Yeah, you can't upgrade so it's very important to get exactly what you want upfront

It's this guy: https://support.apple.com/kb/SP755?loca ... cale=en_US

Base everything on it (no upgrades),so:

Storage
256GB PCIe-based onboard SSD

Memory
8GB of 2133MHz LPDDR3 onboard memory

I want it to be "future proof" a fair bit. This seem fine? Hesitated on getting the 16GB of memory (was like $200) but decided not to.

Sweet machine, though. Happy with it.

If you aren't a power user that's a fine machine. I'm a 16GB memory minimum guy myself but that's how I roll

Dude at Apple Store gave me the student promotion without me even asking for it, so a couple hundred bucks off and some bluetooth earbuds (worth like $250).

I've always had cheap windows laptops at home and semi cheap office type laptops at work. This thing is a revelation, it's really nice.

I doubt I qualify as a power user. I've basically just used my phone the past few years. The screen is so nice, that I think I may do a fair bit of streaming on it. Otherwise, internets, photo/video management stuff. MS office work. I don't really play games.

I don't want the thing to start getting slow in 3-4 years, but at the same time don't want to overkill. Thing could break on it's own or my daughter could drop it or my wife spill wine on it or whatever.

You think 8GB is good for programs some 4-5 years down the road? Can still trade it in for 14 days.

No..I personally don't think 8GB is going to be good enough in 4-5 years. If you can trade it in spend the $200 bucks or whatever it was for the 16GB. I don't care about internal hard drives though so what you have should be fine as you'll need a NAS or external storage of some sort if you get into image editing.

Simple way to look at a computer...CPU dictates how much you can do simultaneously and memory is how fast you can do something

Really?

I'm going to do it if you tell me to, vonbonds. Can order a new one and return this one for 14 days.

On HDD I figured I use iCloud or will just stock stuff on external drive if need be. Hesitated on the memory. Salesdude said 8gb was fine for my type of use, but hard to know down the line. Also the chance the thing doesn't last that long. What would you say is the over/under on the thing making it to/past 5 years?

100% on being a fine laptop you'll have zero remorse with at 5 years old. 16GB is my minimum for memory.

They undersell the thing, then. Sales guy was like 4-5 years is like average. Less if you are unlucky. More if you are lucky. So I kinda went halfway on specs.

They're built like tanks. Only way it won't be good at 5 years old is if you're unlucky with unexpected hardware failures

I take it you upgrade the components, though. Which I can't do on a MacBook.

If I have good confidence in high likelihood of the thing lasting more than 5 years, I don't mind upping some specs.

Nope. It's the exact machine I bought 14 years ago. Runs most stuff (office, iTunes, web) fine, the clock battery is wonky, and typically reverts back to 2002, which causes issues until I reset the clock.

I prefer a 15" screen but get the size you like. Other than that nothing I can think off besides getting a USB drive to be your time machine target

I'm comfy with 13, less cumbersome. Base processor seems ok to you? What's that on the USB drive?

You don't game (me neither) so don't sweat the CPU.

Time machine is the built in backup and recovery tool for OS X. It's awesome and works for even easy bare metal recoveries. You need a compatible external drive to use it. A simple USB drive like a Western Digital MyBook is perfect.
