Gaborik has another 3 years at $4,875,000 per, after this season. Which isn't great, but not extraordinarily terrible either.

Hopefully this doesn't pave the way for a Hoffman trade though.

Well then. Is Gaborik on a retireable contract?

It should be. He signed his current deal in 2014 and he turned 35 in 2017.

Now if we can find a taker for Ryan, then we can sign Johny Tavares...

Really impressed they could move Phaneuf. He seems like a good guy and never once ducked a tough question in Ottawa but his foot speed is an issue today and will be a far greater issue in 2021. I didn’t think they could move him.

A rule for me is that every guy coming back in a trade better skate faster than a guy you’re trading away. This team needs to get faster.

I also believe they will be banking on gaboriks body not holding up. I think they’d be more than happy to have to shut things down sooner the better. He’s missing a lot of time and that could end being a great thing.

I don’t know how any of this contract stuff works, but dorion saying they’re going to get younger a couple days ago is ringing in my ears. They pick up the oldest player in the deal. I don’t believe Eugene will ever stroke a cheque to buy a guy out, but that would be a great ticket this summer, clearing Phaneuf and gaboriks contracts out.

Could Pierre’s PowerPoint presentation in Barbados a couple weeks back have been strong enough to swing Eugene?

I doubt it but it would be smart. Gaborik is an easier buyout.

Now pull a similar trade with bobby Ryan and I’ll be impressed.

Good deal all around. Great for Ottawa to dump the Phaneuf contract. He served his purpose here nicely for awhile, but was garbage this year and had no place in a rebuild. His contract was a real problem. He'll do well in a supporting real in LA. No hard feelings.

Guess this explains the Harpur contract, haha.

I know literally nothing about Shore. Gaborik of course is done. The question is how well done.

Bobby Ryan is not going anywhere though.

You don't think so? If i had to bet i would have said it would be easier to trade Ryan than Phaneuf. He shows glimmers here and there of real skill.

Phaneuf just can't skate.

If Ryan performs in the playoffs like he did last year then they can afford to keep him for their next playoff run.

I wanted the team to trade Phaneuf and keep Ryan. So far so good.

Gaborik is paid less in real dollars than his caphit. Basically Melnyk saves $4.5M over 4 years with this deal. The added bonuses being that Gaborik doesn't need to be protected during Seattle's expansion draft and that he may retire. Though that last one is probably wishful thinking.

One way to see it is that the team got worse once again to save the owner money. Another would be that, when you look at the big picture, and you frame it right, and you hang it in just the right place in your home, it's still a terrible picture. I don't know. The Sens's' defence just got worse, and it was already sneaze-at-able. I'm really curious as to where Ryan and Gaborik start the 2018-19 season, which line, which team, which league.

Melnyk needs to convince a KHL team to sign Gaborik.

Setting aside the primary reason - to save Melnyk money - at least it's easier to bury a forward than a defenceman. Keeping Phaneuf would mean continuing to play him, eating up time on the left side for the next several seasons. He is also more durable than Gaborik, which setting aside the possibility insurance takes the contract at some point, just means less time in the line-up. But yes, we basically dealt Phaneuf for cash savings and late career Milan Michalek.

Of course, we still have four 5-7 calibre d-men on the left side - Oduya, Harpur, Claesson and Boro - leaving Chabot to take on some heavy lifting. But at least this gives more space to Chabot to play, Claesson or Harpur to get comfortable, and maybe even a guy like Wolanin to step in at some point next year.

The thing is 4.5 or so over the next 3 years doesn't really seem like a lot of savings, even in the context of $65 to 70 million payroll. Perhaps in Gaborik is planning on retiring before his contract is up it might be meaningful, but for now its really not. On the upside Gaborik can sit out the rest of this season and maybe be healthy next year, since we're already in next year mode.

Oh yes and our defense going into next year is worse than it was going into this year. It leaves me worried that Dorion is so focused on finding the money for a $10 million a year contract for Karlsson that he forgot to create an environment he will want to play in.

It definitely seems to be selling Phaneuf at lower than value. He does have an NTC though, so Dorion's hands were somewhat tied.

Gaborik looks like a second line forward. If that holds up then I like the move, regardless of salary. But that's irrelevant unless the Sens add a solid left D. Basically, I want 2013-14 Methot. Having something close to that is much more important than having Zack Smith and $2M in budget space.

I'd say the playoffs depend on how the Sens straighten out the defence over the summer. Not very confident.
