Training Sets You Free: Senators Camp '17

Post #1 by senate » Mon Aug 28, 2017 11:10 am

Another summer is almost over and you know what that means - you've wasted another year of your dwindling "youth" with that dead-end job, fat wife, and possum-faced children. It also means that hockey is almost hear again.

Rookie camp starts on September 7th and the Senators have released the roster.

Goaltenders:

Marcus Hogberg (Linköping - SHL, Binghamton - AHL)
Jordan Hollett (Regina - WHL)

Defencemen:

Charles-David Beaudoin (UQTR - OUA, Tulsa - ECHL, Binghamton - AHL)
Thomas Chabot (Saint John - QMJHL, Ottawa - NHL)
Cody Donaghey (Charlottetown - QMJHL, Sherbrooke - QMJHL)
Andreas Englund (Binghamton - AHL, Ottawa - NHL)
Macoy Erkamps (Wichita - ECHL, Binghamton - AHL)
Christian Jaros (Luleå - SHL), Maxime Lajoie (Swift Current - WHL)
Jordan Murray (New Brunswick - AUS, Binghamton - AHL)

Forwards:

Drake Batherson (Cape Breton - QMJHL)
Logan Brown (Windsor - OHL)
Filip Chlapik (Charlottetown - QMJHL)
Bobby Dow (Kemptville - CCHL)
Alex Formenton (London - OHL)
Gabriel Gagne (Wichita - ECHL, Binghamton - AHL)
Matteo Gennaro (Calgary - WHL),
Parker Kelly (Prince Albert - WHL)
Jack Rodewald (Wichita - ECHL, Binghamton - AHL)
Pius Suter (Zurich SC - Swiss-A),
Jordan Topping (Tri-City - WHL)
Colin White (Boston College - H-East, Binghamton - AHL, Ottawa - NHL)

There are only 22 names on the 23-man roster the Senators released, so either they forgot Francis Perron or he is injured and they haven't found a tryout to replace him with yet.

There are 6 tryouts in rookie camp, the two most interesting are Pius Suter, a 21-year old who played under Crawford in the Swiss league, and Matteo Gennaro, Winnipeg's 7th rounder in 2015 who had 43 goals in the WHL last season.

(Time to dust off the keyboard and show sings of life again)

This will be an interesting training camp for the Senators. From the outside, this is a team that has currently depleted its prospect cupboard and that has struggled to replace the bounty of players that have graduated in recent years and in particular from the amazing 2011 draft year (Zibanejad, Pageau, Dzingel, Prince, Claeson and Noesen/Puempel). If many are quick to point out that Ottawa has some of the fewest games played by drafted players since 2012 (with Lazar taking a bulk of those games to himself), it also points to a sort of second watershed in our prospect pool development where a secondary cast of un-sexy, character, big body long term projects are starting to come to term.

As such it will be very interesting to see and track the development of some of a larger gangly prospects such as Harpur, Hogberg and Paul and the more un-sexy yet subtle players like Jaros, Claesson and Englund. At face value, none of these offer much to the write about in media publications, but in terms of organizational depth, they are all key pieces in rounding out the bottom 6 and bottom 3 of your offence and defence - even more so in a Guy Boucher system.

While Harpur and Claesson are known commodities right now, I am most interested in Jaros at the moment. I really believe that out of our prospects, he is possibly the most suited candidate to replace a guy like Methot long term. While he has become known for his physical play in his own zone, he is extremely underrated in is capacity to jump up in the play as a 4th man in. It will be interesting to see if he can force a way into the extended lineup come first cuts. (note: did not imply that he was going to pair up with Karlsson when mentioning Methot, more an indication of type of player)

If I am not as concerned as most publications and pundits when it comes to Ottawa recently having drafted big body players who needed more time to fill out their frames and develop styles of play that will only really shine in the pros like Brown and Bowers (mainly because our 2015 draft seems like it will produce a consistent 160 gp per year from two top 15 bonafide prospects), I do believe that we have lost some pure skill picks in recent years such as Dahlen that we dearly need to replace. It will be interesting to see if Dorion will be able to flip some our bulk of defensive prospects into a few more risky skilled based forwards.

I would expect that Pius Suter was entirely Guy Boucher's call given he's Suisse.

