Chris Dreidger and Nick Moutrey, whoever the hell that is, were also not qualified.

Nick Paul was qualified. The Senators will win that Spezza trade yet!

Yeah it's not my preference to rush them either, I was simply trying to point out that even if the team wanted to rush them it would be hard to do on account of all the contracts they have and not having the option to tank the season. The best they could do would be to rush them in after the deadline.

If you rush them you can play a team on entry level contracts. Not going to win anyway amirite?

The only way Melnyk can take financial advantage of this is if the Sens don't reach the cap floor. Otherwise, he saves $800K on the contract over 2 years, but he has to pay McCormick $1.3M over that time to take his spot as the 13th forward.

For a guy who needs to make every dollar count, Melnyk isn't very good with his money.

EDIT: Nevermind, he saves $800K per year... still, that's only about $150K saved per year over McCormick.

Issuing a press release about refinancing your debt (or maybe just a part of it?) seems weird.

Senators fans are lucky. Imagine having to go through the tedium of Tavares sweepstakes. Instead, we get the excitement of learning about a big new loan which the team can use to pay for some of their big old loans. That's what being a hockey fan is all about. That and watching Gary Bettman being accepted into the Hall.

We should be trying to attract fresh blood to the boards and everyone knows that urban youth culture is all about two things right now: Fortnite and syndicates of financial institutions.

Speaking on the basis on anonymity, a well-placed source with direct knowledge of the situation has confirmed to TFP that Senators owner Eugene Melnyk has engaged in negotiations to sell the franchise.

According to the league-source, Melnyk has received one offer for the organization and that “offer had been considered.”

During last week’s Board of Governors meeting in Las Vegas, while not officially on the agenda, league owners discussed the $135 million refinancing loan the Senators announced they finalized on Wednesday and also discussed the offer pitched for the club.

The offer is believed to have been rejected, but word is negotiations are ongoing and Melynk is exploring options.

NHL Deputy Commissioner Bill Daly acknowledged this report when contacted via email early Thursday morning, and wanted to temper the subject by stating that he doesn’t “equate an offer to purchase the Sens (and reporting that offer to the board) with an intention or desire to sell the team. The two are very different in my mind.”

As per the Senators’ press release yesterday, the team’s newly acquired loan was “financing of a six-year senior term debt with a syndicate of financial institutions.”

It’s not yet been confirmed, but there is strong belief the interested party in the franchise is, or includes, Cirque du Soleil co-founder Guy Laliberte, who has a net worth of $1.37 billion and has expressed interest in the Senators in the past. It’s also believed Laliberte may have played a role in the Senators securing their latest $135M loan.

It doesn't quite add up, but there's something there if you're drawing a proper, qualified response from Daly.

It seems to me that someone leaked this story to Pagnotta to counter the Senators press release from yesterday. Now if only we knew what was the intended audience and goal of that press release.

No press release and not a comment Melnyk. Does that mean something? No, probably not.

Also, the franchise crowing again about refinancing some debt is still weird.

It seems the team is saying "We aren't insolvent, people will still lend us money!" Odd thing to go to the press with.

Also there are a bunch of Cirque du Soleil trucks at the CTC. Coincidence? Yes because they are performing here. :Mulder:

Chris Stevenson, who apparently writes for the Athletic now, says that the Senators have $100 million in debt in addition to the $135 million that was refinanced this week. Which means that the Senators total debt is $235 million.

That's note quite as bad as I thought.

Also am I missing something - why are so many deals being pre-signed? I thought that was against CBA rules?

You can negotiate and agree in principle to a contract before noon on July 1st, you just can't sign it.

How much will his share of the next expansion or relocation fee be? The value of his franchise is still at least double the debt no?

Well it's a 20,000 seat arena and it's currently occupied by a single man at his desk, because I doubt Melnyk came in on a Sunday. And that runs down the whereabouts of the entire Sens front office at the moment. If Dorion signs Rieder he'll be left high-fiveless, and I'm not sure he's ready to cope with that.
