Would we have run into similar problems with his partying here to the point where management would want to move him out or would we have waited it out and let him grow like we did with Naz?

When he was acquired:

He really only had one bad season out of 4 in Columbus. The stories of his demise are greatly exaggerated.

If I'm interpreting it correctly, that's pretty impressive for MFR. Granted, it doesn't tell you anything about ice time and sometimes the d-men getting the toughest assignments aren't necessarily the ones listed as #1 d-men but it's still impressive when contrasted against his listed peers.

Yeah MFR is showing strong shot metrics relative to his teammates in tough zone starts against strong competition. Compared to these other top defenders he's playing relatively few minutes per game (shown by the size of the circle) but also his results are really, really impressive compared to those peers.

If his results are impressive against these defenders who may or may not be facing the toughest matchups or zone start situations on their team, then think about how impressive his results would be when compared to his tough matchup brethren.

I'd also add that Rielly is probably in the left tail of the partner quality distribution for 1D in the league.

If Leafs fans know anything, it's that the worst punishment a team can face is falling in no man's land. With that said I hope the Canadiens go on a long winning streak.

To be honest, I think we kind of got lucky there with Marner. It was one hell of a draft year and Arizona decided they needed a big centre in Strome, letting a guy talented enough to go #1 in a lot of other draft years fall to us.

Not sure why the list goes to 2013 only but it's pretty hit and miss. In strong draft years you can end up with guys like Marner and Jones but in weaker draft years you can get a guy like Griffin Reinhart, or Adam Larsson who is not terrible but not that great either.

Obviously it's hit and miss depending on the draft, but I'd rather the habs not even have that opportunity.

If JVR hits 40 goals, he will be the first player in NHL history to do so while averaging under 15 minutes a game. Needs 6 in 8, not impossible but it will be tough.

Van Riemsdyk is 290th in the league in ice time and 11th in goals scored.

Scheifele has played one more minute than JVR in 21 fewer games.

I was starting to curb my expectations a bit because I wasn't too impressed overall with how the team had been playing for most of the season; they were winning games but it looked very, very ugly at times with them relying a lot on Freddy to bail them out. However, their last game against Boston, and the two games this week (despite that shitty 3rd period vs TB) were a big reminder of the talent level of this team and what they can do when they are clicking. It helps too that Babs optimized the line-up; moving down Komarov and moving up Marner has made a world of difference as well as calling up Travis Dermott and giving him a permanent spot. Also helps that we have a real 4C now, and Babs no longer has an issue with scratching Martin if need be (though Martin has been good). At this point I am just ready for playoffs and excited to see what they have in store.

The entire league is soft now. There literally isn't one tough team. There are only four players in the entire league with 100 PIMs. Florida is the most penalized team in the league with 842 PIMS. In 03/04 the least penalized team had 894 PIMs. And that was when the refs wouldn't call any actual penalties.

Tom Wilson is, get this... legitimately one of the toughest guys in the league. :rudy:

The goons disappeared, and for some reason the power forwards, agitators and hard nosed defensemen did too.

12. Word out of the GM meetings is Calgary GM Brad Treliving will look to add a first-round pick in this year’s draft. The Flames traded their 2018 selection to the Islanders in the Travis Hamonic deal, and will try to replace it. That would likely mean a major move, but the way this season is ending necessitates something big.

He's a better RD according to Flames fans. He's mostly been playing the left side the last couple years because of Hamilton and Hamonic/Wideman.

Thomas Malthus wrote:Hamilton is the guy I want.

I think he's one of their few untouchables (with maybe Gaudreau, Tkachuk and Monahan). You'd have to be crazy to trade a 6-6, 25 year old top pairing RHD on his fourth straight 40+ point season.

I could see a Brodie trade because his game has fallen off since they moved him to LD and they have more right side D than they can use (Hamilton, Brodie, Hamonic, Andersson, Stone, plus Adam Fox coming soon). If they want a first rounder, Brodie seems like an obvious trade chip.

I'm undecided on Brodie.

This is 5v5 data from the past two seasons. One of these two players is TJ Brodie. Any guesses as to a) which one? and b) who the other player is?

Same thing for this one.

Brodie is on the left in both cases and in both cases it's Zaitsev on the right. Pretty much the same story with Hainsey except instead of looking comparable in the first image Hainsey looks much better than Brodie and looks similar to Zaitsev in the second one except being better than Brodie on the entry defense piece.
