Game 1: Canada's Team Maple Leafs visit Boston Dick Lickers - Thursday 7:00 PM CBC

Post #1 by Honus Joglund » Sat Apr 07, 2018 10:02 pm

Tampa Bolts move into first in the division tonight with a loser point against Carolina. Boston has a chance Sunday night against Florida to move back ahead into first.

Florida with a fresh dagger in their hearts and the Bruins having a shot at 1st, I'm expecting a first round matchup against TB.

JVR, Bozak, Kadri, Komarov, Gardiner. I think those are the only guys we have on the roster still who were a part of the 2013 playoffs. MFR was a Marlie at the time.

Bergeron to the Leafs is what Paul Pierce is to the Raptors. Hopefully that will change this year and Matthews will become that to the Bruins instead.

Sign me up. I want Naz to cunt him good.

If Babcock insists on playing Leo, now's the time for Leo to channel his earlier self and smash into everything in the wrong-coloured jersey like a one-man demolition team. I'm okay if that "accidentally" includes a zebra once in a while.

Bozak didn’t play in game 7 and that was part of the problem.

The game has changed a lot simply in those 5 years, Leafs definitely have the potential to wear down the Bruins D with speed.

Hopefully Andersen is better this time around, he was simply average against the Capitals.

There's actually one more player I'd forgotten about who was around for the 2013 playoffs but we won't be seeing him this go-around: Lupul.

I appreciate the encouragement. You guys are sweethearts. I'll try. I've got a bit more time on my hands in the next few months but not a lot. I used to be able to sit down and watch the games and get something written in the mornings. I just don't have the time these days and I often don't get to do more than watch the Game in 6.

Did y'all know that Mitch Marner has 9 points in 4 games against the Bruins this year?

Bergeron, Pastrnak, and Krug have 4 in 4 against the Leafs (Marchand with 3).

If Kadri/Matthews outplay Bergerons line, the series is ours.

Whereas in the past I would've said the gameplan should include running Chara to wear him down and keep him occupied, I'd say that now, with his age and this Leafs team, the object should be to make him skate as much as possible. I'd be putting the puck behind him over and over and over and watch him suck air on the bench. He's down to playing about 23 minutes a night now. I'd probably try Matthews and Hyman against him for a bit as Matthews has the size and the speed to give him problems and Hyman just works that much harder than everyone else.

No one outplays the Bergeron line, at least not over the last two years. If we can come close to breaking even there though I think we have the edge on lines 2 through 4.

I think the series will hinge on the play of Freddie. We need him to be at least average and we've got a good shot. If he continues palying the way he has lately...it's gonna be a tough slog.

I hear you EB about that Bergeron line but they've kicked the shit out of both the Matthews line and the Kadri line this season. Though, I'm not sure if we've faced them with Mitch on the Kadri line.

Given our forward depth if we can play that top line to a draw that might be good enough. Especially if our PP is firing and our PK returns to early season form.

Tuuka Rask is susceptible to mental collapse. JVR will go to his previous Bruins beast mode and defeat them all on his own.

I expect playoff Kadri to be more of a force. Especially since the whistles will likely be put away a bit.

Looking at the splits from the past 2 seasons, it has basically only been the Bergeron line that has had success against us.

Pastrnak, Marchand, Bergeron with 8, 7, 7 points in 8, 7, 7 games (although Pastrnak and Bergeron are -2 each and Bergeron is +2). 4 of Pastrnak's points were on the PP.

So, really, Bergeron is the killer here.

Spooner and Moore are next in terms of points for forwards (3 and 2) and obviously they aren't to be worried about. Backes, Heinen, Krecji with 2 points each across 6 games (combined -7). The Bruin's 2nd PP unit has 1 goal against us in 2 seasons.

For the Leafs, Marner, JVR, Nylander, and Kadri have 13, 11, 7, and 7 points (each 8 games played). A combined +20 (Kadri is 0). Matthews also have 5 points in 5 games (+2).

The only minus players in the last 2 years are Marleau (-1) and Hainsey (-2) (excluding Soshnikov, Boyle, Smith, Martin, and Moore... who won't be playing)

BTW, Rask's sv% is .883 in 6 games against us. 1-4-0

Andersen is .923 and 6-1.

Agreed about Freddie being key. I seem to remember Matthews only playing in one game against the B's this year so they really haven't had to adjust to that matchup. That said, they lost the only game he played in and Bergeron had a good night. But, as Eichel says - and we saw in the two recent games with Buffalo - Matthews has a whole lot of "fuck you" in him, so he'll be aiming to shove a bit of that in Bergeron's face. If Matthews makes this his playoff coming out party, things are a lot more even from a matchup perspective.

JVR has always been pretty nuts against the Bruins. 25 pts in 32 games in his career, 14 of those goals.

Playoffs
2013 - 7 gp, 2g, 7 pts
2011 - 4 gp, 3G, 3 pts

He did also play 7 games against them in the playoffs as a rookie in 2010 however he had very limited usage (and again was a rookie) so he only had 1 goal in that series, though it came in that game 7 comeback.

Bozak didn’t play in game 7 and that was part of the problem.

And JVR broke his nose on a dirty hit.

So if they get good goaltending, a good PP, a good PK and the forward depth comes through they have a chance to win?

Looks like this is the Bruins lineup for game 1:

Marchand - Bergeron - Pastrnak
DeBrusk - Krejci - Rick Nash
Heinen - Acciari - Backes
Schaller - Kuraly - Wingels

Chara - McAvoy
Krug - Miller
Grzelcyk - McQuaid

Rask
