From Friedman's 30 thoughts:

7. It’s believed Minnesota has asked teams interested in Charlie Coyle, Nino Niederreiter and Jason Zucker to take Tyler Ennis as part of the package.

I would take on that contract in a nano second to any of those guys. Preferably Nino, but Zucker and Coyle are excellent adds as well.

Based on what you know of Dubas, do you think he makes that Kessel trade again? Leafs are going to need to make some moves in the near future, and that one doesn't exactly inspire confidence...

Justin Bourne

@C C. Well, what's interesting with that trade is, they accomplished a few things. They wanted to suck that year, and if they keep Kessel, they probably don't get Auston Matthews. The other, is that Dubas didn't exactly have final say there. I know he didn't want to retain salary, and I also know they were offered a different package that he preferred. I wouldn't consider that a Dubas deal, necessarily, even though his voice was involved in the discussions

Dawid W.

Does Matt Martin start the season a Leaf next year? Super popular in the room but also seemed to wear out his favour with Babs. Do the Leafs keep him as a counter measure to the Tom Wilsons of the NHL or is he an Islander soon?

Justin Bourne

@Dawid W. Dubas, from the beginning, did not like that contract. And the team is so deep at wing, it's tough to justify healthy scratching $2.5 mill of cap space like 50 times in a season. There would be teams who'd have interest in Martin, I suspect. (And I suspect the Leafs would be happy to keep him if he made $1.25 and was OK with not dressing every night.) The probably ship him out at some point for almost no return, just the cap space. Only reason I could see him staying this next season is just that they have so much cap room. Almost no chance he's on the team 2019-2020

Nino is the obvious one. Putting him aside, Coyle would be a nice get. Doesn't really have that offensive acumen or high ceiling. But he's very versatile. Does a little bit of everything. I just wonder how his draws will be. This past year he was 52%. The previous two though he was mid 40s. Hopefully he's learned a thing or two.

I still want Matthew Peca for that 3/4 hole.

With the amount of goalies that are available in free agency and trade...the worry-o-meter of forcing one of Sparks/Pikard through waivers isn't very high at this time.

Apparently the Flames are looking to unload one of: Hamilton, Fox or Andersson. I would love all three, but lean towards Andersson because he is unproven, and doesn't have the same hype as Fox which should lower his trade value. Plus all of Andersson's underlying numbers suggest that he is ready to make a big impact in the NHL, much like Dermott last season. Connor Brown may be enough to get it done.

I think they view him as their best trade piece to improve their forward depth, and they are loaded in young up and coming D (Valimaki, Andersson, Kylington and Fox). I also wonder if there are some dressing room concerns there as well because this is the second time in his career he appears to be the odd man out despite great on ice production, a favorable contract and being on the right side of 30. Regardless of the reason, I have long thought that the Leafs and Flames lined up well as trade partners, both have an abundance of what the other needs.

Leafs, Dallas, Sharks are the top 3. He's also going to speak with Tampa and LA but their chances are more remote, plus I'm not sure about LA's cap situation now that they signed Kovy, and Tampa can really only do a one year deal unless they make some huge trades.

I think Marleau is a lock to stick next to Kadri, but perhaps a Johnsson - Tavares - Marner line? And depending on match-ups you could give favorable ice time to either that line or the Matthews line.

I don’t really think an 8th year means as much as people think. He will still get a contract in 7 years, from a much bigger salary cap.

I think it will be like the Durant situation where he confirmed that he will not rerurn shortly before announcing his new destination. That said, if he does make it to July 1st he won't have to announce anything, if he forfeits the 8th year he clearly isn't re-signing.

The key date for me is Wednesday, he will likely take a day to digest the meetings, and at that point we should know if leaving is a real possibility or if he is just feeling out the process like Stamkos.

Are the teams confirmed?

Arthur Staple who is the Isles beat reporter was the one who reported it. He's very respected and only reports things if they have substance so if he's saying it it's pretty much confirmed. I believe LeBrun also said the same thing.

If there is serious interest in Bozak I hope he signs elsewhere. Need or not, it would be idiotic to commit more than 2 years to him at this point, I would much rather shift Nylander and try to sign a top 6 wing replacement like Neal, Nash or Perron.

It's clearly not all about money for JT because he is not meeting with the teams that could offer him the most money. I think for him to leave Long Island, one of the teams he is meeting with is really going to have to sell him on the idea that they can win multiple cups with him in the fold.

Well, if he hasn't signed by Friday, then he's definitely gone, cause that's the deadline for the Islanders to give him that 8 year deal. Don't see why he would pass on 8 years for 7 if he's staying with the Islanders.
