In the long run, I'd rather be certain that Matthews is 100% (or as close to it as we can ensure) before throwing him back in.

I'm happy to let them figure out how to grind out games without Matthews so that when he comes back they've got some idea about how to play. Of course I hope he's better soon. Though I get the sense their new sports science guys are super cautious. And why wouldn't you be at this stage of the season with the most important player the franchise has had in 20 years?

Even though we are 3-0 without Matthews, we have been horribly outshot over that span and looked pretty terrible at times. Hopefully Andersen's hot play continues.

Those are down, but so are the Leafs scoring chances, and not by a relative amount either.

It's really annoying that Leivo is coming out of the lineup for Soshnikov. If he can't slot in above him where does he fit on this team?

To be fair, it's not like Leivo has really blown us away during this stint. He's had flashes where he looked good, others where he was bad, and some where I forgot he was playing at all. Do I want him in more than Martin? Yeah, but since Martin isn't coming out why not see what Sosh has?

The first period wasn't bad but the second might be one of the worst periods I've ever watched in terms of entertainment value. Seems like there's a stoppage every 5 seconds

For the last ten years I've been hearing Blue Jackets, Thrashers, Jets, Hurricanes and Pengs fans bitch about how bad Ron Hainsey sucks. So far he's been a steady presence next to Rielly and a PK monster.

This Hunwick/Hainsey swap has been massive for the Leafs. Hainsey is more effective on the top pairing than Hunwick was on the third pairing.

Hainsey is a defensive presence, on pace for nearly 40 points. Mo’Reils is on pace for 65+ points.

Andersen has been about as good in the month of November as he was bad in the month of October. He pretty much won this one by himself.

Hainsey is a beast. I love how steady he is for that top pairing. Zaits has been slowly getting better after a so-so start to the season (leads the league in blocked shots or something I heard). Gards had a decent start to the season but looked in full drunk mode last night. He just has no confidence on the boards or behind the net.

Sosh was thoroughly underwhelming in his debut. Maybe nerves? Not sure. He's better than he showed last night though.

Borgman is still awesome with limited minutes. He did some skating out of trouble last night that I didn't think he had in him.

Not to harp on Gards though. He's been really good this season so far. Just looked fucking awful last night. He just can't handel strong forcheckers. He's always going to be prone to brain farts of the worst variety but he manages to make up for it most nights with all around top end zone exit skills.

The problem is that the skilled plays have been less frequent and he is averaging a boneheaded play per game.

His underlying metrics do not look very good this season which is uncharacteristic for him. Hoping he fares better as the season goes on...

He was playing very safe to start the season which is understandable, it's been really impressive watching him recently though. He's getting more comfortable and he's excellent at reading the play and knowing when to jump up into the rush. He has really underrated wheels for a guy of his size and a pretty hard (but inaccurate) shot. He has a lot of potential, it will be very interesting to see what he develops into over the next few years.

Yeah, keep having to remind myself he's only 22. Jonas Frogren he is not.

I like Borgman's physicality. It's a nice element that we don't have a lot of on our blueline, aside from Carrick and Polak when he slots in (which is usually at the expense of either Borgman or Carrick).

Yup. Boyle took a run at him in the first and bounced right off. He's solid.

Watching Boyle last night really cemented for me how much I want to upgrade on Moore. Moore simply treads water, he is not awful like Ben Smith but if he's not winning his matchups he needs to get lost.

I’m confident that like last season the 4th line position will be bolstered at the deadline.
