Speaking of AD's tattoo, what/who is she supposed to be? Why is she holding a ball and whip while sitting on golden chiffon that floats on water?

My router just died... how do I chose a new one? I really don’t need anything special, should I just buy the one on sale?

How big is your place, do you stream 4K content via wifi? Do you have any hardwired Ethernet systems plugged in today or do you want to?

Ignore all of those questions and get a tri-band router from the manufacturer you like the best (Linksys, Netgear, whatever the others are called). I have a Godzilla router in a Linksys EA9500 with two hard wired access points but most people don’t need that.

By the by, mufasta: you going to any of the Bergman showings at the cinémathèque? I may try to catch Shame (which may have been my favorite Bergman film) tomorrow or Through a Glass Darkly on saturday. Never been to the cinémathèque.

Also, finally got to watching Maketa Lazarova (czech film I mentionned back when) lately. It delivered on the ´medival hardcore’ feel (both in terms of harsh storyline and the slightly confused/irrational/magical feel to it). Was expecting even more along those lines, but that’s probably just on high expectations.

Other innaresting palaeontology tidbits I learned:

There was a pressumed ´explosion’ of complex life, particularly animal life, in a short time span (20-25M years) relatively recently (some 500M years ago).
https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cambria ... prov=sfti1

Several mass extinction events, biggest one wiping out some 96% of species some 250M years ago. Because massive volcano eruptions in siberia (it’s always the Russians). This largely « reset » species and led to dinosaurs ruling (until they also experience a mass extinction event).
https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Permian ... prov=sfti1

There are over 50M species currently living. Species don’t last more than a few million years. Humens will eventually either go extinct or transform into something else.

And, of course, the basic realization that life is physical and chemical reactions. Like anything else in nature. It’s really blatant.

Cries and Whispers was interesting. Such cold, fridgid wimenz. Apprently, each of the 4 represent a facet of his moms. Kinda movie tht just leaves you going « geez whiz »! Definitely interesting.

I particularly liked Shame (liked alot of his stuff). It wasn’t autobiographical. Found it to be one of the more poignant anti-war films I’ve seen. I really liked the angle he took. Took Sweden and made it into a generic « shithole ». One of those places in seemingly perpetual conflict. He doesn’t go into politics. Keeps it generic. But you see the transformation of what seems like a swedish yuppish couple into a couple of generic refugees. Like, physical and mental transformation. To a Western audience, I find it brings home the point that people from war torn countries aren’t « different ». They are the product of their environment and so are we and if you reverse environments you reverse the people. Strong humanist message, I found, delivered in a clever way.

Your existence is sealed in specific time-space coordinates within out universe. You will always have existed « there ». So long as our universe, whatever that expanding quatum field is, exists, obvs.

Obviously, this only matters if « you » is something significant. I’d argue that « you » appear to be simply one of the ways in which the universe (the field) manifests itself. That it can reflect upon itself (as we are doing here) is remarkable, but also ultimately potentially quite meaningless. We look at stuff from our vantage point as matter arranged in such a way that it strives to « survive ». For no reason other than that’s the way it’s arranged, by chance. That skews our interpretation of stuff. We look for « meaning » and « survival » just because that is our « code ».

Having lunch now. If anybody is innarested, my best guess as to what is going on is that the « basic state » of « everything » is potential. « Nothing » is not the default state. The default state is potential. Potential, sometimes, randomly, materializes. We can observe this everywhere in our own universe. It’s called quantum fluctuations. From nothing (which in fact is not nothing, it’s something called a Higgs field, basically potential) particles (pairs of positive and anti-particles) « pop » into existance. They do this constantly. Everywhere were there is suppositely « nothing ». Most are annihalated immediately thereafter. Don’t think it them as little balls. Think of it as a flat field breaking out into two opposing waves and cancel themselves out when they run back into each other. These pairs of particles, while they exist, are « entangled ». Something happens to one, an opposing effect can be observed happening to the other, no matter the distance. Instantaneously. It is hypothesized that there may be a physical « tunnel » between the particles. A shorcut. Some think that tunnel may be a « space-time ».

My guess (unproven and likely wrong, but still fun): we are in one of those expanding spacetimes. In a quantum entanglement between particles that materialize, randomly, from ‘nothing’. This is observed all the time in our own universe. Fun fact: our universe has zero net energy. All positive energy is exactly offset by negative energy (gravity). Something from nothing because nothing isn’t nothing it is potential and potential may be the default state of « everything ».

I’ve been thinking about art. Some of the earliest homo sapiens used art. Our species seems to be notably differentiated from others by our social interactions our communications -which fueled brain growth as we developped shared language and symbolism. Humens are, at a fundamental level, very good meme transmitting machines. Art comes right in there. Central to our sharing symbolism, experience and memes. In that sense (and I get that alot through listening to classical music but to each their own), I feel like art is perhaps the most ´brute’ form of communication. In that it is abstract, mostly emotional. It pulls at strings within us beyond our rational, more ´primitave’ and also more ´core’ to how we are built. Science is fairly new. Art is old. Art is a more ‘natural’/older way to communicate. That has pros and cons. Pros: it can connect like nothing else can. Cons: it’s not based on empirical methods. My conclusion: there is a time and place for each.

Not based on empirical methods ?

I would say all that shit in Hamlet is pretty empirical, bruv.

If art is one thing it's goddamn empirical.

I didn’t mean that in a pejorative sense. I mean art is communicated through stories and symbolism. Its observations can be very well thought out and illuminating. It’s not empirical, though. Hence, more error prone. But, more compelling. Also, ´wider’ as it is not constrained to dryly relay what is falsable and confirmed though careful experimentation and/or observation.

"Empirique : Qui ne s'appuie que sur l'expérience."

And one of the common usage of the word is : "Celui qui exerce la médecine sans la connaître."

This very much is "artistic".

Bullshit based only on experience.

this isn't a rape trial. victim blaming works perfectly well here. you can be attacked and not be as defensive in your posts. and your being attacked probably has a lot to do with the defensiveness of your posting.

the problem is that you're the girl who keeps going back to the bar that serves roofie-laced drinks wearing skimpy clothes.
