The Brown goal was nice and his game really improved my views on him. I thought there was a real possibility he would be tall and awkward (kind of like Tyler Myers) but he looked better than I expected.

Still very early and there are no guarantees but my biggest worry with Brown was the height making him awkward on the ice against higher caliber players and while it's pre-season and many of the Leaf guys were AHLers... he did not look awkward to me in the same way a guy like Myers did (and I understand Myers had some great early seasons with Buffalo and you can argue injuries is what derailed him but I think that awkwardness he always seemed to possess did play a role).

Brown just never got healthy last year. Did he look like he lost a year of development?

If Duchene is really a target, I wonder if they have inquired into Andrea Anathasiou from the wings. Talented, younger, though a negotiating Hard case.

To me the team is at the point where they have two intertwined goals:
1. Win
2. Keep Karlsson

You can't move chabot, but I don't think they can truly stand pat.

I don't want to move anything more than Wideman, brown and 2nd for duchesse. We've been on the wrong end of these too many times not to won one.

The Sens should use their depth & target Charles Hudon in a trade. :mitch_earthling:

Probably wouldn't cost more than Boro & a prospect.

Team was probably in shock after that interview where Dorion was talking extensions and somehow snuck in Borowiecki with Turris and Anderson.

Two phantom calls to give the Jets 5 and 3's both of which converted cost the Sens the game. I guess it's good for the home team to win in the preseason.

Few notes from last nights game.

While Oduya looked great in his first game against Toronto he looked totally beat by the speed of the Jets. Its a bit weird being that his skating looked surprisingly above average against the young Leafs. You have to wonder if the same day travel and the lack of real incentive to compete shows off more on veterans like Oduya.

Chabot had a nice quiet game. His play along the boards was solid all night. He fell down a bit early on the GWG goal but those are things I expect him to get better at.

Formenton looks like the real deal. Get me on the hype train and let this kid go through 9 games at the pro level and then send him back with the mandate to dominate in the CHL, dominate in the WJC and then bring him back if need be. I really don't want the team to rush him, but he might really be one that got away in the draft due to his insanely late birth date (2 days off the cutout) and the stacked London team he was playing with. Up until last night we knew he had speed to burn and great puck control and speed, but his hands were on full display on the breakaway. I'm getting excited thinking of Boucher deploying Dzingle and Formenton as torpedoes. They give no room and space to the defensemen to think.

Our PP....

What is there to say. I really liked what I saw on the in-zone play. The umbrella configuration with a bumper in the slot was getting some real nice looks like night. Curious to see if that bumper is capable of sustaining that level of contribution once the season starts and physicality starts wracheting up a notch, but he was key in allowing the top left and right players to collapse down and come back up and open up quick new lanes. Seemed very promising.

However.

WTF is up with the entry. The set play on entry seems like the even more convoluted and bound to fail version of our set play last year. The minute the puck carrier drops the pass back, the opposing teams know right away to seal the boards and double team the man standing at the blue line. I really don't get it. The minute the second puck carrier who picked up the drop pass, passes it off to the man at a stand-still he needs to immediately push it forward to the player coming in to the zone. But unless you have the precision of a swiss watch maker it will never happen. The team simply can't expect to gain entry on such a complicated and predictable set up. For a system that is all based on converting plays with low failure rates, this one seems soooo far fetched and with a crazy stupid high risk/reward. I,m baffled

Anderson extended.

Formenton's showing is just odd. Drafts are a snapshot of value a team the time, but to see the nearly 50th overall pick pushing himself forward is all kinds of awesome. I could be wrong, but seems like the type of player who usually is capable of jumping into contention from beyond the first round is more of a defensive specialist/grinder type. Formenton is just all kinda unusual, and pretty awesome given that wouldn't mean Chabot/White/him are all of a sudden all realistic pieces.

Good to hear about the power play. Zone entries, well it's the dregs of preseason so hopefully that gets solved once things matter.

Formenton is a late birthday kid who was buried in the bottom 6 of a deep Jr. team. Good on the scouts picking him out given his limited ice time.

But I don't think he gets this spotlight if the Sens were healthy.

I haven't followed him closely but he's shown flashes of brilliance. Hopefully he becomes a top 6 guy eventually.

As for Anderson signing - I will never criticize a GM for this kind of a move. He might be a bit old for an athlete but goalie career paths are strange to say the least and Anderson has been a rock for us for so many years.

Kind of like Montreal - we might maybe regret it but you can't gamble against your proven #1 goalie.

Chabot and Harpur down to Belleville. I think they are both already better than Wideman and Boro, but I guess that is the drawback of having two-way contracts.

McCormick is on waivers for assignment to Belleville. If Brassard isn't healthy, that means that Brown and Formenton made the team.

Glad to hear Chabot going to the b-sens, he didnt look ready. Also glad we still get to call them the b-sens.

And to think I was worried the team would have a stellar pre-season record thus jinxing themselves for the reg season. Whew, crisis avoided.

Don’t like the contract to Anderson. I mean, what if a meteor falls out of the sky days before the trade deadline next year, killing Andy just as a bottom team with an elite goalie is willing to trade him to us for peanuts. We would be locked in with no possible cap relief. This is bad asset management. I would have signed him for $200 k less and for only 18 months so that we have options. But Dorion just doesn’t understand that market value is what you are willing to pay, not the result of a negotiation. As the song says - you should always be able to get what you want.

Just remembered that Formenton was drafted with the pick Calgary gave us for Lazar, who (unsurprisingly) had a poor showing in training camp.

Early days, but Dorion must feel pretty good about that one at the moment.

Will be interesting to see what Lazar does. He's a strange player to watch, not sure if he'll ever get the right linemates to prop him up.
