I had no idea Brassard's first name was spelled Derick.

If Karlsson goes, i'm done with the franchise until new ownership takes over. I'll be on the Jets broad with Krazy Tea until that time.

Not that believable.

There may be teams willing to do what Vegas did with Brassard. Take the player and then re-trade him to the third team while retaining salary, and receiving one or more valuable pieces in return.

That said, it's a lot easier to commit to retaining salary for a little more than one season (Brassard) instead of more than four seasons (Ryan).

I'm OK with a player exodus until a change in ownership. I'll still be interested in the young players and prospects, but I won't spend any money on the team. Heck, if they strip it down then I expect attendance would be about 10K per game. And who is going to renew season tickets in a soon-to-be-vacated arena in Kanata for a crappy team playing for an unlovable organization with a toxic owner. I wouldn't be surprised if they drop down near 5K in season ticket holders.

Makes you wonder how much the shell of Bryan Murray was holding things together until the end.

Not necessarily as a brilliant hockey manager, but as a people person that most parties liked and respected.

Still can't believe they got that much for brassard and didn't retain any salary. That's a great trade. Also by dealing with the Pens it scares the shit out of other teams to add a guy.

If the market is that strong, trade everyone.

You can't believe they got that much for a top 6 centre? Brassard was the Rangers' #1, Dorion had claimed he was the Sens' true #1 over Turris, and they acquired him for a former 6th overall pick + 2nd. At $3.5M he came at a significant discount, and he's money in the playoffs. Oh, and he's signed for another year, so he's not a true rental. Prospect + 1st was the minimum IMO. I'm not sure Cole will be so easy to flip. Pittsburgh put him on the block a long time ago, and he was never moved.

I don’t think brassard is very good. He’ll be a great fit for Pittsburgh on a deep team.

But a first, second (they’ll get for cole) and a prospect is a ton coming back for a guy that wouldn’t be around in a year anyway.

Half the roster on waivers. Looks like it's the end for karlsson. Not sure if I'm prepared for it. It will look weird when he's wearing another jersey but I'm guessing they've got their offer that they like and it's a lot of players.

This crept up so quickly. Can't think of anything like it, maybe pat roy in MTL. They really kind of have to trade him now it's become such a circus. With neither side talking to the media you know the stakes are real. I just don't see how he can finish the year here. It's such a weird vibe, I'm guessing they know that and are pushing for the trade in the next 36 hours.

Cheering for this franchise has been an emotional roller coaster since the day Karlsson was drafted.

I hope he lands somewhere where some level of stability prevails.

The tempermentally unfit, petulant, maddened king has stomped his foot. The organizational culture has now been shaped in his image, almost appropriate to the Trumpian times.

And its not too hard to paint a picture that all events have been heading to this particular decision point in time for a couple of years now. The timing of contracts, the go ahead and overpay philosophy, the realization of EK's new contract risk at this time in this market, at our current place in the dev cycle, i.e. bottom of the standings. The need to now hit rock bottom to try and rise from the ashes corresponding to the season ticket drive in a few years in a new arena with a hopefully new exciting team is an easy overarching strategy to imagine. That is going to take some branding effort, hope he's got a good pr firm for the complete rebuild that a consistent portion of the fanbase has demanded for years.

I think the Karlsson situation plays out like this:

-Karlsson finishes the season in Ottawa so that Melynk can sell tickets to the Karlsson good bye tour. (otherwise why would anyone buy tickets between now and the end of the year)
-July 1st it leaks to the media it leaks to the media that Karlsson is offered an 8 year, 80 million dollar a year contract
-July 2nd Karlsson quietly tells Melynk to stuff it
-July 3 Karlsson is traded (probably to Tampa Bay)

I do like the Patrick Roy comparable. Both players spent 10 years in their organization before getting sick of it.

I think he’d do well in Vegas. Has a kid now though so not sure how long he can wind it up. Probably have one more divorce, I would guess.

but it’s a good fit with all of their picks that Vegas has. Franchise player to sell to fans and a shoe in to re-sign. Tampa never made much sense because I don’t see how they could sign him. You’re going to get the best haul from a team that thinks they can ink him. Vegas does.

Vegas also traded their 1st to Detroit today, so they are probably out of the Karlsson sweepstakes altogether.
