Sparks was defending a disabled person. The girl comments weren't necessary but gotta love how Wheeler just provides this screenshot and then gives context after saying 'not a good look'

Need more context.

Are those numbers adjusted? If so, by what? Even though it's supposed to be taken into account by certain types of adjustments, there could be significant differences in deployment across pairings that are the driving force. And of course, how many minutes are we talking for each of these pairings this season?

To answer my own question I went to Corsica.

1) Those data are unadjusted. After adjusting for zone, score and venue things look marginally better (the other two Rielly pairings don't move but the pairing with Zaitsev gets a 3pp bump).

2) In terms of minutes, the other two pairings are slightly above 50 minutes (which is the default threshold right now) while the Rielly-Zaitsev pairing is over 200.

3) In terms of deployment differences (despite them being accounted for after adjusting the numbers), there's not a whole lot of difference between the pairings. I can't seem to find the quality of forwards but I seem to be recalling that Babs is putting that pairing out there a lot when Bozak's line is on the ice. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ I think that line is dogshit defensively and plays a run and gun kind of game.

Which brings me to here.

That Zaitsev and Rielly pairing is generating a lot fewer corsi events for than the other two pairings and slightly higher corsi events against while generating not terrible scoring chance for numbers but really terrible scoring chance against numbers (which to me seems consistent with the idea that when they're on the ice they get up the ice for a quick shot on goal but then get hemmed in or prolonged periods, but that's just a narrative based on anecdote).

So on one hand, I like my narrative about the style of play being different when Rielly is pairing with Zaitsev than when he's paired with other defenders (by virtue of the forward group he gets to work with). On the other hand, I'd be really interested in looking at how often Rielly is the one moving the puck across these pairings. I'd wager that he moves the puck less when he's with Zaitsev than when he's not.

I think this ties in with what we've discussed before in that Zaitsev is using the boards a lot when advancing the puck. Those pucks don't make it down the ice and the other team starts possession at half rather than at their icing line. So that could help partially explain the large gap in corsi events. The scoring chance gap could be a function of be paired with different forward groups (I'm thinking Rielly and Zaitsev are out with Martin's line and Bozak's line, both of which allow lots of scoring chances against but only one of which generates decent scoring chances for (both have terrible corsi numbers)) across the pairings.

My apologies for not answering sooner but I suppose that's moot now lol. Thanks for the summary, I came across those numbers on twitter and thought they would generate some discussion. My initial thought actually wasn't that Zaitsev was a problem, but rather that Marty is significantly more productive on the top pair than I thought albeit over a SSS.

Dude, don't worry about not answering. It's not like it was a lot of work to go look it up and since I was curious I thought I might as well dig around a bit too. S'all good, homie. :nice:

Does anyone recall whether Rielly played on the left or right when paired with Marincin this year? I was just reminded of something that Hrudey (I believe) mentioned during an intermission earlier in the season about one coach saying that he's more likely to play guys who don't make plays on their off-side since the guy isn't going to make a play anyways. Regardless, When played with Marincin, Rielly is the guy moving that puck if it's possible. I really think that Zaitsev just hasn't figured out how to move the puck or to simply move the puck to Rielly, while Marty knows that he's not supposed to be the guy doing that. Also, Marty does seem to be pretty good defensively and it doesn't look like Zaitsev is quite as capable in that respect.

I somehow missed this post until today. Wonder if that has held up? His scoring has dipped a bit lately as he's not really generating many shots 5-v-5 and he was shooting 25% or something ungodly like that for a bit. It would make sense that if teams have cottoned on that he's happy to take that shot from the top of the left circle that they're gumming up the lane and he's getting worse looks, which would help explain some of the drop in percentage, outside of just luck/averages.

He'll have to learn or he won't keep scoring. What I don't see in him - yet - is that dogged determination to get to good areas like OV had (and still has when he decides to) and Crosby has. They're going to get to the net, like it or not. He's a big kid, he could be a lot more forceful about it.

DTMAboutHeart does a lot of heavy stats stuff for hockey. He was a big driving force behind the new "expected goals" model which is a superior metric to shot attempts.

As it stands, the Leafs are #1 in expected goals for, along with 5v5 shot attempts. Unfortunately, they are also one of the worst teams in shot attempts and expected goals against. Still, they should be competitive throughout the year, and if they can tighten things up they might just squeak in.

There's also this article

https://hockey-graphs.com/2016/12/02/ho ... -playoffs/

From this chart we can see that after just 20-25 games, the playoff teams mostly separate themselves from the pack. Of the 107 teams above 50% in both shot attempts and expected goals on Dec. 1, 81 (or 76%) go on to make the playoffs. Conversely, only a third of teams below 50% in both metrics wind up playing in the post-season.

Since 16 of 30 teams make the playoffs every year, the baseline for predicting who will make it is 53%. With this baseline in mind, it’s clear that shot attempts easily surpass this threshold independently of expected goals (both of the right hand quadrants are well above 53%).

What's the per hundred square feet?

That red spot from the blue line must be Gards getting his shots through. Wonder if that dark blue spot would be someone on the PP not getting it through.

It's 5v5 so both spots I was looking at. I was assuming it was the PP, especially the dark blue spot (phols old PP spot)

Since it's 5v5 that dark red by the blue line would be a LD that's getting a lot of shots through. Either MFR or Gards, maybe Hunwick. I'll guess Gards as I've noticed a distinct improvement from him. I could be wrong. Now I need to know who's responsible for the red hot spot. I'll be paying close attention to this.
