Sanheim is back up! Seems like a dman might be banged up.

Plus, he is clearly conscious of the scoring depth problem. That's why he split Giroux and Voracek. The Giroux to wing move has been great, but one drawback is that it thinned out the talent at center. Happily, Patrick is starting to rise to the challenge, which is really encouraging for next year.

One thing I've really liked with Patrick's game so far is his takeaways. He seems to strip people of the puck out of nowhere. Even if it takes awhile to develop a full 2 way game, the takeaway ability can bridge the gap.

This kind of play is so impressive for a young rookie in the NHL:

That's not a huge endorsement of Hakstol, but it's hard to indict him at the sane time.

True.

Also true, but let's not pretend Giroux's move to wing totally driven by Hakstol. It was triggered by Couturier telling his head coach 'put me in a more offensive role' (link), which in turn drove some rearrangements to the top-six.

If Couturier does not have that discussion with his head coach, I can't say with absolute certainty where we'd be right now. But, if that same coach didn't have enough foresight to shift Giroux to wing while Giroux was struggling to recover from his sports hernia surgery, what would make anyone think Hakstol would do anything different a year later with essentially the same roster? It's not as if Nolan Patrick came in, and instantly earned Hakstol's full confidence.

And while I'm on a tangent, I believe Ghost has said in the media that he's just doing what comes natural to him this season. It's not exactly what I'm looking for, but worth pointing out all the same: "I step up and make confident plays. Yeah, I have a little sizzle in my game or whatnot, but I think them giving me that leeway to be myself has really changed this year and helped me." (link)

I'm really curious what the FA plan looks like for this summer. Where and how does Frost factor in? Do they see him as a center? If so, we could be filthy down the middle in a couple years if everyone meets potential. If not, do they try to find a veteran two wayish guy that can help stabilize the bottom 6, or focus on a scoring wing.

I don't know how anyone can justify putting Frost at any other position other than center. Laughton I can understand. Rubtsov I can understand. But Frost has done everything at an extremely high level, faceoffs not withstanding. And the latter isn't a great predictor of future success at the NHL anyways.

I've been impressed with his passing. I was expecting a kid in the mold of Jeff Carter, but he's making plays like Richards/Giroux might with regularity.

I generally think coaches get too much credit for success, and too much blame for failure. But let's not minimize the difficulty of demoting a team captain with considerable success and standing in the NHL to a less premium position. That took some balls. Also, let's give credit to Giroux for embracing the role change.

I don't know how anyone can justify putting Frost at any other position other than center. Laughton I can understand. Rubtsov I can understand. He's 5'10" and 173lbs. We can get cute about how size doesn't matter, but given the defensive responsibilities of the position ... it will be something to think about. Particularly on a roster with Couturier and Patrick.

This is another game with AMac where I just don’t get what the coaching staff is watching. Forget the actual numbers, just constant turnovers and lost puck battles.

I never had a chance to watch the guy, but if I did... I probably would have gravitated towards Tocchet or Propp instead.

This "penalty-kill", without a doubt, is the worst I have ever seen in my fifteen to twenty years as a Flyers fan.

Claude finally did it. It took him 243 more games, but he has officially tied Eric Lindros in points scored as a Flyer. Next up is Rick MacLeish at 697 (38 more points), which probably won't happen this season, and then the big ones - Brian Propp (849) and Bill Barber (883).

It's going to be close, but if he can string together six more seasons at 0.50 PPG, and the NHL doesn't completely fuck him with another lockout shortened season along the way, he'll retire the second leading scorer all-time among Flyers. He will have also played more games than anyone in franchise history at that point, but that's not nearly as interesting.

Elliott was 5-6 weeks on feb 13, so I imagine he's getting close. I think I heard somewhere he's already skating

Neuvirth was 4-6 weeks from feb 20, so also probably not too far out. He started skating again yesterday

Aren't we the career worst shootout team since inception? Too bad Mrazek sucked in the game because he's actually strong in the shootout.

Also how is Giroux not in the first 3 shooters?

Giroux's also inching closer to becoming the second leading scorer (assists only) in franchise history. He's four away from Barber, who sits at third, I believe, and twenty-one away from Propp. He'll probably never touch Clarke's records, but there's no shame in accomplishing what he has in the age he has.

Yeah, I can't remember if I've brought this up before, but I guess Giroux is probably destined for the "Hall of Very, Very Good" but not the "Hall of Fame" barring a few more seasons like this one. Been great to see him have this type of year though, especially knowing how competitive he is.

Also, I had kind of lost track of this in the shuffle, but Konecny is up to 15th in the league in 5v5 goals. Obviously he benefits from spending 30-40 games with Giroux/Couturier this season, but really looks like Hextall nailed that pick considering he just turned 21 too. And as much as Hakstol annoys sometimes (giving Read Konency's spot in the 3rd period last night...why?), he deserves credit too.

Since December 28th Konecny has 34 points in 38 games. 33 being even strength points.

On Read, he should have been up with the team all year over Weise/Leier/Lehtera realistically. He's always been a solid defensive winger. Looks weird to give him so much trust again after exiling him all season.

It still bothers me that Giroux was always looked at like a spare forward on Canadian Olympic teams and that the NHL didn't go this year. His legacy should have more accolades than it does.

Sanheim needs to have better discipline in the 3rd period. Feel like that wasn't the first time he took a bad penalty while defending a lead in the 3rd. He also needs to be on PP2.

Unless we trade Giroux, he will be the longest tenured captain I have seen. That deserves some credit.
