Playing devil's advocate, Duclair was on a hot streak for the first half of the season and that hot streak, considering the rest of his career outside his first season in Phoenix, was an aberration.

You can zoom in and zoom out all sorts of ways. Duclair produced decently down the stretch in 2019 too (8 goals in 21 games). You could say he had 29 goals in his first 58 games with Ottawa, when he was playing with something to prove, and then had 2 goals in his last 29 playing for a team that fully embraced the tank.

Extending a minimum qualifying offer still seems like a no-brainer to me.

And if there are no takers? Everyone just assumes trades are easy, but GMs are cash strapped, and they aren't taking on more unless you eat their shit.

So letting him test the market might be the right course. He may come crawling back, and if not, it's no huge loss.

Then come out and say so when you non-tender him. If any team ends up signing him for more than his QO, there was a missed opportunity to snag at least a late pick for him.

Dude had a sub 2-million QO for 20+ goals a year. Trades aren't easy, but there's gotta be something you can do with that.

If it went to arbitration, unless the award was North of $4.5M they couldn't walkway. They determined they didn't want him at $4Mish and likely couldn't find a trade partner, so said this is our offer take or leave it.
