how does beaker still not get this place?

people ignore the hockey both in good times and bad. there are hockey talk people and normal people (who don't talk hockey much, but do if necessary as part of a non-hockey discussion). the hockey talk doesn't increase in good times. just the tone of the discussion changes.

They are freaking weird in how they are going about this. Never heard of such an open rfp process for an HQ location. Makes sense from amazon’s part. Get as much of a bidding war as you can. Same principal to any corporate sale when the bankers try their best to drum up interest amongst potential bidders.

What a time to be alive. Look forward to multinationals doing this with countries.

Chicago is still my pick.

My money is on Boston, or Cambridge I guess. Good city, good living conditions and they can soak up all the MIT grads they want for the next 50 years.

Toronto I think is the second choice, with the caveat that I obviously don't know who is offering what incentives.

I agree with the greg with Boston and Toronto being on top. I’d add Austin, Texas as well.

Canada has cheap skilled labour and political diversification as an advantage. However we lost our corp tax rate advantage with Trump’s tax cuts (yes Canada was a bit of a Corporate tax rate haven). Risk is obviously US protectionist-retaliatory policies.

Toronto is a huge risk for an American business in the current protectionist climate. Amazon would get crucified by the republicans/trump if that happened. Like, boycotted and shit.

I would be surprised.

Toronto would otherwise be the obvious choice with a large cheap highly skilled workforce that can also draw from Montreal, Ottawa, Buffalo etc.

It’s obviously a big knock for Toronto, but not the only consideration. Protectionism is a two edged sword. US cancelling work visa programs for high educated tech is real bad for these companies. They want to draw global talent. For Amazon, this is a “second HQ”. That’s a weird concept. It could be one of two things. 1) marketing, to get bidding enthousiam higher/make the process more high profile or 2) positioning to have a US HQ and a non US HQ. Retaliatory measure would need to be tempered as it keeps a huge HQ in Seattle.

Still, you’d think they’d wait til 2020 and possibly a more ‘docile’ political climate if they were thinking of partly moving abroad. Or perhaps the protectionist policies got them accelerating their wish for an international home. If that’s the case, this rfp process is a good way to say “hey, we gave every US city a fair chance, not our fault”.

I don't see how the US could boycott Amazon if they went to Toronto. It'll still be a predominantly US company and their official headquarters is going to remain in the US. Like they couldn't really impose tariffs or anything, what would boycott even mean?

The plus to that is they could draw not only on the talent pool of Toronto, Waterloo and the rest of Canada, but if bringing talented immigrants into the US turns challenging, they can just funnel them all into the TO office. That seems like a big draw to me, they must already be staffing out of China, India and Russia in a big way.

Don't trump followers already hate amazon due to the Washington Post connection?

Thats a bigger reason for trump to call for a boycott of amazon.

I just don't see how the regulatory stuff could hurt them.

Consumer boycotts have no real teeth. I'm sure they're not afraid of that.

I have to agree with craig.

Main headquarters in Seattle, can't see how the regulations could hurt them.

And Trump already hates them, so I don't see how getting his Trumpettes to boycott them would work. He's already tweeted enough against Bezos and its done nothing.
