Summer Recess 2: The Search for Curly's Gold

Post #1 by senate » Tue May 01, 2018 2:54 pm

The offseason is starting off with a bang:

So I guess Dorion spent the last month criticizing Boucher in the press just for the fun of it. I wonder if the decision came down to budget or if Dorion was hoping for a specific coach to be fired after round one.

Some bright news, at least, from Garrioch's Sun article:

Dorion’s expectation is that Boucher will implement the use of the young players and the team will practice more.

Ville Pokka, the centerpiece to the controversial Chris DiDomenico deal that caused the Bytown Boozer to quit this board in disgust, has jumped ship to the KHL.

I trust Dorion with the draft, what I don't trust him with is the trades. He'll get a decent player, and he's always killing it with his second round picks.

I like the Brassard deal, and I like that he goes after guys he wants, but yeah, he always seems to go a 2nd rounder or first round prospect too far.

In terms of the draft, I like that he gets a high percentage of NHLers with his picks, but I could use a homerun swing pick now and again. But I fully expect to see Tkachuk called at No. 4 this year, and while he may round into a nice middle 6 guy with character, he's not what this team needs.

The Sens don't have a 2nd round pick this year

Where does one even find a Murder She Wrote gif? I know the interweb is full of abject alcoves and forlorn recesses, but I think I will never fully realize just how forsaken and desolate it can get.

Amazingly, he was actually right. Jimmy Blixt and Justin Murray were removed from the staff page on the Senators website today.

The smallest hockey ops in the NHL gets smaller, just like Melnyk and Dorion promised it would at the town halls.

Just follow the Central Scouting rankings and take the next best player available. Who needs to pay for scouting when someone does it already?

He sorta seemed like a legitimate nhler, so that’s something.

In other news Eric Gryba seems destined for a depth role on the oilers farm team.

Our assistant GM, on the eve of watching and interviewing dozens of 17 year olds, is arrested for sexual harassment of a 19 year old male. Good riddance anyway, assuming he goes.

Big picture, the uphill battle on public relations just got steeper.

It was an accusation that Lee was masturbating (or at least touching himself). I guess Yost deleted it because it was part of the facts alleged by Erie District Attorney in his TSN interview.

In non-inappropriate-sexual-behavior news (fingers crossed it stays that way in hindsight), Hughes and Zadina are among the prospects with interviews in Ottawa next week.

If the allegations are true, especially if the rumours Yost is peddling have any basis, it's reasonable to wonder if this isn't the first time he did something along these lines, but rather the first time he got caught. Which is frankly a scary thought considering he's been a key part of our prospect development for like 20 years, and makes you really wonder about the culture within the organization.

On the other hand, it's a good reminder of how sexual harassment can be tricky to prove and open to interpretation. It's not hard to envision an explanation where this was just Randy being an asshole for one reason or another, talking about his dick as ego-centric males sometimes do. It's also important to note this isn't a workplace incident where accountability and abuse of authority would come into consideration regardless of intent. For that reason, it may be hard to fire him immediately.

Regardless though, you have to suspend the guy immediately. The optics of this are brutal for an organization already struggling with public relations. Let's hope this new COO has some basic experience with crisis management. That doesn't seem to be in Melnyk's DNA, and I'm not convinced Dorion would understand the concept. Not having a statement up on the website or on twitter is not a good start.

It is really odd that the Senators haven't publicly suspended Lee or otherwise had him step away from the team until the organization can investigate what happens. But I guess, the Senators can afford neither the PR person to announce that nor the HR person to investigate it.

Garrioch's combine article: http://ottawasun.com/sports/hockey/nhl/ottawa-senators/senators-getting-ready-for-follow-up-looks-at-top-nhl-draft-prospects

The tl;dr: Ottawa interviewed 77 players at the combine. Chief scout Trent Mann says that eight prospects are coming to Ottawa for meetings next week. Mann only confirmed Zadina, but said no one else on the list would be a surprise. Garrioch says that Tkachuk and Boqvist would be there too and speculated that Hughes and Bouchard will be as well.

Speaking of Boqvist, he told reporters that he had two interviews with Ottawa during the combine.