I thought Suter had played for Crawford and was in consideration for a contract when they signed DiDomenico last season.

Great to see Perron coming out of the gates flying in yesterday's game and the guys at RDS seemed to have been really impressed by him. He is an intriguing prospect in the sense that it was always going to be a question of how much could he and would he commit to physical conditioning. Last year, it was painfully obvious that he believed he could survive in the AHL on skill alone. He has admitted to it and that it was a wake up call. Brassard and Brennan both wrote pieces about how Alex Burrows was instrumental into his development this summer and that under his eye and more serious commitment to the physical and nutritional aspects of training he has gained nearly 15 pounds. Randy Lee was also quick to point out that he was in the top percentile of tests during the rookie camp this week.

http://www.lapresse.ca/le-droit/sports/ ... 8112300342

Hopefully he is able to take growth curb that mimics Hoffman's in a way. Up until now there career paths have been remarkably similar, even down to the stats (+/-100 pts final seasons in the Q, and over 1.3 PPG playoffs) and trophies (MVP and Most Sportsmanlike). If he can put together a 20/25G and 50+ PTS with a sniff in the big leagues this year and keep his A once the season starts in Belleville, we could start believing in a role on the team for him in +/- 2 years.

Chris VandeVelde signed a PTO. He had 15 points in 81 games with the Flyers last season. So, better watch out Chris DiDomenico!

Brassard and Karlsson are injured and will likely miss all of camp. Dzingel had wrist surgery in the offseason and may miss the start of camp.

Macarthur is a question mark. There is speculation from Bob Mackenzie that he won't be cleared by doctors. Also, he recently put his Ottawa home up for sale.

Two rookie camp tryouts, Parker Kelly and Hockeybroads favourite, Pius Suter, made the main camp.

Chris VandeVelde and Brendan Woods are on PTOs.

Was it reported that he suffered another concussion during the playoffs?

He pinched a nerve in his neck during the Rangers series and that bothered him the rest of the playoffs. No one knows (well, Bob Mackenzie might given his tweet about Macarthur's health) whether that was related to his concussion problems or if the neck injury was worse than originally thought .

I think that cases such as Vermette and Crosby prove that there are bizarre and yet to be fully understood links between concussions and neck injuries. Really hope the best for Mac but realistically, he is not going to be starting with the team come October given the lack of information that has been given to the press. Wish him all the best and can't wait to see him in our lineup again

The injuries to Karlsson and MacArthur ( :( )do open up interesting doors for Chabot and White with a coach that has historically been reluctant to lean on rookies.

It is interesting to see Phaneuf and Chabot paired together early on for that reason. If Boucher has confidence in Phaneuf's leadership role and capability to help young defensemen grow, he might opt to take Ceci out from under his wing and let Chabot develop by his side.

It will also be interesting then to see if Ceci has the capacity to take a pairing on by himself. Paired with one of the plethora of new blueliners (Harper, Claesson, Wideman and etc), will he be able to step up and start dictating play a bit more? While Ceci seems to polarize the fan base, it is easy to overlook his age and the consistency he has at that age. At 23 he is our youngest player after Chabot, White and Harpur and ranks in the top 25 D-Men in the league in TOI and the 2nd youngest of that list (While Ristolainen is 22 and Slavin 23 he does have more games than them). Since his London days he has always been a very mature player that has somewhat found his role on teams by playing a balancing act between his offensive capability and trying to act as a stabilizing maturing element on his teams. It will be interesting to see if this year is the year where we see him start asserting himself a bit more offensively or if he stays in a safe and cautious mode trying to own a pairing. I haven't given up hope that once he begins feeling more comfortable with his game and the system, we start seeing more glimpses of a player that can dictate pace more and put up more points.

Yawn, stretch, scratches belly, is that hockey i smell? Ohh its the leafs smell that is souring it. Well we won the rookie tourney. Winning grapefruit league has always been bad luck, dont know if that applies to hockey or not. But i hope we find a way tonight. I too am looking forward to Jaros trying to find a volchenkov type role and along with Chabot really improving our d.

Tough. White wasn't really standing out tonight but wants to prove he's committed and goes down to injury blocking that shot.

