I don’t hate Sparks, just hate that he deflated the team a lot of the time and lost us points in the standings. Shooting his mouth off as a rookie during a bad spell was a dumb thing to do, but not unforgivable if I had faith in his game. I’m with claw, you just want your backup to be good. Solid. No fuss or muss. Nothing spectacular but no softies. It’s just about giving the team confidence that they can just play their game on a February Tuesday night without thinking too much.

Sparks got the backup job last year even though he was the worst goalie in camp:

Andersen: 4 GP, 199:52 MIN, 94 SV, 101 SA, .931 SV%

McElhinney: 3 GP, 119:27 MIN, 64 SA, 70 SV, .914 SV%

Sparks: 3 GP, 120:33 MIN, 62 SV, 70 SA, .886 SV%

Pickard: 2 GP, 40:00 MIN, 19 SV, 20 SA, .950 SV%

Go blame someone else for your problems, loser.

What he’s saying is probably taken totally out of context in the interest of likes and shares.

I bet he’s just explaining he sort of blew his chances in Toronto, and is looking forward to a fresh start and opportunity.

I think he Leafs picked the guy least likely to clear waivers and hoped 1 or both the other guys would be the backup plan. They kept the homegrown guy.

Then Picksrd and McGillany were picked up on waivers and there was a big problem.

Problem was that the Leafs saved most of their worst performances for when Sparks was in net.

The wording is suspect though. If he says 'All I want is a fair opportunity' then that's okay cause he's referring to the upcoming year and he probably has a better chance in Vegas. But the fact that he used past tense with 'All I've wanted' seems to imply that he feels like he didn't have a fair shot in his time here.

Even Shilton kinda blasted him on Twitter and she's usually very neutral when discussing players and avoids outright criticism, sticking to facts instead. I think Sparks rubbed a lot of people the wrong way.

Perhaps. He did call out his team once didn’t he?

Either way glad he’s gone and I’m not the least bit surprised the Leafs torpedoed his ECHL-quality ass.

Funny enough, Mike Babcock was the hockey coach that the coaches brought up the most as an example on how to do things. I can’t say whether it was pandering to the Toronto crowd or not, but it was interesting and the examples were generally things Babcock is known to do (bringing guys high, possibly out of the zone on the half wall of the PP, picks and bumps down low, etc.).

These dopes should go on Leafs Twitter if they want the REAL truth about Babcock.

Listen up, dorks. Marner and the Leafs have agreed on a number. It's north of 10. Both sides are now working on term. Two, five and eight are on the table. Dunno how long it drags, or if it ends up happening. But the number is agreed to.

It's curious they would agree on a salary with such wildly different term lengths. 2/20 is vastly different then 8/80. Almost like nothing has really been agreed to.

You can believe what you want. But I'm not one to make up stuff. The Marner camp wants two so that when the cap increases they can sign for more. Toronto really doesn't want five cause then Mathews and Marner become free at the same time. The money is agreed to, the term is not. That's all I know.

Him and Sakic are both hiding behind their human shield Mitch Marner.

It's weird that there's basically zero talk from the media about offer sheets going out to Rantanen, Laine, Point, Tkachuk, Conner, Boeser, McAvoy, Provorov, Werenski, and several more RFAs.

Wait, no it's not.

There's been lots of talk about Laine and Point getting offers. The rest, not much.

I wouldn’t risk the overpayment you’d have to make to successfully offer sheet Laine. Too much evidence his problem is (potentially incurable) fuckheadedness.

Love reading people analysing the relationship between Sakic and Rantanen through some weird narcissistic Toronto lense. Apparently the reason Sakic hasn’t tabled a formal contract to Rantanen must be because he’s waiting on Marner to set the market. Obviously the whole league revolves around Dubas.

Guys. Take care of yourselves. Hope you’re both upright and pointed forward. Get the support you need. Help is usually out there if we’re brave enough to ask.

I browse the chat sites and the hockey news once or twice a week to see if I’ve missed anything. But the chat is awful and hardly worth reading. Marner is the worst, Babs is worster blah blah...

I hope you're doing alright, PT.

I've been keeping an eye on threads here but it's been quiet and things have been busy at work.

On the Marner front, the last I had heard, Chris Johnston doesn't think that there's a huge gap between Marner's camp and the Leafs and it sounds like it's coming down to the term. Fingers crossed.

It felt like they’d settled on a rough number when they made all those moves (e.g. Clarkson) to leave breathing room. I think it’s pretty obvious that the agents of the big RFAs are openly or tacitly in cahoots to wait it out and see if some GM gets desperate. No one wants to go first and set the market. When training camp is looming, some guys will start to crack.

That would be my guess as well.

I'm not a cap expert by any means but if I've been interpreting it correctly, I do like how Dubas set things up with the Clarkson move and LTIR so that whatever's available at the start of the regular season (~$10.5 per) is the absolute max the Leafs can offer to Mitch based on cap room and after that, the clock starts ticking and the amount available to him keeps dropping. After that, it's mainly a matter of term and the options there appear to be either 3 years or 6+.

I've seeked help. I'm privileged enough that I get same day appointments at my doctors, and I was bumped up to the top of cancellation list for the shrink. (Yes I'm sure strings were pulled.)

My brain was going a thousand miles an hour, it was intense. Didn't need sleep, well a couple hours and I was good to go.

Wishing you well, PT. We all need to take a step back from time to time, no shame in getting help like Rage said. Saw a therapist for a year myself starting in 2018 to finally deal with anxiety and other issues and it helped me immensely. I'd still be doing sessions if he hadn't moved away out West, though I still plan on doing more sessions in the future with another therapist.

And yeah, as far as the Leafs go I haven't given such few fucks in an off-season in probably ever? These last playoffs really soured me on the league and I've started to see more and more how poor the NHL product is when compared to the NBA. Also hard to watch a team of listless pussies especially when the one guy with some nuts was traded away.

I browse the chat sites and the hockey news once or twice a week to see if I’ve missed anything. But the chat is awful and hardly worth reading. Marner is the worst, Babs is worster blah blah...

Once you stop sleeping it's all over. I went about a couple of weeks (and drinking 12-16 cups of coffee a day) with barely any sleep before someone else's road rage almost turned really bleak. Thankfully he was too big of a chickenshit gangster to call the cops.

I use tm to sleep or just calm down, super easy to start and it works so goddamned well for me I'm still in doubt over it.

Wish you all the best PT. After my injury from a few years ago, I still deal with symptoms from a tbi (tramatic brain injury). Thankfully enough it's much better now, back at work grinding away, but I still deal with the highs and lows. I get to talk to a neuro-psychologist as well as an occupational therapist occasionally. No drugs, no supplements. Just alot of day to day stuff I make sure I'm committed to. Feel free to PM me at any time, maybe I can extend an olive branch with my experiences.

As for the subject matter at hand, who the fuck knows lol. Players and their general managers are all on vacation. I assume talks will start to heat up when camp starts and the hockey wheels get turnin. At this point I don't care what Mitch gets. Just have him suited up for game 1 and I'm good.
