Season Salvaged: Flyers Acquire Steve Downie for Max Talbot

Post #1 by Dr. Krieger » Thu Oct 31, 2013 2:05 pm

At special request from DeadPhish, this move is so monumental that it deserves its own thread. The Flyers have traded Max Talbot to the Colorado Avalanche in exchange for Steve Downie.

Welcome back!

I hope he goes back to wearing 27. He is the only Flyer worthy of wearing the Great One's number.

good deal. Downie should provide an upgrade to the top 6.
Max was a good player and a good soldier for the team. Not his fault he was thrust into a role he never should of been in. Hopefully it doesnt hurt the PK.
Only question i have is there too much of what Downie brings on the team now? does that mean Simmonds gets dealt?
still a win trade for the Flyers. Hopefully they can bring him back at a good rate after this season. Downie is a UFA.
man how time flies. doesnt seem he should be that old.

Yea hopefully this boosts Hartnell's and Simmonds' play. I'm ecstatic over this trade though. My favorite ex-Flyer has returned.

My 2 favorite Flyers of all times are back on the team. First Hextall, now Downie. Now if only they could get Gagne and Forsberg back.

Coburn is next?

I could see Hartnell going home to western Canada. At least Simmonds is still young.

Love Talbot's hustle, but pretty happy to see Downie back. Seems like a trade greatly in our favor though? did we give up any picks or anything?

Downie is UFA at seasons end so that's what swayed it I think.

This makes room for Laughton next year, or even after his Jr's season is over.

Wow. I have no fucking clue why Colorado would do this, but this is an amazing trade from the Flyers perspective in terms of value. However, I don't think Downie is actually a piece that we need. At least I hope this means that Hall returns to the Line-up as a penalty killer, and prolapse gets to pick splinters on the pine.

Only thing I can think of is that Roy either hates Downie or he has a serious hardon for Talbot.

Roy is good buddies with Talbot's junior coach, so I'm really hoping they wanted Talbot for some unknown reason. Odd deal from the Avs' standpoint though.

Oh, and I'm also surprised that there was a trade between the Flyers and the Avs and the name "McGinn" was not involved.

Ooh, good point. I'm very thankful - Colorado ain't sending their McGinn our way, and I'm very happy ours didn't go to Denver. The littlest McGinn belongs to someone (not sure who drafted him) - the kid is tearing up the OHL right now.

Brock McGinn (what a name) is a Hurricanes prospect, so expect them to trade for both of his older brothers so they can have two lines consisting entirely of brothers.

Weren't there rumblings in the preseason that Meszaros could be going to Colorado? Looks like the rumour mill had the team right but the names wrong.

Yeah, I think you're right. I wouldn't be surprise to see us make a deal with Edmonton soon enough, it keeps coming up. As we've seen with the Flyers, when there's smoke there's usually fire.

Can you imagine how many PP's the Penguins are now going to get when we play them.

Just put Downie and Rinaldo out there on the same line. The NHL would go nuts.

Great deal though. We get rid of Talbot's unnecessarily long contract and Downine is a UFA after his year.

I'd like to see Rinaldo buried in the minors until the end of time. It's the only way to be sure he doesn't come back to bite us.

I just assumed all general managers understood playing AHL players in the NHL doesn't help your team win games.

Can they hit the flyers with an "impending roughing" penalty the second Berube puts both Downie and Rinaldo on the ice?

Can we agree to never talk about Jones? Everything about his tenure here was aggravating.
