Dorion announced that Anderson's wife has cancer. No word on what kind and what stage, but considering that Dorion was on the verge of tears when told the media, I'm guessing it is something serious. Nonetheless, she encouraged Anderson to help his team and he will rejoin the Senators tonight. He may or not play tomorrow. Ominously, O'Connor will stay up because the team doesn't if Anderson will need to leave again.

Meanwhile, Hammond is out at least a week with groin pull.

What's with this organization and cancer? Sheesh. I'm definitely not stepping into the CTC again...

So:

Anderson is gone again, unknown for how long. Condon will be starting.

Stone is injured, McCormick is up and in.

Chabot is down, Claesson is up.

The Claesson thing was pretty funny because yesterday Dorion had a press conference where he basically said "we don't want to carry extra players on the roster".

What does he do? Carries an extra player on the roster immediately after Chabot is sent back down.

Looks like Wideman is hurt. Boucher said that some of the D were banged up and Wideman didn't take the pregame skate.

The Federal government has said no to an outdoor game on Parliament Hill. Here is Heritage Minister Joly's statement:

Image

The Parliament Hill game was rumoured to be a Harper pet project, so its not surprising that the Trudeau government nixed it. Also, it was a logistical nightmare and whatever.

Yet you can have 3,000 degenerates on Parliament Hill during 4/20.

With Zibanejad gone, it's now kind of amazing to look back at that 2011 draft. Three first rounders that were going to be the heart of our rebuild. Only one is left in the organization, and he looks like a marginal NHLer.

There's a decent chance that FOUR of our later picks from that draft - Pageau, Prince, Dzingel, Claesson - will all have better NHL careers than Noesen and Puempel.

Hell, Max McCormick has an outside chance of making it five.

Which pretty much sums up why Bryan Murray had to go. He had a blank cheque to build the team that year Pageau was just about the best player he got.

Pretty inevitable with Condon's recent play, Hammond's play since the playoff run, and Hammond's inherent brittleness.

http://ottawacitizen.com/opinion/columnists/eugene-melnyk-responds-to-the-citizen-ottawa-senators-fought-hard-for-an-nhl-game-on-the-hill

Melnyk wrote:And now, I read Tuesday’s editorial implying that, as the owner of the Ottawa Senators, I should have rushed to endorse a deal to bring the “cash cow” outdoor game to TD Place – and if I don’t, then I am not a “smart businessman.”

And so it seems, rather than applaud our attempts to do something spectacular for Ottawa and our hockey-loving nation, your editors would rather point a finger of blame – squarely on the Senators and me.

The blame and criticism are quite honestly difficult to endure as it unfairly suggests I don’t care about the city, nor do enough to support it. Really?

Here is the Citizen editorial Melnyk is replying to: http://ottawacitizen.com/opinion/editorials/editorial-we-can-still-score-that-outdoor-nhl-game

It is noticeable that his rebuttal does not address the most damning facts as to why the Parliament Hill game fell apart:

As originally conceived, the game would have been played before about 6,000 fans, just like the first NHL game here. That would have been fun. However, it wouldn’t have been the 35,000-seat cash cow that the NHL and Senators owner Eugene Melnyk preferred.

A temporary stadium of the size typical of NHL outdoor events would have turned Parliament Hill into a construction zone for four months – just as the capital was being flooded with sesquicentennial tourists. The cost was prohibitive too. A somewhat smaller temporary stadium was built for an NHL game in Vancouver in 2010 – for $14.5 million. Federal taxpayers would have been expected to make a financial contribution. Even for a government that loves infrastructure, it’s hard to justify spending millions for something that will be used for a day, then torn down.

Shutting down the Parliament Hill lawn for four months? Pure hubris.

Puempel picked up by NYR.

Our top 4 picks from the 2011 draft are now gone:

Mika - Rangers
Noesen - Anaheim
Puempel - Rangers
Prince - Islanders

Ceci's offensive production has got to get going a little bit at some point. He's on pace for 10 points on the season, all assists. He's been getting regular power play time and hasn't done anything with it. But from what I've seen, he's been skating well, getting involved offensively and doing a lot of good things in that half of the ice. What is he doing wrong on the offensive side of things?

I know he and Phaneuf have their struggles in their own zone, but I think we'd all be going a little easier on him if Wideman wasn't doubling his offensive production in half the minutes. His plus/minus wouldn't look so ugly either.

In today's 30 Thoughts, Friedman said that the Senators have interest in Teddy Purcell but don't have room in the budget for his $1.6 million. Also:

15. The Senators are very much in it, but thin up front with injuries. Bobby Ryan is going to try to play hurt on the West Coast. If they could add another player, it would do them a world of good — but that’s Eugene Melnyk’s call.

Player Safety gets to flex and say "look ma, I got guns!".

But you know next time with different players they're going to cower in the corner and not do their jobs. That being said - I dislike Borowiecki quite a bit so I don't care that it was 2 games.

It was a really tough camera angle for definitively seeing what hit Karlsson and where. Definitely could see the stick coming up though, looked pretty penalizable, potentially a spear, but cant tell if it was a hit in the chest or face and with the end of the blade or not. But if it was a stick in the face, it would look a lot like a standard high sticking penalty often seen that gets 2 minutes. Not one of the clear head shots that the league has announced they are focused on and suspending for.

Smith signed to an extension - 4 years, $3.25 million per.

Seems like a good signing. I am amazed that the deal is that cheap.

Oh, and here are a couple superfluous Garrioch tweets to annoy TGR.

Woah, that is good value. He really wanted to stay. I thought he would price himself out of town.

Makes sense that this follows on the heels of MacArthur's announcement. Mac is basically done, so Smith gets his roster spot, and the bulk of his cap space.

Good news for the team. We don't have a lot of guys that bring both grit and offense, and we're thin on LW. Smith can play in all situations. I bet he gets Neil's 'A' before too long.

Can the Sens protect Dzingel if Smith is locked up? Assuming 7 forwards, that means protection for Ryan, Stone, Hoffman, Turris, Pageau, Brassard, Smith.

I think that the Senators protect Dzingel over Ryan on the assumptions that, one, Vegas won't want to take on Ryan's salary and, two, Vegas would be most interested in taking a defenceman from the Senators since 2 of Methot, Ceci, and Wideman will be left unprotected.

Ballsy move. But I guess what Vegas does will depend on who else is available from the rest of the league. Hard to know at this point, and I'm too lazy to read the various speculation rosters out there.

EDIT: Ok I read a few, and the general consensus seems to be that Ryan will be exposed and not taken. Not so ballsy after all. Be funny if he did get selected, just to rile up the internet GMs.