It's a 6-2 pre-season game but you know he wants to do things to stand out and make the roster.

Few notes on the game

Hoffman, Stone, Pageau, Ceci and Anderson all looked like they were in mid-season form. Nice to see that their shouldn't be any effect from the short summer early on. Ryan and Smith looked like he they had their legs going to but not nearly as involved as the others.

Phaneuf really doesn't look like he is comfortable handling fast first lines. He was getting spinned around quite often. I really hope that the plan isn't to put him in the top 2

Oduya looked like he still has some really good wheels. Was surprised to see him chase after Nylander and catch up to him. Showed some really nice angling and sitck work against fast players too. He might actually be OK with Karlsson should they decide to pair them.

Chabot looked like things started to click once he started feeling the puck again. His capability to hold on to pucks is uncanny and his speed and elusiveness was on full display the few times he was able to dump and retrieve his own pucks on the entry. His stick work defensively is not as good as I was expecting and wasn't swiping and pushing pucks all that much. He does however use his reach, wingspan and size to angle players off quite nicely. I love his footwork in the defensive zone. I haven't seen a player close off passing lanes and shots to the net, in full speed going backwards, while continuously adjusting to forward in a long time.

I stick by my comparison that Jaros will end up being a Methot type player for us. He is engaged physically and has a mean edge to his game that he uses to clear the net and get pucks out of the corners. Offensively, he has a great heads up exit that is powered by a really smooth stride. He also is capable of finding players for a nice first pass.

Up front, I really really like Suter's game. He is NHL ready. It's weird that he is opting to go back to Swiss league after tonight's game. Wonder is that will change. He has great wheels and was everywhere on the ice. A prototypical Boucher player.

White had a quiet game. Was always in position and coming in back deep. Boucher seemed to have liked what he saw as he put him up with Ryan and Stone at the end of the game. I could see that being an interesting line.

Gagne is an intriguing prospect. You can tell what the upsides are that got some scouts excited. He skates well, display some nice lateral agility/shiftiness and really seems to do well with the puck in confined areas (along the boards, up in his skates and in front of the net). But he also seems to go into neutral a bit too much and puck watch. Not sure if that can be taught. If was more dogged and had a bit more of a dynamo motor to him, he would definitely be a great prospect.

Perron showed that if he can gain some strength he will be a really nice player. Loved his ability to slow the play down and drive the play towards the front of the net. Will be a fun player to keep tabs on in Belleville.

For White, this injury is a crushing blow with that Brassard spot up for grabs to start the year. But it does make things interesting for our other kids.

I'm hoping Logan Brown is up to the task of challenging for a spot. It's also Nick Paul's last real chance to make the team so maybe he'll answer the bell.

I'd like them to ask Suter to hang around on short term basis. Seems like they could almost promise him a spot now...

Apparently, Pius is required to return to his Swiss team this week and can't stay any longer without the Senators ponying up the cash to buyout his contract.

Garrioch is stating that we are "aggressively" going after Duchene. You have to think that that deal would require Ceci + White/Brown/Bowers + a pick. While it would really hurt our immediate defense and it would suck because Ceci is starting to reach his potential, if we are serious about going for it in this current Turris, Stone, Karlsson cap window, Duchene would bring insane depth to our center position. Duchene, Turris, Brassard, Pageau, Smith looks real good.

Why trade for Matt Duchene when you can get Pius Suter for free?

Parker Kelly came as a tryout to rookie camp and just got a 3 year ELC out of it.

If we had the assets to be able to trade for Duchene that would be impressive. We might, but not gonna hold my breath. I remember noticing Parker Kelly at the rookie tourney, in a hey who is that Parker Kelly guy kinda way. Hopefully he canearn his way to using that elc. Jaros is definitely intriguing, i can see why they may have felt that Methot was expendable, im really rooting for him. P.Marleau debut, even as a vet he may want to make a statement. Go Sens GO

Condon sure did look sharp, cant really fault him on either of those goals. Hope Jeff's kid can continue making a statement too. Daigle responsible for the 1st rookie cap and now Turris responsible for the new face off rule? Not a terrible start like i was expecting

I like the faceoff rule, but I'd move the hash marks in about 4 inches. So only blatant skate in the dot is called.
