Because Melnyk couldn't get Gary Roberts.

Ricard_Persson wrote:It's going to be tough to watch this year. The battle against fans and owner and add in a lowest look of a team in years. Maybe 25 years.

Attendance is going to be bad and no one is going to win. Ottawa is a tough market. Their fans always have a card full of excuses that they are happy to use, and this year there is many. It's going to look bad on paper when the rest of the league sees the numbers and we'll go through the relocation talk as usual from those on the outside which will be meant by stiff correction from the die-hards that won't buy tickets but will defend the team.

This will get ugly. Melnyk must see it that he is in this market and there are better markets elsewhere, but he'll never be allowed to get there. It would kind of suck if you weren't from the area when you think of it.

He's a billionaire, and I do think he's part stupid, but he can't be THAT stupid so he must have a game plan. Does he really want to own this team forever under these circumstances? He is not going broke, and he doesn't have to sell the team from a financial point of view so we can forget all of that rumour going around for the last two years. Him owning this team is the equivalent of us buying a used snowmobile. It's not a life or death cost. It's a toy.

So if I were him and he may very well be planning this. I'd sell as soon as the Lebreton deal is done. The franchise won't be worth more for a long time. He'll get out before all the problems arise from the development, which will be a nightmare in itself. And basically I think once the glow wears off the new rink and new owner, the attendance will drop back down to average at best.

What about the world today suggests billionaires cant be incredibly stupid?

Dorion and whoever the fuck the new COO is did an interview on CBC radio this morning. Some highlights:

- they plan to trade Karlsson was formulated after July 1st. You misunderstood when Pierre Dorion said February
- the return for Karlsson was good because it is better than him leaving as a UFA
- Mark Stone really wants to sign a 8 year deal in Ottawa, he was close to signing one in the summer
- the Senators internal polling shows that 75% of fans support the organization and "are confident with the direction of the team"
- most of angry fans are angry because they don't accept the need for a rebuild
- the Senators have the largest pool of talented prospects in the history of the franchise
- people are reacting to the Karlsson trade the same way they did to the Burrows trade: Per Dorion, “Yesterday I walked the concourse at fanfest, not one person was mad at me. I shook every hand. A few people said ‘we’re a bit disappointed Karlsson’s gone’ but a person said ‘we have faith in what you guys are doing.'”

The photo is perfect for that interview transcript.

And then CBC ran a poll asking fans if they were confident in the Sens direction. After about 10,000 votes on twitter, 92% are not confident. Bluff called.

Dorion doesn't understand that for a lie to work it has to believable. It is almost endearing.

Even if were true, what's his argument here? The team excuses his ineffectiveness because he plays hurt? If he wasn't hurt, he'd be more effective? We don't have the depth to let his injuries heal? His positioning is so poor he's exceptionally prone to collisions?

In all seriousness, I'm concerned we're going to mess up Chabot like we did Ceci. Ceci didn't need to be so bad, but forcing him to carry the second pair too soon impeded his development, and as a result he's neither very good offensively or defensively. Chabot's offensive skills are already more advanced, but I'd be more comfortable if we sheltered his minutes a bit, as Boucher did last year. But Chabot is probably the only top four defenceman we have right now, so sheltering his minutes for the sake of development is not a luxury we have, assuming of course we have some desire to win (in the absence of any incentive not to).

Im the biggest Volch fanboy alive so maybe I am biased but he was close to death during his tenure with the Devils. I've never seen such absorbed abuse from pucks to the jaw and just get up like nothing happened with blood pouring out of his mouth. That dude will always have my respect. Defended him every season fiercely too.

I see you were being sarcastic tho. :smuglanne:

I miss ya Volch. I met him once and even though he couldn't speak much English, I pointed to his head and said "rock" and he laughed, signed my photo and went on his way.

Lol, of course I get a nervous breakdown reminiscing on a player who hasn't been around in years in a thread about Karlsson traded and I sound more depressed (for other reasons) than ya'll.

Karlsson hadn't spoken with Melnyk or Dorion since November when he was asked for his trade list.

We are a team!

Will be interesting to see if any local media actually works for some stories soon. It's a shame all of the good stories about the Senaturds come from writers in other NHL cities.

We've got Garrioch doing is Sens PR columns that are almost written by the team, and Don Brennan who really become a fierce writer against the team last year has turned around to go the other way this year. I think he truly tries to go against the popular opinion to rile people up. He hammered on the team last year, and when Karlsson is traded for spare parts I went to find his next article and he writes that the deal could end up being great for Ottawa.

I truly believe he just likes to fire people up by going with the opposite opinion on everything.

How no one in the media has given any insight into how this happened is baffling. There has to be so many leaks in the team that info can be found rather easily if you have an inside line on it.

I like how the Senators invited "influencers" (ie bloggers and tweeters) to attend a preseason game in the press box and now they have nothing but optimistic things to say about the rebuild.

Hard to withstand the allure of getting to be in the same space that bruce garrioch typically occupies...

The 6th Sens didn't sound too optimistic on TSN 1200 last week.

And in other Don Brennan news... I'll leave this here.

As an added bonus, we can't even waive Zack Smith without this turning into a side show.

Who the hell does Karlsson think he is to demand that? Dorion only gives NTCs to elite game breakers like Nate Thompson.

Scanlan tweeted, and then for some reason deleted, that according to his source, the biggest deal breaker for the Karlsson camp was Ottawa's refusal to give a NTC.
