It would be more fun to get karlsson..mainly because it would make snes fans want to die.

I don't even know where an acquisition cost starts for him.

All your picks and several of your players?

It would probably cost Nylander/Marner + Liljegren + 1st 2018 + 1st 2019 or something like that.

If he gets dealt by the trade deadline, it's gotta involve an extension with the new team. Otherwise it's a hell of alot to give up for a rental. A beast rental though.

fyi: he has one more season after this one. so he isn't technically a rental and the team trading for him can't sign him to an extension until the summer.

I don't think there is a chance Ottawa moves Karlsson before the draft, and at that point he will be a one year rental.

I might be wrong, but pretty sure when twitter was losing its shit a few of us here said Polak would either sit, or have drastically reduced minutes as soon as Zaitsev came back.

Its a long fuggin' season, twitter. Stop yer worrying.

I thought babs would continue his attempt to 'spread out the talent' by putting Dermott with Carrick.
Because the game is at home, he's probably going for the stack. Getting 2 solid pairings and getting last change in against Tavares/Barzal.

I need to see this for more than 3 games in a row before I get really excited because we have all season how quick Babs is to revert back to his preferred combinations, but this is an encouraging sign.

I think Polak's role depends on Carrick not shitting the bed at this point. But once Mo is back there isn't room for either of them (unless Borgy is out, maybe?)

Just got to hope the Leafs go on a run with these new lines. They looked quite a bit better against Chicago and Dallas so hoping that continues.

Dermott-Carrick was a very good pairing, I'm not sure Borgman-Carrick will be as good. But yeah, I think Borg will take a seat once Mo returns, Babcock really values the whole handedness thing and he has already scratched Borgman a few times to keep Polak in.

Though, I wish we'd just play Borgman. Pretty sure he played the right side a lot in Sweden.

Rielly-Hainsey
Gardiner-Zaitsev
Dermott-Borgman

Pretty solid group.

What a difference a good young D is. Dermott is dynamic . Small sample, but he looks like he'll easily be a good top 4.

I bet his zone entries are real good. LOB?

Sure, he's not even 55 and he's one of the most decorated hockey coaches ever, but I'd fire Babcock in a second if it meant having the fourth line I wanted. I can't believe they just gave away Mark Arcbello like that.

Thinking of the days when young players developing through the organization that I was interested in were; Schenn, Kulemin, Brad Ross, Blacker, Stu Percy, Finn, Biggs...

Then in comes Matthews, Marner, Nylander, Dermott, Rielly, Kadri, Brown..

Carlo would have been a better pick (and maybe Aho, although he wouldn't fit on the club). A long list of nothing after that, though. I'd take Dermott over much of the later first round as well.

And we moved from 29th to 34th to get Dermott while also picking up Dzierkals. Dermott is the best prospect picked in that range (Dzierkals may be worthless tho)

I think Dermott will be better than Carlo as well. A lot of people bitched about not taking Konecny but at this point he's more of the same in terms of what we already have and I think Dermott will have a similar or better impact as a defenseman.

Also, according to Chris Johnston the Leafs are gauging the market for Matt Martin.

^ Hopefully they are also gauging the waiver market for Polak because after tonight I think it's clear that we have at least 7 better options internally.

Only 3 points back of Boston, but 4 less games to make them up. Doesn't matter though - points are important, games-in-hand are overrated.

If we say that Boston will get 6/8 points in those games, that puts us at 9 points back with 30 games left. Doable.

Reading an article in The Athletic where Pronman talks to some AHL All-Stars. He's talking to Vande Sompel here:

Vande Sompel: I remember coming in for my 17-year-old season, at the start of it D.J. Smith was the head coach at the time in Oshawa. He pulled me in and said he was going to pull a wild card or something, I don’t remember the exact word he used. He was going to put me up front on the penalty kill. He called it the power kill. It was fun, and it stuck with me through junior.

I wonder if we could see Dermott used that way at some point. Kind of interesting.

Last year we had games in hand on Boston forever, until we didn't and they beat us for the final divisional spot. And that was with sweeping them in the season series (all regulation wins) too.

To be honest that's something that I only see working in junior.

Yeah, I could see that given how wide the distribution of talent is at the junior level.

There also seems to be some suggestive evidence that penalty kill success is mainly about systems and less about specific personnel. Not that personnel doesn't matter or that there aren't outliers who can single-handedly change a PK (Gill, Chara, etc.), just that personnel seems relatively less important on average at the NHL level. Given that, there probably aren't huge gains from replacing a PK forward with a defender. Though, it might be a worthwhile strategy if you're leading a game late, just like you might want to go with 3F-2D on the PP if you're leading a game late.

You need to be agile, have good lateral movement, good iq, and a good stick.
Considering after Z and Hainsy there isn't really another top notch pk dman, I'd keep Dermott between dots.
Could work for other teams depending on personnel, but its something that likely gets used in the lower levels of hockey only.

I love that term "power kill" though lol.

The Leafs have much better prospects than him on the wings.

Kappy is outshining him for starters. I find it hard to imagine Kapanen going back down at this point.
I don't think Sosh supplants anyone on last nights roster tbh.

Me neither, I would also place Johnsson and Leivo ahead of him on the depth charts.

If we say that Boston will get 6/8 points in those games, that puts us at 9 points back with 30 games left. Doable.

Last year we had games in hand on Boston forever, until we didn't and they beat us for the final divisional spot. And that was with sweeping them in the season series (all regulation wins) too.

I’d hazard a guess that 4 less games down the stretch are more beneficial than home ice advantage in game 7.
