They talked about it yesterday during intermission of the Oilers/Sharks or Sens/Bruins; basically they are shifts that exhaust the other team in their own end through sustained pressure

http://www.sportsnet.ca/hockey/nhl/definitive-ranking-nhls-top-23-goalies-three-seasons/

Pretty interesting breakdown of goalie performance. Andersen comes in at #8

It may not have looked that impressive at times, but while setting a career high in games played, Frederik Andersen had the best season of his career while facing tougher shots than he ever has before.

Andersen may not have stolen many games for the high flying, defensively porous Maple Leafs, but he gave them a consistent baseline that was above league average and rarely got run out of the building. If the Leafs were a bit stronger defensively, we’d likely view Andersen’s last season in the .922 save percentage territory, or even higher.

Basically Tyler Bozak is generating less offense/possession after losing a draw.

Bozak is not great at getting the puck back once he doesn't have it anymore, but it's weird that he has generated less possession in every year since his first.

It kinda makes sense in my head being that wilson was block the shot..skate hard recover...carlyle was play like a pk with floater to create mismatch.

What does blocked shots have to do with Bozak's "offense" dropping after a defensive zone faceoff loss?

Its shot attempts differential after draw loss. First season is crazy outlier. Wilson teams blocked every shot attempt and transitioned immediately(as the goal). Carlyle teams played a more traditional style. Wait for the. Shot. Cover. Then battle plus one. It allowed more shots

The point, as I understand it, is how easy it can be to incorrectly attribute the qualities of a good defenceman based on experiences, preferences and observation. It's really no different than anything else. I find the thought process more interesting than the conclusion personally.

Berkshire does a good analysis on the difference between Bozak this season and last, and what may be contributing to his struggles.

It's just Burtch pissing in the wind again about how much he knows better because he can squint really hard. It's ignorant because many teams are tracking stats and they keep them private. Him and so many of his contemporaries so desperately want to be Bill James it's fucking pathetic. I see no thought process at all. A tweet by tweet translation.

-NHL people are stupid.
-They're too stupid for fancy stats
-Normal stats are for n00bs
-They look for skills they want their players to have
-Those skills are irrelevant so some of the guys they find will suck and some will be good.
-NHL people are stupid.
-NHL people sometimes get lucky.
-Getting lucky and finding good players just shows how they're lucky, not good at their job.
-The earlier your success the more likely it is you're stupid.

Management, but it does apply to everyone to some degree.

So hockey people are misled by statistics. Some defencemen who block a lot of shots do so because they can’t get the puck out of the zone. See Luke Schenn and Jeff Finger. Which the hockey people probably are aware of.

I think it's pretty safe to say that there is alot that both the statisticians and hockey people are not aware of.

Feel like this was glossed over but this was a really good read. The Sportlogiq stats are very interesting, too bad we don't have public access to the database.

The first chart seems entirely useless without a lot more context as it goes by raw numbers rather then a percentage of puck battles won.

Honestly have no idea, it seems to be very hard to find information and I don't think it's in a public database anywhere. There's some guys who post zone entry data at the end of the season, I have no idea how they collect it, besides watching every single game and tracking manually.

That Corey guy Snazjader or something (Shutdownline on twitter) is one person who tracks it. I think he tracks it throughout the season and if you donate on patreon or something you get access to his data as he collects it rather then when he posts the season totals.

Apparently, the Kings have 17 games where they are rested and get to play a team coming off a b2b. In comparison, the Leafs only have 6 games like this. Pretty shitty

Edit: Found the graphic, Leafs really get shafted.
