Have we actually done anything right at all in these first two games?

Gotta win two at home. Luckily this is where we've been best all year. Historically good for the franchise. There's still hope as long as Fred can rebound.

We need some jam in the lineup while Kadri is out. I'd slot in both Mats Martin and Moore.

Time to send a message. We need to pound the Marchand line into the ground and get him off his game. They are the engine driving the ship right now.

They need better goaltending otherwise none of this other shit will matter. Andersen cannot post a sub .900% I don't care what the defense does in front of him, he needs to be one of, if not the best player the rest of the way.

Eh, I've always enjoyed physical hockey. While I lean towards having a skilled team (skilled and big/strong is obviously the most ideal but hard to acquire), all I really ask is these guys play with heart and full effort. Dermott is a good example, he's not a huge guy and he's very skilled but he fights hard in every puck battle and doesn't make it easy for opposing players. Just because you're smaller doesn't mean you have to be a bitch. JVR is a 6'3 fairy who turned his back to Miller yesterday and let the puck get away in the corner because he was afraid to be hit. Nylander has been the worst, staying on the perimeter the whole time and throwing the puck away after skating around with it.

Finish every fucking check and don't stop skating. If you still lose then so be it, but at least go out with some fucking pride.

Couldn't agree more. You don't need to be a thug to finish a check.

If you hit an opponent whenever they make a play you get into their heads, and they will second guess their options.

It’s already been resolved that the Bruins can high stick a Leaf drawing blood and elbow them in the head but the Leafs are held to a higher standard. Given that Martin may end up causing more problems than he solves.

We have a very talented group of young pussies. In a couple years they will be men and in turn be stronger/more physical.

I have to give JVR some credit. He looks mad and is giving some fucks. Its just not his game. Imo, Babs is misusing him. He should be with Matthews. Big, fast, can cycle, and has crazy good hands around the net.

JVR MATTHEWS MARNER

How the fuck has this not been tried. Powerhouse O line.

Nylander reminds me very much of Kessel. Said this a few times. Skates like the wind, perimeter player, and wicked snapper. Phil is a better playmaker, and is just better. Nylander is far from his potential mind you.

The D and goaltending are killing us. Both horrorawful. Not sure if they are trying to "front" the players around the net but I fucking hate it. Tie up a fucking stick, clear the fucking crease, do something instead of puck watching for fuck sake. Andersen needs to make some saves, big saves. 4 goal on 5 shots, fuck me.

Reffing blows goats.

Babs is being out coached imo. Chasing the matchups, implementing a system that doesn't fit the players he has. Fuck it, let the hounds loose, lets play some fucking pond hockey. That's what they are good at.

I'm just about done with the wingers blowing the zone, and the D throwing grenades into the neutral zone. After it was too late, Babs gave the D the green light to carry it and pinch. Imo, Thats what they should be doing all the time. We have the skaters on the back-end to join/lead the rush and be able to get back. Play to the teams strength, instead of trying to stuff the square peg.

Marner carrying the puck and having two options/legit scoring threats. Especially the way he can get the puck to the net for tips and rebounds. Or saucing some slick passes off the rush. Matthews or JVR taking the puck to the net while the other picking up the rebounds, or two big men working the cycle around the net, Marner there to pick up loose pucks and tossing out front or to the point.

Just one word for it. Deadly.

I don't expect it, but it would be a treat to watch.

I think Babcock tried to respond to the loss of Kadri by making as few changes as he could. Anything radical is likely to take some time to gel. On the other hand, can it be worse?

This team earned 105 points with a certain kind of look to the lineup. I can see why Babs didn't want to completely change the blueprint after a single bad loss.

Skate hard. Physical play also takes a toll on the team doing most of the hitting.

I agree. I just wonder why he has never tried JVR with Matthews. He threw the lines into the blender in the third putting Marleau and Kap with Matthews. I would have like to see the line I suggested.

Then

Hyman Nylander Brown

Two resonsible wingers with Willy at center. Maybe they find Nylander with a good pass when they are plumbing.

Marleau Bozak Kap

Two more respinsible wingers with a weaker D center.

Shelter the shit out of the Matthews line, or if they want to match top lines, run and gun. He has them blowing the zone anyway. Might as well use the horses together.

Could also switch Brown and Kap. Give the 2nd line some serious speed.

It's pretty obvious that the Leafs are going for a balanced approach. It's why every line has a depth player on it, why ice time is relatively evenly distributed in the top 9 and why our skill is evenly split up on both pp units.

I also think it's unwise to tinker the look and style of this team because of two horrible games against Boston. The last time that happened we got stuck with David Clarkson. We aren't a big physical team, that doesn't mean we can't win in this league, we just need to do a better job of exploiting our strengths. That will come with maturity and additions to the right side of the D core.

I understand Babs spreads the talent out. With Knads and Komarov potentially out. He's forced to tinker with the lines. Playing Komarov on the top line is terrible (you bitched about it already) also playing him on PP is retarded (almost everbody has bitched about that).

Blowing the zone against the Bruins, leaving the D exposed to terrible passes and odd man plays after they pick off those passes/dumps is leading to goals. The style isn't working against a good neutral zone team. They looked much better when Babs let the D go and carry it. It was 4-0 tho, too late. Babs better figure out a different style or we're going to be smoked again.

The interesting thing is that we’ve matched up well against them the last two years playing that style.

They’re rattled and not playing their game. Not sure if it’s still inexperience but it’s something.

We’ve proven we can beat these guys.

I don't mean to put it all on goaltending because I understand the team as a whole hasn't been great, but I really think the results are overblown. At ES we have been near even with the Bruins in shot location, shot count and xG%. The big difference has been special teams and goaltending which I hope will correct itself.

hence the problem with fancy stats, they ignore that which is plainly in front of you. Innumerable in front opportunities without coverage down low. No goalie is going to save you from that.

Except my eyes told me the same thing. Again, not putting it all on Andersen, but you can't win with a goalie who has a sub .900s%. If he makes a few more timely saves which he usually does this series is alot different.

Fred was hung out to dry but it's hard not to see that, just like the rest of the team, he didn't look like himself. Or, at least, certainly not like the Andersen who was being mentioned in the conversation for Vezina before a horrific last month.

He didn't look sharp. That's fine and he can afford to be average (his last month was well below average) if the team is going but they clearly weren't and Fred couldn't bail them out. Not solely his fault but it's not not his fault. Were those chances very dangerous? Yeah, leaving 30 goals scorers and former 40 goal scorers all alone in front of the net is decidedly not good. But at the end of the day Fred isn't paid to be average he's paid to be better than that and above average goalies need to make saves sometimes that are difficult and from dangerous places on the ice.

I just watched the highlights again. Both Freddy and McBackup were hung out to dry. Almost comically so.

To be honest, I can't remember seeing such a badly defended game in recent memory.

Eeeeeeeeeeeh. I dunno about that. I guess Plekanec's line is drawing up against Bergeron.

I'm on team Gardiner with Rielly and matched against the Bergeron line. Everythign we've done so far has not worked with neither Hainsey nor Zaitsev handling them and that right side being exploited like blacks in the Confederacy.
