So the haul was...
Tierney, Demelo, Norris, 1st, 2nd? 2nd?

Re: Ottawa Senators are tied for first - 2019 of season thread
Duclair is absolutely worth a 1-year with this roster, so that's good news.
As with Stone, I'm content to see EK stay in the Western Conference where we don't have to face him very often. Every time I see either of them it's another dagger through the heart. And the extra pick is nice to have.
Time will tell on the term of that contract. Karlsson's sustained a lot of injuries. I've always maintained that he's too brilliant a player for longevity to be a real concern, even if his skating slows down. But now the Sharks have bet big on it.

Re: Ottawa Senators are tied for first - 2019 of season thread
Just to beat on a dead horse, here is why Karlsson the Senators were never going to sign Karlsson: his deal has a NMC and $52 million in signing bonuses, including $10 million in the 2020 lockout season.
Also, McKenzie got it wrong this morning, the deal is $92 million, not $88 million - so an average of $11.5 million per.

With that bonus paid, the Senators would only have to pay Zaitsev $1.5 million this season. Also, Zaitsev doesn't have another signing bonus until 2022.

Dorion gave the Rangers a 2nd for paying Brassard's $2 million bonus. I wonder what he will give the Leafs for eating $3 million.

You called it. We burned a pick on this, again.
I have no idea why on earth we sought out this trade other than to further lower our total financial hit. It wasn't to dump Ceci - we didn't need to qualify him. Zaitsev has a terrible contract and has negative value. Brown is filler - not hard to find guys who could score for 2/3s of a year and be dumped at the deadline. It's like they were determined to waste money on an RHD but couldn't find a way to inflate Ceci's cap hit, so went off in search of plan B.
I would be more likely to respect the strategy if they were transparent about it. But only maybe - the only way this makes sense is as cap manipulation for one year, but that's one of five (5!) years we need to pay Zaitsev. As far as plans go, it's not only discouraging but short-sighted.

Re: Ottawa Senators are tied for first - 2019 of season thread
We're also signing Ennis and Hainsey for some reason.
There are basically four kind of Dorion transactions, all shedding light on another weakness:
1) Sending out good players who don't want to stay.
2) Bringing in players with inflated cap hits to save Eugene money.
3) Sending out his failed character projects.
4) Bringing in his coach's pet projects.
Is there a substantive deal since the first Duchene trade that doesn't fit into one of those four archetypes?

Hard not to view everything through financials, but in theory just bringing in some vets does seem worthwhile... better than harpur

After working a half day for Canada Day, looks like Dorian is taking the rest of the summer off.
Though in all fairness, Melnyk probably doesn’t pay hockey ops during the summer months.

In a happy coincidence, Chicago just happened to have paid Anisimov's $2 million signing bonus yesterday.

The Senators actually sign someone to a long term contract.
I thought backloaded deals were out of fashion in the NHL, but whatever.

New reality? With all the rfA holdouts I think we are seeing the same thing as in baseball - pay for youth and screw the old folks.
That said, what is chabot worth in this comparison of value?

Losing Chabot for next to nothing will be a step up for losing Stone, Duchene, and Karlsson for next to nothing. So I guess Dorion is right, the worst is behind us.

Re: Ottawa Senators are tied for first - 2019 of season thread
It actually should be watchable soon. You have to say, they have a really solid plan with the load up of young guys. The depth there rivals the best point in franchise history (late 90's) in terms of kids to watch. Should be more quality next year as well. Last season was really the bottom. We'll look back as the Boucher years as such a transition. Even him as a coach, almost getting to the finals to pretty much dead last back to back years later. Kinda wild. Not going to sound like a marketer, but this team will give you more enjoyment than you've had in years as we move forward.
It was dark days the last couple seasons. Just look as some depth guys that had roster spots. It was bad. And they'll lose a ton of games this year but it will still feel better knowing that each month will be slightly better.
If they can sign Chabot long term, they'll double their season ticket base in under six months.

The NHLPA declined to reopen the CBA, so it will stay in effect until 2022. Which means signing bonuses are here to stay. So the Senators are (more) fucked.
