That is what I have been saying, I dont understand why people think this is some shrewd move by Johnsson and his agent. Barring injury he isnt getting top 6 ice time or top pp minutes and it is conceivable that he could be on the 4th line. If I were him I would have signed a 2 year deal at a higher AAV in the hopes that in 2020 I could build a strong case for a lucrative deal when the Leafs have to play him higher up the lineup due to cap constraints.

Interesting. If he signs I wonder if that puts pressure on Marner to work out his deal this summer instead of next. Marner has the most to gain by waiting another year though.

Matthews seems like a lock to get 11M, it's more than Eichel, less than McDavid and the same as Tavares.

Yeah, I think 10.5-11 is a pretty safe bet. Don't think he really deserves any more than that anyways.

Honestly, if Chiarelli wasn't such a retard, these guys wouldn't be getting that much. He single handedly fucked RFA contracts by giving Draisaitl and McDavid that kind of money....then Botterill followed with the Eichel deal. Ideally, McDavid should've gotten something in the 11 range, Draisaitl in the 7 range, Eichel between 8-9 and Matthews between 9-10.

As I understand it he was slated to get 13 and then decided the optics of that number would be bad PR.

We're getting into PTO season. Mark Letestu just signed one with Florida. One thing Dubas always did with the Marlies was bring a shit load of players to camp on tryouts. I think there was something like 10+ tryouts at camp last year.

I wouldn't mind seeing guys like Daniel Winnik, Jannik Hansen, and Joel Ward get a chance to come into camp and earn a job.

Most of all, Nick Shore would be a good guy to bring in to compete for the fourth line centre spot. His defensive stats are excellent and Drew Doughty said this about him a few years ago: http://mayorsmanor.com/2015/12/is-nick- ... e-centers/

I predict Hughson comes across as a Leafs fan by November 1, if they’re playing as good as we hope.

He's better than Romanuk but still I find it hilarious that the Leafs are the only team who are not allowed to have a passionate homer for regional broadcasts. TSN games are a godsend these days.

It's fucking regional broadcasts, why not go with Bonesie? What a god damned travesty. I get not having a homer for national broadcasts, sure. A regional game on a wednesday? Give us someone who is equally angry about officiating as the fans, and pleeeeeeaaase give us someone who doesn't spend 70% of a game constantly gushing over the other teams players!

Speaking of that. Where were you when you found out the team signed John Tavares?

AM: I was at home. Actually, I was sleeping and Dubas called me and kind of woke me up. I got up and I was trying to make it seem like I’d been up for like three hours (laughs). He just called me and told me we signed John and obviously I was ecstatic. I honestly couldn’t believe it. I didn’t know what was going on, what was going to happen. I knew they were happy about the presentation to him (during the interview period) and everything. Once they signed him and they said they were going to announce it in a couple hours I was ecstatic. I called my Dad. I think the whole city of Toronto pretty much erupted. Pretty special.

Did you see the — and I will editorialize here and say that they were stupid — stories that Auston was upset (about adding Tavares)? Do you see any of that stuff?

AM: I did, yeah.

Were you like, ‘Why would I be upset?’

AM: That’s exactly how I responded. I couldn’t believe it. I guess you’ve got to have a story in the summer and that was their story they decided to go with. But I definitely wasn’t upset at all. It was pretty much exactly the opposite. I’m so happy. I called him beforehand and you don’t want to be an annoyance because you probably figure everybody’s calling him. I think the big thing for me was just letting him know I wanted him here — everybody wants him here. He knows what it’s all about – he’s from Toronto. I don’t think you need to really sell him too much on the team we had because we have a lot of good parts and good players and we add him and you take that to another level.

Oh man, it sounds like Matthews really doesn't want to play with Tavares.

The imagined potential Matthews/Tavares beef perfectly illustrates how little so many reporters actually know about hockey.

Have they never heard of Gretzky/Messier, Lemieux/Francis, Sakic/Forsberg, Yzerman/Fedorov, Modano/Nieuwendyk, Crosby/Malkin, etc.? The concept of a centreman being unhappy to play on a team with another elite centreman has never existed in hockey and it's absolutely absurd.

I always thought the 01/02 Leafs were the team that had the best chance during the Quinn era. Lindros scored 73 points that year in his first season with the Rangers.

https://www.cbc.ca/sports/hockey/leafs- ... k-1.269768

Sources claim the Flyers want Nik Antropov, either Tomas Kaberle or Danny Markov and a first or second-round draft pick.

Imagine getting Lindros and keeping Kaberle. Trading Markov would mean that they wouldn't have traded him for Reichel and Green. Dougie was a free agent that summer and didn't sign with Montreal until October.

Hoglund - Sundin - Mogilny
Roberts - Lindros - Tucker
Corson - Gilmour - Renberg
Valk - McCauley - Domi

Kaberle - McCabe
Lumme - Yushkevich
Berg - Pilar

Easy to forget that Andrew Nielsen is still only 21, despite having played 163 games in the AHL. This is his 4th rookie tournament.

Weird that Engvall isn't there.

Marlies are going to have another solid team, particularly on defense:

Grundstrom - Mueller - Timashov
Engvall - Lindholm/Jooris - Bracco
Marchment - Brooks - Moore
Piccinich/Ferguson/someone else? - Gauthier - Cracknell

Borgman - Liljegren
Marincin - Subban
Rosen - LoVerde
Nielsen - Lindgren

Question: Durzi can play in the AHL, correct?

That's a shit load of high quality AHL defence.

Have to think something has got to give. Even if its just an AHL move. There's limited room for advancement on D. Especially with guys like Gordeev and Rassanen a year away.

Gordeev is interesting. I remember him standing out in a game a few years back for Hamilton, and i posted about him in the draft thread that year. He was 16 at the time I think. Got traded to Flint and hasn't out up great numbers. Hard to judge him on that though, what a fucking shit show team.

that AHL defense also doesn't include Ozighanov. Although if he's in the AHL, one of those 8 is in the NHL.

we might see Lindgren in the ECHL to start, despite being a decent prospect.

I know it's important to have vets, but getting rid of Marincin and LoVerde wouldn't keep me up at night.

Jesus Fuck I cannot wait for hockey to get going. I am 39 and I have NEVER been this excited for game 1. Matthews, Marner, and John Fucking TAVARES. A top 10 player finally came here. I still can’t believe it.

I feel like a kid at Christmas!!

Marinicin and Lo Verde are both waiver eligible. Holl should be as well.
