Except Batherson can skate.

It seems like so long ago that Stone was out there a step behind every player as one of the roughest skaters you’ll ever see in a WJC. But boy could he score. So smart. I will admit I would have traded him shortly after that tournament because I thought he was over hyped and would never be able to skate in the new faster NHL.

He’s come so far and worked so hard in his skating. You can always tech things like skating, but you can’t teach the pure mind that mark Stone has for the game.

Back to Batherson. He looks good. Actually hard to tell him and Formentin apart, which is a good thing. Both lanky but with great wheels. Batherson has a really nice long reach and gets the shot off quick. He emits a smart, calm personality just watching him, which I like. Seems like a easy one to teach and coach.

The lone bright spot this year has been these two picks from last year. Both quite noticeable. Has there ever been two OTT players on Canada? When was a Cowen there, with Stone? I don’t remember many. I remember Spezza sucked his big year at the WJC, which I guess was foreshadowing on him in big games and championships in his career.

I remember Jeff Glass backstopping Canada to gold on such a good team that I could have kept it under 10 each game. Nice to see him finally in the nhl so many years later.

Building a cottage closish to Belleville, so I went to a Friday night game the other week. The Yardmen is a pretty decent arena post-reno, except for the terrible beer selection. Overall, it was a very pleasant experience to spend $45 and get parking, great seats and 2 beers. And to top it off, I hit up the new Shorelines Casino and won $130 on the slots. Belleville will be on the NY Times Places To Visit next year. Book it.

The game sucked though. The BSens looked throughly out-coached by whoever coaches the Wilkes-Barré Syndrome Penguins. Some thoughts:

Nick Paul had a big rush once. If he was 19, I would call it a flash of his potential.

Filip Chlapik oozes skill out of all orfices, but needs to assert himself more. He looks like someone that could thrive right now in the NHL with good linemates.

Colin White scored 2. He's got a bit of a shot, which is good to see.

Ben Harpur was good. Lots of confidence with the puck. I still think he projects to become an NHL D-man, even if it's bottom pairing.

Jaros was good too.

Hogberg got pulled.

JOB was flying all night. He is rising from the ashes and will be centering the 2nd line of your Stanley Cup winning Ottawa Senators in 2019.

Chris Kelly LOL. I was 2 beers in and started feeling warm and nostalgic. They announced him as an Olympian and we gave him a standing O. Unfortunately I don't know if he could still score a goal in the Special Olympics.

Hey Murph. Will do. But I'm a Baby Sens fan now, not an Adult Sens fan. Expect shitty prospect updates and old man rants about Ottawa not stocking the farm. Also pics of me and GM / Spin Class Instructor Randy Lee doing meth in his truck.

Sounds better than watching the Adult Sens team.

Random thought.

I was checking out Batherson's progress this year and noticed his team has two 20-year-olds having great seasons.

Alex Barre-Boulet has 99 pts. in 52 games. Had a PTO with Vegas last September.

Alexandre Alain has 72 pts. in 52 games. Had a PTO with Tampa in September 2016.

Anyone following the Q closely? Should these guys be targets to be signed as UFAs?

The Lightning already signed Barre-Boulet, because of course they did. Alain is unsigned, obviously also on Tampa's radar, but is not a late bloomer like Batherson. In fact Alain was a high pick coming into the Q, and has just been slow and steady to develop. I'm surprised he hasn't signed though, considering he has good size, can skate and no red flags.

Also from Batherson's club, will be interesting to see if Joel Teasdale goes in this year's draft. It was a surprise he went undrafted last season (Button had him 11th to open the season), and he's only improved.

Interesting Forward Prospect?

Brad Morrison was drafted by the Rangers 3 years ago but never signed. He bumped along in the WHL for the next two season without getting even close to a point a game. He was traded last summer, and ... got less than a point a game with his new team.

He was traded at the deadline to a new team and got 40 points in 32 games. That's a bit of an improvement. Well done.

He has played 12 games in the playoffs so far. 30 points. Holy shit!

Talk about a late bloomer. Oh yah, and he has Ass Burgers.
