Ghost has a decent chance at being top-5 in points among D by the end of the year, not bad.

I still have trouble wrapping my head around Giroux being #2 in games played early next season. The lack of team success over the past decade really lowers him a rung on the "Flyers legend" idea in my head (which is entirely unfair to him). Or maybe it's just a recency thing.

I'm not sure how far you can drop him, though. Maybe beneath Lindros, who was truly a once-in-a-lifetime player. But you're definitely not dropping him beneath Barber, LeClair, Propp, Gagne, Poulin or Richards. He has the kind of longevity this franchise doesn't typically get out of their players. And, he's been consistently productive in his role as acting captain, which I think he's done well in.

My Top-5 Forwards:
1. Bobby Clarke
2. Eric Lindros
3. Claude Giroux
4. Bill Barber
5. Mike Richards/Dave Poulin/Simon Gagne/Brian Propp/John LeClair

I feel like you have to put Barber ahead of him. Barber is HHOF and won 2 Cups with the franchise.

Really, really hope we get another couple seasons of actual contention with G though. The fact that a top-5 or so player in franchise history has played on mediocre-to-bad teams for his entire prime is depressing.

If Giroux weren't already nipping at Barber's heels on the Flyers' all-time list, I'd agree with you. But short of the two Stanley Cups and goal-scoring ability, I think Giroux's resume is more impressive. And I wouldn't rule out the Hall of Fame quite yet, as Giroux's career isn't over yet, and he's still showing signs of a pulse.

Bill Barber

-Finished top ten in assists, league-wide, once (9th in '76)

Claude Giroux
-Captain of the Philadelphia Flyers from 2013 to present

Yeah, definitely fair points there. If he doesn't win a Cup, Giroux's HHOF case will be pretty interesting, I would guess he comes up a bit short unless he has a couple more 100 point seasons or his longevity gets to be unassailable.

It also doesn't help that for some godforsaken the hockey minds have always underappreciated Giroux. Like putting Kunitz on the Olympic team but not Giroux.

It's a damn shame Giroux wasn't on more Canadian national teams. Bullshit really, he's always been a 3 zone, all situation player.

Hart Trophy Voting Finishes
Giroux - 3, 4, 4, 16

Bergeron - 5, 15, 17, 17, 18
Getzlaf - 2, 6, 7, 15, 20, 20
Kopitar - 3, 8, 8, 17
Stamkos - 2, 6, 8, 11, 11, 14
Toews - 4, 6, 9, 10

What's more, he was screwed out of competing for Team Canada at the Olympics not once but twice - once by Yzerman and the second by Bettman.

I wasn’t seriously arguing for dropping him. More like, the complete mediocrity we’ve experienced feels like a time warp and it doesn’t actually feel like we’re more than five years into giroux’s career, because I just haven’t had any reason to pay attention since about 2012

Fuck. If Giroux can play for eight more years (to the age of 40) and average 40 assists a season, he'll nearly overtake Clarke for most assists as a Philadelphia Flyer. And at 60 points per season, he may even take a run at Clarke's point totals as well.

Updated for Timonen, Coburn, the Watson's, Galley and Crossman sliding down the list of all-time Flyers' greats.

It's sad to say, but also somewhat exciting to know that Ghost and Provorov are enjoying the success they have, and knowing they're going to be around for at least another year or two; knowing that Carter Hart on his path towards overtaking greats like Lindbergh, Hextall and (potentially) Parent is on another level of awesome as well.

I know he doesn't fit the mold that NHL coaches are all conditioned to look for, but he's young, he has a great attitude, and he's really fucking talented.

His usage these last couple of years (especially this one) has been really disappointing, IMO. God knows the NHL isn't exactly flush with talented (or capable) defensemen - let alone exciting defensemen.

And in case people here live under a rock, Giroux broke Bobby Clarke's franchise record for power play assists.
