This year Jake looks like the caricature some people paint of him. Just horrendous out there.

He's always looked Jake-yll and Hyde but previously his on ice results were very strong. This season they're abysmal.

Reilly was terrible last year and this year his results have been amazing. What is the one common theme between Reilly last year and Gardiner this year?

If you're trying to insinuate Zaitsev, Gardiner-Zaitsev played well to the end the year last year and were a strong pairing against Washington.

Also Rielly looked really good last year once he healed from his high ankle sprain.

Im guessing hes implying Gardiner is taking on the tougher minutes, and mo is sheltered. But i havent watched enough to know.

Gardiner and Zaitsev took on tougher minutes at the end of last year like LOB is saying and they acquitted themselves well. Zaitsev was a drag on Jake's possession numbers but I think that's more that Jake wasn't playing toughs without Zaitsev. Zaitsev was on toughs all year last year and it was Mo and Jake who swapped out for easier minutes.

That said, Zaitsev was great to start the year. He had a whole new level of offense and confidence with the puck. Lately though he's gone right back to his Polak-esque safe plays that give theh puck right away again (icings on long passes, not skating it out as an option, chip of the boards to centre, or high off the glass). I'm not sure if this was during the Babcock tightening or if it was just something he decided to do in response to the loose play of the team. But he looks like he has more to give out there, I hope we get to see the Z from earlier this year again because boy did he look dynamic.

The biggest issue is a lack of break out in these bad games lately. There are a lot of shoot around the boards, hail mary passes, icings etc.

Matthews gets down low and his line gets out of the zone. Every other line seems to think 90' passes are easy in the NHL. Get out of their own end and everything else will come together.

I thought of that as well but I believe Rielly is still getting hard matchups this year based on the numbers out there. It is more even between him and Gardiner though whereas last year Gardiner was pretty sheltered for the first 60-70% of the year.

I've been disappointed with Zaitsev recently as well. Not sure what happened there, he clearly has the skill to make great passes and jump into the play, he showed that a ton in the KHL. Hopefully he turns it around. I recall he was leading the Leafs in expected goals % a few games back but not sure where he is with that now.

I'd rather have Gunnar than Polak, but if we had him back he'd still be just another mediocre defenseman that would need to be upgraded. In St. Louis he was immediately moved down the lineup and last year he was all the way down to 13 minutes per night, 7th best on the team.

We just need a #1, then we won't have to worry how mediocre our mediocre dmen are.

Cherry on about the "Martin" effect. Fake news? I concur.

They were shit before they left, but this is the 4th game in six nights on a western road trip, and 6th game in 10 nights. Statistically teams get killed in these situations.

Gunnarsson would be top four for the Leafs, easily. He was the second best on the team before he was traded and things haven’t improved much since then.
