I don't think he's coming back, but I'm curious about dan reaction if he gets trade to Dallas for a second and a prospect...

I wish Methot well no matter where he goes, now that I know Toronto is not in the cards.

The best part of the Methot NTC is all the Leaf fans on twitter angry that an Ontario boy doesn't want to play for the Leafs.

I had meant fan reaction, but Dan is a reasonable measuring stick.

It would be amusing if come January we trade a 3rd for Methot, and have Vegas cover half his salary...

I'm not a Phaneuf fan, but the prospect of losing two top-4 defencemen in less than a week is unnerving.

I'm sold. The rest will sort itself out. Worst case scenario, we're looking at Jim O'Brien 2.0. And we did some serviceable games out of him eventually.

Making a trade in the hopes of landing a UFA is risky, especially with Ottawa's history of attracting UFAs.

With Methot out of the picture, I assume that Dorion thinks that the idea of playing with Karlsson will lure veteran d-men here like never before.

Seems like we are drafting for speedy depth forwards right now. But not really for talent or high ceiling. I would have liked to see another Dahlen-style pick by this point to replace that kind of asset.

Methot to Dallas for a 2020 2nd and a prospect goalie from the 7th round of this year's draft...lol. They could've had Bobby Ryan.

I think Dorion wasn't playing mcphee game and mcphee miss read the market for a D with a partial NTC.

Wonders if Dorion shopped Methot to find what teams were interested, and told Methot to adjust his no trade list... That would be funny.

They were allowed to trade through a third party, not with Vegas directly until 2018.

There was no rule against trading an expansion draft player back to his old team. The media and expert fans interpreted the rules wrong. Lebrun confirmed it with the league this morning:

You rang?

I liked our draft for the most part. Really like Formenton and Batherson as picks - both late bloomers, toolsy and raw. Formenton is a plus-plus skater who, if he fills out and retains his speed, is a solid bet for a Viktor Stalberg career. Hard to project his offensive skills yet. Batherson has better hands but less skating.

I'm largely indifferent to the Bowers pick, in that he's not the player I hoped we'd draft, but the guys I would have strongly preferred had already been selected, and I wasn't keen on any of the big names who had fallen (Tolvanen, Hague, Kostin and so on). The pick is along the same lines as our Lazar and White picks, and we know how one turned out, and will have to wait on the other. At least he's off to a good system known for developing offence, and he seems to have more hands than Lazar, but less skating as well.

I'm not a huge fan of taking safer picks in the first round, but considering our scouts' willingness to take flyers on toolsy players outside the first (eg. Ahl, Gagne, Chlapik, Gendron, Lindberg...), I appreciate the strategy of ensuring a solid return on our first rounders. I just tend to feel safe players can easily bust as well - see Lazar - but the organization is obviously most comfortable with players they identify as possessing certain intangibles.

Drafting goalies is cool. I have no idea how to evaluate them, but considering our future is Hogberg and Driedger, we should continue to scoop up cheap lottery ticket in net.

Mcphee via Sportsnet Discussing methot

“We don’t really have cap issues, but we did have too many players,” he said. “And as you know, if you don’t move them now, good luck trying to move them after July 4 or 5 because at that point, everything locks up, there’s no liquidity, and people can’t take anyone. So we made our move.”

That doesn't scream well played.

I was surprised that there weren't a slew of trades announced the day after the expansion draft. The longer it played out, the market clearly began to dry up.

Thought Vegas did well to load up on protected assets, but really poorly in this second window. How emelin is still on their roster is a terrible look.

One wonders if McPhee had similar offers from Dallas and Ottawa on the table for Methot, and took the Dallas deal partly for optics reasons. I.e. so Dorion wouldn't be able to crow about how he got the best of him. Dorion has done that sort of thing in the past.

I don't like the Condon, but it is not like Ottawa has any goalie in the system remotely ready for the NHL so I guess it was necessary.

Forebodingly, this is the same rationale I used to justify Hammond's contract.
