I'll follow up that tragic situation with something more uplifting and inspirational.

At the age of 24 he's currently tearing it up for the Growlers. (34pts in 41g)

Some context on how he entered the leafs organization.
https://www.pensionplanpuppets.com/toro ... n-ato-ncaa

Scott Pooley is 23, a right wing and has just finished four years at Church of the Holy Cross playing in Division I NCAA hockey. He is listed at 6’2” and 200 lbs and is American, but his father is not.

Paul Pooley, from Exeter Ontario, attended college in America and then had a short pro career in the mid eighties where he played 15 NHL games for the Winnipeg Jets. Since then he’s been a head coach or an assistant or associate coach in the NCAA. He’s currently with Notre Dame, but he spent a long time as coach of Providence College. That just happens to be the place Lou Lamoriello had his first career as coach and director of player personnel. They didn’t overlap at Providence, but Lamoriello is still very connected to his old school.

There’s another Leafs connection too. Before Scott Pooley went to college, he played for the Chicago Mission U18 team. He was the captain in fact, and the Leafs love former captains. But the year he was wearing the C, the Chicago Mission Bantam team was lighting the world on fire, led by William Nylander.

--

The big 6-foot-2 winger is able to drive the net and be a force in the high quality scoring areas. Now with 41 career goals, Pooley has always had a knack for lighting the lamp, but he’s become an even more effective player by heeding the advice of his coaching staff and honing in on the dirty areas near the goalmouth.

“They’ve showed me where my goals are. It’s easy to want to be perimeter, but they’ve preached getting to the tough areas around the net, especially in my case. Showing me how I need to play and how I’m capable of playing,” explained Pooley.

Pooley is an above average skater and has a good shot, but a lot of his goals come from finding soft spots in opposing defenses, and being in the right place at the right time. Thanks to growing up around rinks and being a student of the game, his hockey sense is an asset in those areas.

I happened to read that this morning. I really enjoyed it even though it was Wheeler.

Good on Dubas & co. for looking for those big fish in the tiny ponds (here the forgotten Atlantic conference in the NCAA).

Just noticed they’ve got Engvall playing C. With his size and skating, he could be an interesting fourth line option down the line if he can figure out draws etc. Also just realised he’s only 21. Not sure why I thought he was 23-24.

Also, I wonder what happened to Corrado. He had big holes in his game that needed some work, but he used to be a lot more productive. At 25, he should be a regular in the Marlies lineup and putting in a solid shift. For all the crying when he was moved to PIT he certainly hasn’t amounted to much.

I’m sure some people would say that losing a year of development from Babcock hurt him. I’m not sure he’s being put with players that provide offense on the Marlies since we have actual prospects to develop. I think he’s also injured right now.

I remember listening to a podcast somewhere and they were talking about guys like Leivo or Corrado and other guys like Hainsey. The one guy said, some guys just don’t know how to convince coaches to use them or use them more and that’s an important skill to have.

I have to think that it’s something like that, either in their demeanour or how much of what they’re being told to work on they actually do. Something is not building trust with coaches during workouts, practices, etc. Regardless of what Babs might publicly say.

Didn't expect to see him ever come over.

He's had injuries this season and has only posted six points in 23 total games.

It's hard to know what we have in him. His skillset looks pretty enticing, as he's a big bodied guy who skates well and has good hands. However he's gotten injured a lot and it seems like when he has been healthy he's gotten the short end of the stick playing on shitty teams or under shitty coaches who wouldn't give him the right opportunities or ice time to succeed. IIRC the season after the Leafs drafted him he performed pretty well in games where he was given good minutes.

Dmytro Timashov has quietly posted 41 points in 58 games (age 22), and has been playing at over a ppg pace since being put on a line with Michael Carcone and Pierre Engvall. He may be a player yet fellas.

Babcock specifically singled him out at training camp as a guy who could be pushing for a spot real soon. He's developing at a similar pace to Trevor Moore and should pretty much be where Moore is next season. Also a smaller but feisty guy like Moore too, though he's more of a playmaker than Moore is.

It's nice to see that we have some good LW talent ready to go soon as I can see Johnsson being traded in a package for D-man, Ennis is probably gone after this season and Marleau will also be gone soon.

Also helps ease the loss of Grundstrom.

Eemeli Rasanen terminated his contract with Jokerit and is coming to the Marlies. Good move as he wasn't getting any minutes or opportunity over there.

Know how long they've been on a line? Carcone has 20pts in 29gp for the Marlies. Already set a career high in points.

Rasanen's season was an absolute disaster. Hopefully he puts an end to this stupid trend with Finnish players where they decide to go back to Europe as 19 year olds after they were already in North America. Olli Juolevi and Kristian Vesalainen did it, too.

Development questions aside, it must be appealing to get offered some coin to play near home rather than risk playing in the OHL.

Tolvanen too, though he lit up tht KHL as an 18 yr old, definitely the exception.

Yeah, I mean getting homesick as a teenager in a different continent is something that seems to get glossed over. Apparently that's what Rasanen was struggling with when he was here and supposedly his family had to come and stay for a while in the middle of the season to help him through it.

Sandin is drawing alot of comparisons to Dermott, but Dermott wasn't this good in the AHL at 20 much less 18.

He's tied the AHL record for most points by an 18 yr old D which was set by Voynov. He also accomplished this in 25 less games.

Even for 19 year old defensemen he would have the fourth best PPG ever, after John Carlson, Marek Malik (?) and Erik Brannstrom.

Ahead of 19 year olds like Ristolainen, Burns, Leddy, Suter, and Voynov.

Can we talk about Bracco, yesterday was his 4th straight multi point game, giving him 69 points in 64 games. His 51 assists leads the league, this kid is a special passer.

6-6 winger who scored 61 goals, 113 points for North Bay this season. Surprised he only signed an AHL deal. Usually a guy having a season like that gets an ELC sometime during the winter.

Nice unexpected surprise. Thought for sure another team would give him an ELC and he'd go somewhere with more opportunity, but this is ideal for him as there's no rush to bring him along. Also an Ontario boy so probably a Leafs fan.

Intriguing player, his skating is pretty rough at the moment but to be expected for a guy of his size, hopefully he can improve on that.

This is where Dubas' commitment to developing every player in the organization comes in handy. I bet the work that they've done with Marchment, Moore, and Gauthier really helps with these kinds of decisions. Hell, even Bracco spent his first season mainly doing non-game work like Marchment, right?

4-2 Marlies in the second, but the score is flattering for Cleveland. Marlies are roasting them on the PP, and they should have had a 5 minute PP after Borgman got headshotted.

Sandin now has 34 points in 48 games between regular season and playoffs. Erik Brannstrom, who's a year older, had 32 points in 50 games. Image

On the powerplay, Bracco to Mueller for the backdoor goal.

Engvall curls back on the half wall, dishes it to Duszak who rips it from the point for another goal quickly after the other. Might have deflected off a body or two on it's way to the back of the net.

Couple nice plays by Korshkov. He floats in on the forecheck as one of the Cleveland dmen tries to go D to D. He intercepts the puck from one, tries an inside-out deke on the other. Wasn't much of a backhand shot, but it was cool to see.

This first period has been real sloppy which leads to turnovers. Hasn't been alot of clean breakouts.

Korshkov! First goal! Stretch pass from Sandin which leads to a 2 on 1, and he fires it home.
