I don't either, I think Max is more of a playmaker, feisty type. A more complete player, but don't know if he has more scoring potential than Chong. Another W that can play C, but not really.

Always been a fan of Max Domi. And he is under team control for 4 more years (Galchenyuk, only 2). Domi's development was mishandled in Arizona. He is a much better player than his stats show.

Initial thoughts are another lateral trade that doesn't really make us better. Galchenyuk has had a tumultuous life outside hockey, so maybe there's the main reason.

The Montreal Canadiens are negotiating a contract extension with Max Domi. Expected to be done in the next few days.

They produce at about the same rate. Kind of a similar player to Drouin isn't he ? When his name was out there last winter, I assumed their interest was in him playing C. Wonder if he played the wing because he could and they have some other C's who can't play wing, or if he sucked at it.

Not a fan. Smaller. Winger for winger. Less of a goal scorer.

Seems a step back, lateral at best if we get lucky. Why go smaller and more playmaker ?

Not a fan.

I expect him to get between 4.5-5M for 5 years, key here is we have a player with similar production and more control over his UFA years. The 5'10 and 10 goals a year is disenchanting though. Maybe they know they're picking Zadina and feel like he can replace Chong's production as soon as next year.

Stats comparison:

Galchenyuk:
6 NHL seasons - 418GP - 108G - 255P
0.61 points per game

Domi:
3 NHL seasons - 222GP - 36G - 135P
0.61 points per game

from a Domi fan

Domi is a guy who will step into our top 6 and be a threat. Trust me, he’s my fav player in the NHL. Essentially this proves we are not drafting Tkachuk , him and domi are the exact same player but Domi is smaller. Domi plays like he’s 6’4 and has amazing vision. Can’t wait.

Chucky is a finished product - starting 7th year in NHL. Timing of the trade is good. Domi is younger and we will be getting UFA years.

Wing is now position where size is not as important. There are loads of productive smallish players in NHL.

That being said, it’s a failed pick, either they didn’t do a good character evaluation or fucked up his progression.

Like this deal for both teams. Domi adds some fire. Galchenyuk can play a little looser.

Domi (23) coming off an ELC and is an RFA. Galchenyuk (24) has two years left at $4.9 million AAV and becomes a UFA after 2019-20.

Domi when he's on is a fireball out there. He's not the biggest and his board work isn't the best. But he competes well for his size and he will throw down for teammates when bigger stronger players will not.

His passing is first rate and he's very good at creating his own zone entries. His shot used to be passable but now is horrible after his hand injury. It may or may not recover and it has already been more than a year.

He is very good off the rush with players he has developed chemistry with but does not immediately fit in on any line. Not the best PP player but he's never had much in the way of a quality PP personnel around him either besides OEL.

OOOH yeah life goes on, long after the thrill of Vinny is gone

It's too bad all the people that could really run the Habs are busy doing talk radio, writing blogs or posting on message boards.

Now, Lajoie is an imbecile, a cretin and a plagiarist, who to use author Dany Laferrière's deliciously withering expression, "lives beyond his intellectual means."

...as serious as a poutine shortage in Chicoutimi during a curling bonspiel...

John Shannon

A Couple of Notes on the Domi/Galchenyuk Deal...

-Both players repped by same agent, Pat Brisson
-You'd have to think Montreal is saving some Cap space, even after signing Max. Maybe...just Maybe... as much as 2 million dollars per year.

Without question at the moment Habs are less talented, a consequence of organization never defining Chucky role, trickle down affect from ongoing weakness at centre.

This is a crucial 3 weeks for Habs - other trades (O'Reilly?) draft and free agency. Story is not complete.

If Gollenchong flourishes as a centre in Phoenix I just might kill Margolis myself.

also, let's not forget that MB wanted to draft Morgan Reilly instead of Galchenyuk. His scouts talked him into Galchenyuk

I don't think he was ever enamoured with the pick
