So apparently the Leafs are looking to sign Mason Marchment to an ELC. Not a bad move, he's played well this year and has some cunt in his game. Pierre Engvall is also having a good year in Sweden, comparable to Andreas Johnsson at the same age. 6'3 and skates well. Wonder if he comes over next year.

Marchment was drawing some serious praise before his injury earlier this season. He's an intruiging player, the staff spent a lot of time with him working on skills and training before he got into games.

I forgot about Engvall entirely.

I'm hoping Johnsson gets a look as one of our call-ups, but I get the feeling they're keeping him in the AHL to help the Marlies keep winning. He's their biggest threat right now. I think I read they planned to do a paper transaction with Dermott and Kapanen that would make them two of the call-ups but would keep them eligible. I wonder if Borgman might be another for D depth going into the playoffs.

Leafs, Raptors and Marlies are all going on long runs. Marlies will have to do it without a couple young studs.

Big opportunities for some Marlies to grab at those big minutes. Here's hoping that Brooks can start lighting it up.

Mason Marchment officially gets his ELC (son of Bryan Marchment). 6-4/205 lbs left winger, just turned 23 a week ago.

He's one of the most extreme cases of a player being a late bloomer that I can think of. He was still playing midget at 17 years of age. He didn't even make the OJHL until he was 18, then only made the OHL at 19. The Leafs signed him to an AHL deal in 2016 and he spent last season in the ECHL. This year he's earned a spot with the Marlies and has 21 points in 37 games as an AHL rookie.

If he makes the NHL he'll have taken one of the strangest roads to the NHL in recent memory.

Seems like the strangest since Brian Rafalski. Undrafted, did 4 years of college then played pro hockey in Sweden for 4 years before skipping the AHL and right into the NHL.

Imagine Marchment and Johnsson assisting on a Connor Brown goal.
An ECHLer, and a 7th round pick assist on a 6th round picks goal.

Babcock has brought that cliche red wing magic with him.

Similar to the Alex Burrows route, although he also became an effective NHL play with 25+ goals.

Sweden/Finland/whatever. I could barely comment on the differences in skill level now let alone back then. :bettman:

I like Borgman. Could be a real solid third pairing guy for us.

So many tools there. I wish I knew a bit more about his story. I wonder how a guy with that build and those wheels slipped under the radar of the entire league. Granted, the size probably came in the past couple of years. But he clearly has skill that didn't just happen yesterday. 'Tis odd.

He's got good tools, not 1st pairing ones. When someone is in that tier of dmen, it's often hockey IQ (performance under pressure, puck management, etc) that's the difference maker. He's been pretty solid in that area. Granted still rough around the edges a bit. But hey, we got him for free. Plus he's got alot of cunt.

Yeah, that's one possibility. Meteoric improvement if so.

We need some cunt on the back if people want to see the back side of Polak. Like it or not, Babcock isn't going to roll 8 deep with polite puck movers. Nor should he, IMO. The new NHL is soft, but it ain't that soft.

I agree he doesn't have top pairing upside. I wonder if the hockey IQ thing isn't just a matter of him not receiving the right coaching and feedback, perhaps because he wasn't considered a serious prospect. Or, is that what was missing in the first place? I suppose we'd have to find someone intimately familiar with Swedish hockey to get the shakedown.

Only problem for Borgmann moving forward is:

Rielly - xx
Gardiner - xx
Dermott - xx

He'd do well to learn how to play on the right side. Or maybe Dermott should be groomed for that?

I wish the Leafs would just move one of them to their off side. It is preferable to have guys play their strong side, but when the gap in ability is considerable I think it is dumb to go with the strong side option.

Could also be an exposure thing. He was with Timra who got relegated out of the SHL the season before his draft year(and couldn't crack the club). He got out of there a year later and signed with Vasteras(another Allsvenskan club). Then he got signed by HV71 and got some major exposure and ended up second in points behind Almqvist(think TJ Brennan) on the eventual league Champions.

In leagues where the defenceman has more time and space it is easier for them to play their off wing. In the NHL a backhand clearing pass is seldomly successful.

Rielly - Carlson
Gardiner - Dermott
Borgman - Zaitsev

Looks pretty good but is relying a lot on Dermott. I mean we're getting by with Zaitsev playing in the top four right now and if Dermott struggles Zaitsev just goes back to that, though I'm fairly confident that Dermott couldn't be as bad as Zaitsev even playing on his off side.

Marlins have three All Stars: Sparks, Johnsson, and Ben Smith.

Larry Brooks has Sheldon Keefe as a candidate for the Rangers’ coaching job.

Grunny Grundstrom with 2 assists and 5 SOG for the Marlies. That's now 4 G + 3 A in 8 AHL games, including last year's playoffs.

And look at some of these names in the lineup this afternoon:

Kristian Pospisal
Derian Plouffe
Jeff King
Joshua Winquist
Erik Bradford
Brady Ferguson
Scott Pooley

... and they still beat Worst Team In The World Laval Rockets for the 11th time in 12 tries. :lou_laugh:

Probably resting guys so they can play the last game at home and one of the fill ins gets two points. Montreal must have the worst NHL/AHL combination in the league.
