WHAT IF: Shanahan Arbitration

Post #1 by Paper Jam Dipper » Sun Nov 17, 2013 7:49 pm

In 1991, the St. Louis Blues decided to once again make a splash in restricted free agency. They signed Brendan Shanahan away from the New Jersey Devils. The Blues and Devils argued on arbitration. The Devils wanted Scott Stevens, who the Blues originally stole from the Capitals as an RFA. The Blues wanted to instead give up Rod Brind'Amour, Curtis Joseph and two first round draft picks later down the road (they still owed four first round picks to the Caps for Stevens). The arbitrator decided that Scott Stevens was a fair exchange.

Let's say the arbitrator goes ahead with the Blues offer. This is right before Brind'Amour (who the Blues dealt to Philadelphia soon after anyway) broke out into a top six center and Curtis Joseph cemented himself as a starting NHL goaltender. The Blues next first round draft picks came in 1996 and 1997, a long time after this trade.

Who benefits? How do things change? Martin Brodeur was already drafted in 1990. Who wins a goalie battle between the two? How does Brind'Amour fare in New Jersey? Do the Devils still win the Cup in 1995? Do the Blues still trade for Pronger with Scott Stevens in the lineup or do they stick with Shanahan? Who plays in net for the Blues now that Joseph is gone?

Also, will there ever be a GM as awesome as Ron Caron? That dude was relentless!
