Tuned in just in time to see Engvall score. He's been dynamite since coming over.

Engvall and Grundstrom have both been great. But, we need more wingers like we need another hole in the head.

Will be good competition to replace Komarov and JVR.

I hear you, I hope we can parlay some of them into similarly stuck defenders (is that Calgary's music?).

I think a lot of that might come down to whether or not they can find a 4C (or even a 3C) that can take draws shorthanded and PK. Babs has relied heavily on Komarov for PK work the past couple of years because he can line up at C as well. Same with Hyman. Kapanen has shown he can take minutes on the PK on the wing but we need someone to take draws.

I think Johnsson can eat some of Komarov's ES minutes as he hunts pucks down like a champ. That said, Babs is forever going on about how important Leo is to the team off the ice. Hard to tell what they'll do there.

Grundstrom is a wildcard. He was close last camp but he's not ready for big defensive responsibility, which is what Babs used Komarov for - rightly or wrongly. He'll definitely provide some more speed and skill to the lineup and a clear willingness to get his skirt dirty in the corners and around the net.

It really depends on what direction management want to go in this year. Risk a little step back by inserting a bunch of youngins in the lineup or keep the forward momentum going. It's a hard call.

The Goat with a 2OT winner as the Marlies win 2-1 with Sparks making 46 saves. I tuned in for the third onwards and it was a chippy affair.

Walcott and Lynch have been poking and wrestling marlies players constantly.
I didn't see the entire game, but Sparks made some unbelievable reactionary saves.

Timashov is shifty but whenever I've watched him he overhandles the puck either getting himself into trouble or out of scoring areas. Anyone who watches consistently know if that's an actual tendency of his?

I've barely watched any marlies games this year. (so heaping load of salt) From the games I've seen he's a top notch passer/distributer. Unfortunately his other skills aren't as advanced.

Yes, I just hope he is given a real opportunity. He is a stud at the AHL level, and has all of the tools you want in a modern D.

If Dubas is GM I'd expect Holl to be given a fair shake for that bottom pairing spot.

Can he PK? That would give him a huge leg up on Carrick.

Just his size, reach and skating should put him in the conversation with Carrick, IMO. Then again, Carrick had great AHL numbers. The jump is bigger than it looks sometimes.

Yeah, Holl definitely has better tools than Carrick. I mean Babs seems to have no confidence in Carrick and the PK is what gives Polak the advantage in Babs' books. If Dubas is GM I doubt he gives Babs toys like Polak but we do need players on the PK and a third pairing guy who can't play special teams isn't going to see a lot of ice time.

So alienate the coach that's signed for an eternity? Seems like a great way to start a whole bunch of dysfunction.

He is one of the main penalty killers for the Marlies, and someone Keefe has spoken very highly of in that role.

Babs talks a lot about Polak's influence off the ice. Having him around is partly about teaching the talented kids what it takes to get into, and stay in, the league. Once that's done, he won't be as useful. As much as there are articles lately (PPP, I think) trying to explain away Dubas signing and trading for guys like Clune and Justin Johnson, he's done the same thing with the Marlies.

I think there is a middle ground to be had here. You can take away guys like Komarov and Polak without alienating Babs, you just find players that fit the style he wants to employ but don't suck. That was one of the failings of this past summer, IMO. Management did nothing to address the RS of the defense this year which sort of forced Babs to over rely on guys like Polak and Hainsey. I don't blame anyone for Komarov, you could not have predicted that he would drop off as hard and fast as he did this season.

How do you know that the Leafs did nothing to find a right shooting defenceman.

Komarov had a kid, maybe that is the reason.

I'm sure they tried, but they failed and it's not like upgrades on the RS haven't been moved the past two seasons.

He's fine. He got right back up and got into the scrum. I don't think he missed a shift.

The guy who hit him is some piece of shit with 6 points and 442 PIMs in 94 AHL games. If the AHL wants to shed their reputation as a league where goons go after prospects they should give him a stupid suspension, like 20+ games.

Marchment: a chip off the old block?

“He’s a big guy whose skating has come a long way, he’s got great skills but he’s also physical and competitive. When you couple all of that with his size, it makes a very interesting player and it makes him unique to this prospect group that we have,” Sheldon Keefe said. “I was really impressed with just how he took it upon himself to be that physical presence in the series. He really was a difference maker. He eliminated some guys from the series with some big hits where he just got the better of them.”

I like Marchment, I think he will add an element that we don't have without sacrificing too much in the skill department like with Matt Martin and Leo Komarov.

Nice Twin Peaks gif, 'rage.

Does Marchment have NHL upside? I'm really impressed that he's become a contributor on the Marlies. He's looked noticeable out there whenever I've watched (not very often). Hopefulyl he can have a Johnsson like season next year and we see him with an audition at some point towards the end of next season.

Hey, the man came back from two strokes just a year ago. The fact that the guy can even function let alone do not very good colour commentary for professional hockey is pretty remarkable. :colbert:

Re: Marlies and Prospects - Hell no! We won't go!

Just watched the Game in 6 from the Marlies 4-3 win last night. Johnsson makes two very nice reads and passes to set Aaltonen up for a pair. The second one is really nifty.

Obviously it's only an isolated snapshot but, there are a couple of plays that give you a hint of why Holl maybe hasn't been given a bigger shot in the NHL before now. A risky play at the offensive blue line that lead to a breakaway and then a poor read and positioning in the neutral zone allowing a Phantom room to come down the outside and pot one. But, again, just one little snapshot.

Marlies on tsn2. AJ with a great takeaway behind the net and feeds Grundy for an open net.

Yohnny Johnsson looking too good for the AHL at this point. Image

Good call on Lil on the inteference but thought they were letting those go when the Philly D laid out the Marlie at the blueline when he flipped it over his head.
