Freddy was mad post game. Shall we all speculate who he's suggesting "doesn't want to play for the team"?

I think Gards is one. I think Bozie might be another; seems to be just going through the motions.

Body language.

Atrocious. The goals for is really ugly. No surprise that only Freddy has been the lone bright spot

Mirtle has an article where he says that JvR would have been willing to take a deal like Eberle's earlier in the year and that there have been no negotiations on a new contract for him so far. Seems like he's not coming back.

I'm mostly okay with that. I hope the team has plans for using that cap space though, because cap space for cap spaces sake is dumb. If he's not coming back, and you're not re-signing him I'd hope that they'd look to move him, ideally for a defender or assets that could be put towards getting us a defender.

My question about JvR is how much of his production is him and how much is a product of his circumstance—cushy minutes 5v5 and loads of PP time where the primary play seems to be geared towards giving him extremely high danger chances. Don't get me wrong, JvR is incredibly talented and has amazing hands in tight, but I'm not sure that replacing him with Leivo on the PP or Kapanen 5v5 would result in a dramatic fall in production because of the tactics used. It's an open question for me.

I get there are ebbs and flows with scoring, but a team with this much firepower should not be 27th in scoring over ~7 weeks. It's frustrating. Obviously Babcock is a good coach, but his usage is getting incredibly frustrating.

Poor Marner. If you actually restricted his minutes and dumped Leo to the 4th line, he and Martin could raise some hell playing 6-8 minutes a night. Instead, you waste an offensive talent in Marner with 4th liners, and attach an anchor to Kadri and Marleau.

I am mystified that the Kadri line continues to struggle and yet no changes are made there. I know that the line is on a shooting percentage bender right now (and not in the good way) but they aren't generating shots or chances like last year either. Something has to change on that line.

If Mo is out, commence the auction—it's evaluation time.

Marner is being punished for playing a huge part in the OT goal against STL and the first two goals against PHI. Seems fair to me. If his head isn't in the game he shouldn't expect to play.

Time for someone to answer the bell. Gardiner would have heard it from Freddy for sure. I wouldn't be suprised to see his best game tomorrow.

I'd like to see Dermott play 20. Give him PP time.

I 100% agree that a change needs to be made on that line. Specifically Komarov.
That said, Kadri has been around his averages of last year in terms of shots. Slightly lower, but nothing glaringly worse by comparison.
Overall he's been 'ok' despite the barren wasteland of points.

2016/17: 2.9 shots/g 13.6 s%
2017/18: 2.5 shots/g 12.4 s%

This years stats are being taken during what is one of the teams worst offensive production periods. So, grain of salt.

Based on Elliott Friedman writing that Karlsson may or may not want to stay in Ottawa.

1st 2nd Kappanen Bracco?

Edit: Throw in Bozak and they can flip him for picks too.

No point trading for him. This isn't our year.

Would prefer selling off assets, if anything. Bring some kids up and get a taste of playoffs.

Sign JT in the summer

How close would we be with him and a good D rental?

Take a good run this year. Sign JT to long term deal. Bridge Marner and Nylander.

Pros to trading for him. Extra year on term, advantage in negotiations, and makes us a shit tonne better this year.

Why?

Assets?

If the Leafs are going to let Bozak and JVR walk. They should be flipping them for assets and trading them to the Islanders. Or add them to a deal for JT and they flip them. Maybe they'll take the face puncher back.

We'd be better with JT + whoever, over the other two. Even its just for a couple months.

Matthews and Matthews-lite on the same team would be like Whoa.

I'm down for flipping assets and seeing what we've got in some Marlies. Hell, even down if we flip Bozak and JvR and Leo and then use those assets to add a D (the only thing we can't really replace internally).

Hyman - Matthews - Marner
Brown - Kadri - Johnsson
Kapanen/Leivo - Nylander - Marleau
Kapanen/Leivo - Aaltonen - Soshnikov
Martin

The Nylander line gets the cushy minutes afforded to the Bozak line and we can see what Marleau can do in an offensive role. Kadri gets put with two guys that can navigate both sides of the puck in Johnsson and Brown. Fourth line is a nice blend of skill, grit, and speed comprised of guys Babs likes.

Forwards who can PK are Johnsson, Kapanen, Soshnikov, Marleau, Brown, Hyman. I'm not sure if Aaltonen PKs with the Marlies, but there is a distinct lack of centres there. I wouldn't mind seeing Matthews PK tbh.

I don't think there is ever a wrong time to go after JT, but if you think you can snag him in FA it makes more sense to wait and make a play then. Besides, I don't see any way that the Isles move him before the deadline, maybe before the draft if it becomes clear he will test the market.

Rielly to the IR.
Valiev recalled.

I don't think it's serious. Otherwise they would have recalled someone potentially more impactful or someone that would actually get into a game.

Maybe that's because you're switching to him any time there's an ozone faceoff just to protect the team and shield weaknesses.
I haven't payed enough attention this year with regards to which players he's sending out in which zones, but it was something that was common last year.

We have very different definitions of the word, "earned". Also he is a 4th line C, that is one of the most interchangeable roster positions on the team.

I'd be interested to see what the Goat would do if paired with Sosh and Leivo/Kapanen on the fourth line but I think it's likely that Aaltonen would be a better choice. An offensively capable fourth line could be a huge asset for this team since they would get cushy minutes against less capable fourth line. Those guys don't seem to be terrible in their own zone either.

In the lineup that I posted there's plenty of forwards who can PK. As for the point about him beating out Moore, Babs didn't seem to like Moore very much from the get go. Babs also seemed to take a liking to Aaltonen. I wouldn't be surprised if after a handful more games Guathier gets sent back down and Aaltonen gets called up for an audition.

Oh ok. Didn't realize Babcock just handed out ice time to anybody who showed up in the locker room. Neat.
