Dont know if anyone watches the World Baseball Classic, but the US just beat Canada to move on.

JL will be happy as Adam Jones was the player of the game.

USA eliminated by Puerto Rico.

Was does Puerto Rico even get their own team? They aren't a country.

Halladay registered 85-88 again. He left early, but they're saying he threw up and has a stomach bug. Doesn't totally shake the concern at this point though

My brother is an illustrator. He belongs to a coworking group called Indy Hall. He has a baseball show, called "Fast, For a Catcher," opening April 5th at their space at 22 N 3rd street, starting at 5:00. It's a First Friday event, so there's free beer. It'll be open for a month or so, so if you guys just want something to do, check it out. Below is the poster for the show, and some sample drawings. The ones that look like the 3rd one down are all one line.

From Zolecki:

Amaro, Dubee Opine on Halladay’s Saturday
Roy Halladay’s start yesterday in a Minor League game at Carpenter Complex drew plenty of attention.

He has had a rough month, struggling in starts because of dead arm, lethargy and illness, respectively. Then 11 of the 18 batters he faced yesterday reached base. He got just three swings and misses, with Triple-A hitters from the Toronto Blue Jays hitting numerous balls hard. His fastball consistently hit 87-89 mph on the radar gun, hitting 90 mph once in the first inning. He officially allowed three runs, although he had the bases loaded with two outs when the first inning got cut short after he reached his pitch limit.

Halladay insisted he felt fine and will be ready to go April 3 in Atlanta.

“He was OK,” Ruben Amaro Jr. said.

“After what he’s gone through, he was fine,” Rich Dubee said. “I’m not looking for results right now. The good part was he threw 80 pitches, he felt strong and felt like he could have thrown more. The arm slot was fine. He’s a ways from repeating it. Do you see anybody at their level yet? He’s not where he’s going to be yet. But I thought the velocity for not having pitched was good. He sat 88 to 90 consistently and finished the game at 89 almost 80 pitches into it. So arm-strength wise, that was good and he feels like there is more there. I think the more we get it right, the more it will come out.”

Sugar coating him getting shelled... It may be just the fact that he was working on his pitches, but not a good sign this late in spring training.

Gelb's article in the Inquirer today isn't as shiny. It's got quotes from Halladay saying how he's considered having to adapt. He said he thinks he'll be able to add a couple clicks to his fastball, but that still only puts him at 92. He talked about adapting how he approaches hitters, too.

Halladay has always had a lot more than velocity, so I expect that he can be effective... but the velocity matters.

This is just depressing to read:

http://www.philly.com/philly/sports/phillies/20130328_Phillies_continue_to_rely_more_on_scouting_than_sabermetrics.html

I like Amaro (generally). I think he has a coherent idea of what he's trying to do, and I think he's had a bit of bad luck in not getting a WS ring as the GM of the team itself. That being said, this stuff is disturbing. It's one thing to not base your decisions entirely on advanced metrics, but some of the quotes in that piece are just mind numbingly stupid. I get that they're trying to defend moves, and also appreciate that in many cases the last two offseasons they've had limited options to really improve the roster short of getting bled dry on contracts. That being said, not appreciating how silly the RBI stat is... ugh.

Is that the article from the Inquirer today? They had a whole ten page preview, and I was kind of excited to read some of it...but I open to D2 and there's some garbage quote like "The Eyes Know" in big fuckin print next to a profile of Amaro. Became instantly disinterested

I don't particularly care for Amaro. I do agree that he's got a plan, but otherwise he's always adding on money or years he simply doesn't need to. It's also been well known for years that the front office doesn't look at any sabremetrics. He can never make the small move, either, which Gillick was king at making.

As long as you keep spending, the money is irrelevant to me. The Howard contract is terrible, but as long as they don't use that to justify not making other good moves... no big deal. I'm not sure I would have wanted to spend for the guys that were out there this winter, and coming next year (right?--or the year after) the Phils are going to be rolling in TV money.

I also accept the reticence about sabremetrics, but if you're going to dismiss the value of advanced metrics you cannot turn around and use an idiotic stat-based argument to support a move you make. You think Young is going to be a good ballplayer for you? Say that's what your scouts think, don't tell me he had a lot of RBIs last year, so, clearly, he's an improvement for the Phils.

I think that's a year or two away. Next year is when the luxury tax limit goes up, which should free up some budget space for them since that seemed to be their stopping point.

Baseball with a salary cap would lead to at least 10 years of constant hilariously poor decisions by about 3/4ths of GMs. Comedy fuckin' gold.

Yes and no, they have the most developed analytics and Ruben Amaro was the best baseball player of the current bunch. The huge effect on baseball would be a strict cap floor that would force some of these guys to start spending and competing. Too easy to field a shit team and pocket money right now.

OK. I'm not expecting him to be super sharp, but getting whifs is a good sign. It's going to be a work in progress with him for a bit, I think.

And now is when you remember this team has stiffs like Michael Young, Laynce Nix, John Mayberry, and Delmon Young expected to contribute

And then stiffs like Ryan Howard who is still owed 100 million :lebruntard:

I'm not sure it's fair to label Young a stiff. Downside of his career? Sure. But he's a good enough hitter that he can give you something.
