Rue-Marquette-À-Montreal

Is a pretty sweet name, but I'll come up with something more personal.

Sure, after the fact. But think of the thought process as it happened in real time.

Hey, you wanna buy a black guy? It's like free labour.

Sure. You know, this sounds like a good business idea. We should come up with a good name for these people who we buy and sell.

How about black people?

Sure, but how do we differentiate between black people who are bought and sold, and those who aren't.

I don't get the black/slave references. I just figure it must be something Joe said.

I assume it is something that comes from somewhere. I just disagreed with the premise that it might be hard to believe that the two words (in whatever language) are the same.

Something AD once said about Lebanon. Only brought it up since he said Craig's post was the most racist thing he's heard. IMO he's incorrect considering his Lebanese betheren have the same term for black people as they do slave.

I also think that what I said was probably not as bad as his grandmother telling him she owns people, but whatever. I take it as the compliment it was intended to be.

There was an article about this in yesterday's LaPresse (about the statues, not your family's horribleness). Apparently, there's a bit of a rumble in the UK after the Guardian published a plea to remove Nelson's satues on account of his being a white supremacist and enabler of the slave trade. Innevitably veered into discussing our own Nelson statue in old mtl. Couple U of M historians quoted saying people were stupid, that everybody back then was a white supremacist by today's standards and that this is a pointless exercise and whatnot. The argument that you can't use today's standards to judge people of a different era is an obvious and valid one. But I kinda thought beyond that. Wtf is the point in keeping statues of mens because of their military roles? While I agree that judging a person should be with reference to the mores of his/her time, what's thr relevance today of celebrating currently morally reprehensible individuals? You can celebrate a shit load of stuff other than military "heros". Areas of human achievement well beyond military campains. Heck, just put art in place of former rulers/military mens. Move society forward.

I think they've lost the plot.

Most of The confederate statues and stuff were put up by the daughters of confederacy as a propoganda tool. They are also celebrating people who were guilty of treason.

Going after Cornwallis, Macdonald and Nelson is losing the plot. You can't judge them by today's social mores.

What about if it's not a question of judging, but a question of relevance. Are centuries old military leaders with dubious morals by today's standards really important? Let's move onwards to a post-modern world, recognize the power of narratives in shaping reality and errect statues to shit we want to use to shape the narrative going forward.

Sure. But no need to take the current ones down or rename schools ect because the people they are celebrating may seem repugnant by today's standards.

If the only difference between Lee and Nelson is that one was on the winning side and the other on the losing side, wtf?

Of course I recognize people are stupid and if you rock their world too much they go all anxious about being "uprooted" and fear that without statues to Nelson, cannibalism will become widespread in society, so you probably have to dose progress in order to minimize backlash.

Renaming is fine -I think public spaces and narratives should be forward facing. But like I said, too high a risk of backlash if things are pushed too fast/too deep.

I think both Dracula and warewolf stories are filled with latent white mens fear of the "others" and "foreigners" he considers "savages" and likely to kill and rape his womens. For shame!

I advocate a simple straightforward computer generated alphanumerical naming system for continents, countries, cities, towns, public spaces, people.

We're actually doing well on the milk front. K is producing enough we could probably pump and bottle feed with it most of the time. We're still working on a proper breast feeding though, mostly because if you get it to work you end up saving a ton of time in the long run.

Our first was a lazy feeder too, took about a week of the SNS to get the knack... I feel your pain and it sucked but is ancient history now. I think I still have some of the gear in the basement somewhere.

We never did the finger feed though started off with tube on the nip.

I was all proud of you, greg. I was all like "look at Greg, no didlidallying, it doesn't work, he cuts to the chase and through the bullshit and does what needs to be done instead of torturing the whole family with solutions that don't work or only work at too great a cost for the related benefits". But, no. My illusion is shattered. Greg is but a mortal and an idiot like the rest of us.
