Chia is doing more for league parity than the salary cap.

Whats this about Kyper talking about Matthews and Babs at odds with each other? Or is he just trolling me?

Did you forget what the Toronto media is like after defeat? Gardiner, Andersen, Matthews, and Nylander are going to have their names dragged through the mud the next few days.

Dellow has an interesting piece at the Athletic where he compares Boston and Toronto's possession numbers in different game situations: on-the-fly shifts and shifts that begin after each faceoffs outcome in all three zones.

He notes that in terms of on-the-fly shifts, the Leafs spend the same amount of time in that situation and are just as successful as the Bruins. So then, the massive gap in possession numbers for the Bruins must come off of game situations that have more structure, and they do.

In particular the Leafs are much worse than the Bruins after defensive zone wins and neutral zone losses. I'm sure this isn't a surprise, we've all seen how much the Leafs struggle with breakouts over the season and not just against Boston (though it's noticeably worse when other teams have aggressive forechecking). He then throws in some video of Leafs and Bruins shifts after defensive zone wins to contrast them.

His conclusion is that the Leafs should make sure that they're getting the most from the players they have before they think about trading for defensive help. He's not sure that the team isn't getting everything out of who they have but obviously defensemen matter a great deal on the breakout and the Bruins entire defense had better numbers after defensive zone wins this year (excepting a brief appearance by Dermott). I'm not convinced that the entire Bruins defense is better than ours and I definitely think this is something that can be improved without needing to make a trade.

The failings on structured play is on the coaching staff in my books. I know that the players need attention to detail, but we're not saddled with only fuckheads and shitheads now. We have players with high hockey IQ that should be capable of doing this and you can't tell me that Babs doesn't have buy in. Babcock & co. need to really up their game in certain areas, and this is one.

Likely a tiny piece of a larger conversation taken completely out of context.

Matthews isn't a stupid. He's not going to start throwing shade at his coach or teammates.

Twitter sucks. Social media was a mistake, and we need to stop spreading this trash.

It was tongue in cheek, though both Marner and Matthews said it, and clearly enjoy playing with one another. Personally, I think we are way better when we balance our lines.

Also said he doesn't know whether Nylander will play C next year, and that it will depends on how the rest of the team looks.

Or could be the recognition that Mitch is a play generator and Matthews as a sniper would benefit greatly from that creativity.

Right, but if he plays with Marner, that means a RW has to come off of his line, which is Nylander.

I haven't watched the presser yet but it could've been something as simple as a response to "Mitch has been playing well this year. Would you like to play more with your team's leading scorer?"

A rather innocuous reply taken completely out of context.

Figured he was injured. All that was missing is our franchise center dominating. If Matthews was on, the Leafs would have won easily. It's coming.

I think it's nice he did all that work, and it's totally informative, but who is actually having that particular discussion (i.e. trading Nylander) for serious?

I'm optimistic that the days off bs old school signings like Polak and Matt Martin are done. I fully expect the decisions of this organization to be more analytics driven moving forward.

I'm very curious to see how Dubas addresses the holes on the roster this off-season (RHD & 3/4C). I'm also curious if the organizational philosophy at the draft will be any different.

Gotcha. I'm pretty sure that already factors into the process. Not sure how much or how we'd know whether there was more of it happening. Though Dubas has signed guys like Clune, Gudbranson and JT Johnson in the past.

This isn't a knock on Lou or Hunter, as I am fond of both, but there have been rumors for a while now that there were just too many different chefs in the kitchen in the Leafs front office. That is not to say that the Leafs did not factor analytics into their decision making, because it is clear that that played a large role in a few acquisitions, and even their strategy with overagers at the draft. However, it seemed like there were also decisions that went against the grain which speaks to the differing philosophies. I think with Dubas in charge (assuming it is him), we will see a more consistent game-plan. Just my .02

Curry Rage wrote:Though Dubas has signed guys like Clune, Gudbranson and JT Johnson in the past.

You may be right, but I'm not sure how much we can read into those acquisitions given the difference between the AHL and NHL. Like it or not, you have to have some players that can mix it up in the AHL because other teams still do.
