She had pretty model bahaviour in daycare too, but blew up as soon as she got home with my wife.

My poor wife is having a huge neon flashing arrow pointing at her materializing before her.

But seriously, I think my wife’s disciplined approach exarcerbates but my daughter has been explosive at home since she was like 6 days old.

More and more I think the way to understand her is as somebody that is « on » when she feels she needs to be, but otherwise likes to slack off and relax she doesn’t feel the need. Very similar to me. I always wondered about me whether that was ADD or weak self control or just being unable to fool myself into doing something that doesn’t really need doing. A sorta internal search for balance. I dunno.

I’m taking over the homework though and plan to give her much more freedom/responsability in how she goes about it (like they do at her school). She has 2 week work plans. I got her a big planner. She will work out when she wants to do what and do it as long as it fits to complete on time. If she misses, I’ll push a bit but intend to let her assume the consequences at school of any unfinished work. We’ll see how that goes.

The first time a guy told me of his « one week with my kids, one week single » life, I thought « holy fuck, best idea ever »...people should get divorced even if they are doing ok just for this lifestyle!

Seriously, like I mentionned, my wife has a serioud anxiety and control problem. When she she not stressed out, things are very good. When she is stressed out (relatively often), things are not. I dunno, man. Maybe you can talk to her and stress her the fuck out and never let her calm down, at one point I’ll pass my breaking point and go cruising the bars with you! This sounds like a plan!

That’s no good, she’s typically asleep by like 6:30pm on friday nights. Maybe throw rocks at the windows to scare her a little.

Your solution to your wife's elevated expectations for your 6 year old daughter is to buy her a planner? Like a day planner?

Like you're expecting a 6 year old to plan out their week?

Does your wife have any hobbies ?

Passions ?

Outside of tormenting your daughter, of course.

The solution to this problem is the Dog household mixing some Paxil into their frosted flakes in the morning.

She’s 7, greg. Not 6. I’m not crazy, you know.

Seriously, this is what they do at her school. Give them significant autonomy, with support, and let them reap rewards or consequences for their choices. They literally plan out when they (the kids) want to do this or that activity. Not everything, but « autonomy /responsability» are like cornerstones of the hippy school and my daughter has no issues with that. She LOVES to be given autonomy.

She torments me a bit too. Otherwise not much. That’s a big part of the problem. She’s waaaaaay too focused on getting shit done and is stressed out constantly because of that.

I’m pushing a medication/therapy/exercise/meditation regime. She’s tried all that with varying success in the past. I’m hoping this thing with my daughter will be a significant wake-up call to action.

The only alternative is waiting for the summer, where she is off for 2 months and is quite relaxed and enjoyable. Maybe she needs to retire.

If I think about it, my interests have become reading (mostly science, history, psychology, economy/finance books, mostly written by academics), going to classical music concerts (maybe 10/year), going to the theatre and watching the odd movie/series (with taste increasingly further from mainstream). I do this because this is literally the stuff I enjoy doing.

If any of you idiots are interested, Oxford University Press has a great collection of books (over 600 titles) in its « Very short introduction » series. They get an academic to write a 100-200 page book covering the basics of a given topic. Quality varries, but it tends to be quite good. Books have further reading sections that allow you to follow up in more depth in areas of interest. I think that’s a fantastic way to get a broad overview of many subjects.

Tinder and Bumble. Seriously. Women just flock to you. Well not all of them. Maybe 10%. But 10% of the single population in a place like this means you seriously have to start focusing.

I'm not lonely. I have friends and family and you guys!!

All this doesn't mean I'm happy though..
