Do they come with a first round pick?

The 'lers seemingly always wind up with a high 1st rounder.

Better option: buy oil stocks and trade Melnyk for the Snes picks in the upcoming draft and take on his remaining invalid McDonald's gift cards as a dump.

Melnyk has the most predictable and durable value of those.

Yup. U.S. deaths officially at over 55k. Probably at least 75k right now given those who died without being tested. https://www.ft.com/content/6bd88b7d-338 ... 5c6fac846c

Still here and still waiting for news regarding when we'll be able to see NHLers lace 'em up again.

I didn't know Kappy was abroad and I just assumed he was staying put here. Are we sure he wasn't inspired by "You Don't Mess with the Zohan" to take up hairdressing in the interim?

My proposal is this:

18 playoff teams, with three pods of 6.
Round Robin tournament with the top 2 teams from each pod make the final pod of 6 teams
A round robin tournament picks the top 4, with best of 7 semi-final and best of 7 Stanley cup final.

Pods are in Edmonton, Toronto and Vancouver

All players wear masks and full face shields.
All games played 3 on 3 with a roster of 7 forwards, 3 defenceman and 2 goalies but the backup goalie is not on the bench, and only 1 coach is allowed on the bench. Teams can carry an unlimited roster and interchange line-ups.

Games are 2-20 minute periods or 3 15 minute periods.

The problems with regular games is benches, face offs and close contact. 3:3 increases space on benches, way less face offs which is also when scrums happen.

The teams would really just need to all be tested clean, then sequestered in a single location for the remainder of the season or whatever it is. They don’t need to play with masks.

They’d have to be tested daily - also I wonder how many players would show that they’ve already had it.

MLB did a big round of antibody testing, which covered players, staff and families. It showed 0.7% of people had it and the tests have a 0.5% false positive rate.

That's a shockingly low rate, to be honest.

I don't know if baseball is an anomaly. This is completely me pulling it out of my ass, but baseball players would have been preparing for spring training when all this stuff started and probably limited their contact to outside people by focusing on getting ready for the season.

Agreed - players would basically need to be tested prior to games.

Conceivably before they were in a dressing room type environment with their own teammates.

If they’re all sequestered and there’s no public contact, the risk of infection would have to be very low. It’s not like the virus has magical wings or anything.

Again - theyll figure something out. There’s too much money at stake not to.

From a medical journal research that my friend sent to me. He's been very scared of this for a while, so for him to be a little encouraged is nice.

Pleased to announce we opened our doors today with a new normal and we had business. People came in saying they want to support local businesses and that was so nice. These last two months have been agony, I'm hoping it'll end up being better. With the malls closed, we have a chance. I'm just relieved. The wage subsidy is going to be a massive help as well.

The NFP I work for might close except for the wage subsidy. Also trying to tickle people’s heart strings with a fundraising campaign. Anyone want to donate?

Testing is down, numbers are up and there are too many cunts that are just treating this as if we're okay now. A little bit of good weather and people turn into absolute fucking mongrels. March and April were for fucking nothing.

It's worked literally everywhere except America so far. Heck, it's really worked there too, just maybe not as well as it did in Europe.

In other news, we set a new global high for new daily cases. The numbers out of Brazil, especially when you consider their limited testing numbers, are bonkers. We can only imagine what huge chunks of Africa are like where testing is non-existant.

Lots of luck involved in all of this. In BC we had one of the 1st cases, and first deaths, we did not shut much down (salons, massage, PT and dine in restaurants). We have had one case on our island in like a week, we have one active case with a population near 800 000 and that person is in hospital.

I am lucky to live on an island with low population density.

I'll watch, I'll get excited if my team upsets anyone, but I feel bad for the way all sports will be starting around the same time and freeze out the smaller players. I like knowing when hockey ends, the CFL starts, baseball being constant, then the NFL starting. For all of the buy local phonies you'll find all over social media, the CFL will probably be an example of a local victim who can't deal with larger competition.

It’s almost June and there is no plan and players haven’t been on skates for months and keeping 500 players and far more support staff isolated looks to be a large endeavour.

Bettman doesn’t want two Cups unawarded during his tenure but he is running out of time.

It's still only May and they've got a basic framework sorted out and are working on the logistics. Fans would like to see hockey again, and if it can be done safely then Bettman is doing everything he can to make it happen. Thankfully they aren't just throwing their hands up and walking away.

I'm so negative about all the negativity surrounding this. They gotta at least try something. Good for them.

I’d imagine there are 2 factors in place:

Their business interruption insurance requires them to put in some effort and they NEED governments to say No.

Their playoff TV revenue would go a long way to saving their financial ass, for owners but more so for players.

Personally, I’m hopeful for a playoff final, but I’m skeptical it’s will happen.

It's not going to be easy and obviously a lot hinges on what the governments allow (although America doesn't really seem to give a fuck and wants to pretend like this pandemic isn't a thing apparently), but I am actually impressed with the NHL for once. Normally, they are behind the other leagues in taking action or being progressive, but Bettman has actually laid out a pretty solid plan IMO with a clear overview of how it would all take place, he just needs the green light. NBA and MLB are still spinning their wheels comparatively.

The NBA has a plan to play in Orlando which may or may not happen. Location is the big question for the NHL also, where there are the fewest restrictions there is also the larger risk.
