Mustafa, we seem to have independently thought of Celine Dion as PM in response to Oprah (you on fb and me on the politics board).

We also picked the same two Tarkovsky films as our favorites.

So I bought back 3,500$ 3 weeks ago and just sold all my shitcoins for 32,500$. What should I be doing now...? My everything investment is about 5000$ (bought a 1000$ for a friend). I still believe that this going to be a huge market in 2018, but after a massive correction. All shitcoins marketcap went from 80bn to 800bn in 4 months, it just has to get fucked a little. I'm only half bragging, what I really would like to know is when are my taxes being calculated? Is it from the moment I sell or from the moment I transfer my money from the exchange to my bank account?

Also, since I need to pay capital gain tax, would buying REER be a good idea? How else could I be avoiding Justin and Philippe? I've made very little money this year, about $22k..

Anyway, accountant advice would be appreciated.

I’d do tfsa before rrsp at your tax bracket. Keep rrsp space for when you make higher income/taxed at higher bracket.

After my old Soviet movies, I’ve been watching old Swedish movies. Have watched 4 Ingmar Bergman films so far. I like him, but am not, like, blown away either. His agnostic and humanist (with a fair dose of lighthearted humour) approach is refreshing after Tarkovsky’s austere and heavy scoldings approach.

So far, I’ve really liked The Seventh Seal. Will rewatch that one. It’s up there in terms of very good movies.

I liked Wild Strawberries (a nice ´old mens thinks back on his life’ story) and Through a Glass Darkly (schizo chick decending into madness). Both were fine, none sublime.

I thought The Virgin Spring to be meh. Simple little tale, seemed like a folk tale. It was ok.

Next up is Winter Lights and Silence (these two together with Through a Glass Darkly are often interpreted as a bit of a trilogy on faith). Then, Persona. Then, I’ll move on to some of his more recent films (Cries and Whispers and Fanny and Alexander notably). Will try fit a few others too maybe.

Overall, I feel like you sorta get the picture with these directors pretty quickly. Tarkovsky had a severe, scolding message about lack of faith/mysticism in the modern world. Bergman seems to repeat his agnostic and humanist redemption message, in a more lighthearted manner. But I mean, we get it. Pretty quickly too. The themes seem to be continuously recycled. Some interpretations can be outstanding, however, and drive home the message (such as Stalker’s search for the inner most and The Seventh Seal’s knight personifying agnosticism in a desolate world but findind contentment in small humanist moments).

No racist, but you sorta get the Russian with a heavyhanded, flagelating, almost self-hating God seeking approach and a Swede with a lighter, agnostic, humanist, happier message. From my sample of two, I mean.

I also had 2 dates this weekend and 3 more coming up. I'm not joining the keeper league. That league is just another reason to make me feel bad about life.

I had a bit of an epiphany on the train this morn’ on the thinking/consciousness discussion we (ie. I) was having last week. Was finishing up a book on rationality (psychology). As Big D had also alluded to, there is a widely held distinction between ‘type 1’ thinking (subconscious, intuitive, routine) and ‘type 2’ (slow, effortful, conscious, rational). Most goes on in type 1 (as it does for other animals), but some gets kicked up to type 2. Mostly, as I had mentionned, when there is novelty or conflicting objectives. Some people are more inclined towards it than others too. Anywho, the thinking is that type 2 thinking evolved relatively recently and concerns the ability to think abstractly. To make hypothesis. To decouple thinking from the present reality/perceptions.

My little epiphany: what if it’s precisely this ability to decouple (evolved to be able to think abstractly/hypothetically) that causes consciousness? Consciousness is a subjective feeling of experiencing the world. Subjective to who? My thinking is maybe it’s subjective to the mind which has “decoupled” itself from the body. The mind’s ability to think abstractly makes it feel decoupled....giving “us” the impression of being “distinct” (a little guy up there thinking, making decisions). The little guy is not always there. Most of the time, we are in type 1 thinking. On auto-pilot. The little guy is nowhere to be seen. Vanished. However, when a situation triggers type 2 thinking, that mechanism triggers this feeling of “subjectiveness”. Basically, consciousness would be a by-product created by mental processes that have evolved to allow us to think abstractly. More complex social living and language, notably, created ever more demands to think abstractly. Our brains evolved. Frontal lobes grew. Thinking abstractly means being able to decouple thinking from current stimuli. This mental decoupling ability could lead to the feeling we know as “consciousness” -a funny side effect triggered when parts of the brain involved in thinking abstractly are triggered.

Albeit, knowing how things go, approximately 14,765,398 people have probably already thought about it and it can’t be demonstrated beyond hypothesis at this stage.

But I'd have to pay capital gain tax before moving it to my tfsa? If I move it to rrsp I'll have a retour d'impôts.. no?

You make $1,000 in taxable cap gain. Assume 30% marginal tax rate on that at your current income.

Tfsa: put in $700. Doubles until you witdraw on retirement. You have, after tax, $1,400.

Rrsp: put in $1,000. It doubles to $2,000. When you withdraw on retirement, your marginal tax rate is 45%. You have $1,100.

Tfsa is equal/neutral to rrsp assuming your tax rate is same at date you put in money and date you withdraw. If tax rate at contribution is higher than at withdrawal date, rrsp preferable. If opposite, tfsa preferable.

I also had 2 dates this weekend and 3 more coming up. I'm not joining the keeper league. That league is just another reason to make me feel bad about life.

Ive delayed my tattoo inking and piano playing.

LinkedIn tells me that I'm supposed to congratulate you on your increased acting role or some such nonsense. I assume it has something to do with Oprah running for president.
