. This extension does not apply if the player turns 20 between September 16 and December 31 in his signing year. Signing bonuses do not slide, and are paid to the player regardless of a slide, this causes the annual average of the players contract to change, and therefore the cap hit decreases for this player.

So, yea... I just got a whole lot less comfortable re-signing Simmonds. As if Lucic, Backes, Hartnell, Brown, Richards, and Clarkson weren't reason enough.

EDIT: FUCK. I just realized Simmonds has a NTC, limiting the number of teams he's willing to accept a trade to.

Couldn't we just resign Simmonds and not give him an NMC/NTC so that we can leave him unprotected? Alternatively, not sure if we have the cap flexibility for this, but maybe we could give him a 2-3 year deal at a high AAV rather than trying to stretch him out.

It's a weird situation, because objectively, with the picks they've spent on wingers the last 2-3 years, it probably doesn't make sense to resign him, but at the same time, he has such a good connection with the city and feel like he's probably a good voice in the room as well.

its not an easy call. how likely is it that he takes another hometown discount. he is on one of the best contracts in the league. will that happen again? I don't know.
I think he gets traded this summer personally. the Flyers do have some young kids who can step in next season. Obviously there will be some things that do not appear on the score sheet that will be missed. I am glad I am not the one making the decision

Hextall has the option to do lots of things... except what you're proposing here. There is literally no fucking reality in which an NHL agent lets his client, a 29-year old unrestricted free agent, sign anything less than the maximum offer he can conceive. And with unrestricted status, that leaves that agent with plenty of opportunities to find a taker.

It's a weird situation, because objectively, with the picks they've spent on wingers the last 2-3 years, it probably doesn't make sense to resign him, but at the same time, he has such a good connection with the city and feel like he's probably a good voice in the room as well.

I agree with you wholeheartedly. He's had five seasons of ~30 goals, which puts him in the company of Gagne and Carter as one of the elite goal-scorers of our time, and he represents the Flyers organization well on and off the ice. If Hextall didn't have to contend with the salary cap, I'd argue that he should do anything and everything he can to retain Simmonds. But, the salary cap exists, and the expansion draft is on the horizon. Hextall will need to decide 1) how is he going to allocate his cap space and 2) who he feels comfortable leaving exposed at the risk of recouping nothing at all.

Unfortunately, Simmonds has never had more value than he does today due to his goal-scoring acumen, and current cap-hit. He's also due for a significant raise for a significant number of years right about the same time history has proven players of his ilk decline. Just in recent history, we can cite Lucic, Backes, Hartnell, Richards, and Brown as reasons not to sign a 29-year old power-forward to a long-term contract. Fuck, Hartnell didn't make it one year before Hextall shipped him out with his 6-year extension, so there's precedence within this organization, under this general manager.

I admit that I'm leaning heavily in one direction, but only because I don't want to miss out on the opportunity to gouge another GM for another 1st-round pick or two - especially at the expense of one of our young defensemen, or a forward that could quite conceivably outscore Simmonds at ES within a year or two at a fraction of the cost (i.e. Laughton.)

On a per minute basis, I think Laughton is already outscoring him at 5 on 5

@ RP, ultimately the player makes the call. I mean, what if the Flyers offered him 2 years at 16 million? That's a crap-ton of money and he'd still be 31-32 at the end of the deal.

I'd be surprised if he took it, but I don't think there's much harm in exploring whether he'd be open to it or not.

http://www.thehockeynews.com/news/artic ... suspension

“We heard Burrows’ argument that the knees he delivered to Hall’s head resulted from his attempt to free his arm from a compromising position,” Parros said in the league’s video explaining the suspension. “We do not agree with his interpretation (Translation: “Seriously? Are you kidding me?”), nor would we excuse repeated knees to the head under those circumstances.” (Translation: “We here at DOPS did not just fall off a turnip truck.”)

For those feeling a little nostalgic, Hartnell got in a little fight with Phaneuf tonight. Couldn't wait until Valentine's day... again.
