Buy low trade options for this offseason

Post #1 by cawbber » Sun Apr 15, 2018 5:03 pm

We're likely to lose some guys to free agency this offseason and will have some holes to fill. Started wondering about youngish players who have not developed as per their draft trajectories but could benefit from a change of scenery and fit in well with what we're trying to do.

My list thus far:

Max Domi
Sam Bennett
Nick Ritchie

Thoughts and other additions welcome.

I might have interest in Ritchie. Domi gives us more of what we have (smallish forwards) even if he does have a bit more grit in his game. I don't have any idea either way on Bennett.

I would leave the reclamation projects to the teams that have the time to see if they will eventually work out.

Mark Pysyk, Rasmus Andersson, Oskar Klefbom, Jason Spezza and Nino Neiderreiter are guys who for one reason or another I think can probably be had for less than they are worth, but not necessarily for cheap.

Intelligent teams should always be on the look out for cheap reclamation projects. This isn't soccer where you can afford to roster a superstar at every position.

Yeah, I should have clarified what I meant by cheap: relative to their value a few years ago.

Interesting names. I hadn’t considered Niederreiter but he certainly falls into that category.

Klefbom would be nice. Chia is retarded too so perhaps something could work there, though their D is crap as it is so I doubt he guts it even more.

Apparently Brodie could be available? Not sure how much that would cost

There were rumours of Severson being available. If those are true I'm definitely interested. He would be a huge upgrade on the right side of the ice.

Seems like you're splitting hairs really. A reclamation project is someone who was typically given a bigger role on a new team and it didn't work as they're better as a supporting cast type of player. Much like Schultz in Pittsburgh. Leafs need some role players, not stars(well a Franchise RD is always a dream) so this seems like a pretty good avenue for the Leafs to pursue to find a guy asked to do too much on a team and give him a very clear role with the Leafs.

If a top four defenceman on a bad team is considered a reclamation project then look into it.

No need to even think about forwards.

I think it'd be highly unlikely for Tim to make the team next year let alone play a top four role.

Depending on his first half, he may have a good chance to see some games the later half of the season.

Dougie Hamilton on the block? We've heard rumours of this. Maybe not exactly "buy low" but colour me interested.

^ Hamilton is a top 10 defender and young, he's going to cost more than that PT. It would probably take Nylander, but maybe we could get Brodie at a discounted price.

Part of that is age, moving forward I can't think of 10 defenders I would want more. Although even if we are talking right now I would have him in my top 15 and rather easily, he was outstanding with Giordano this year.

This is the play, let's buy low on a rd #1. How you say? With Kadri.

Sign JT and Plekanec. (I really liked the trade from the get go)

Trade Kadri in a one for one for a D.

Hyman Mathews Nylander
Marleau JT Marner
Kapannen Plekanec Brown

Rielly Hamilton (an example)

But there is a Burke Kadri connection, do they need a center?

Its doable in the short term. Mathews and Marner's new deals don't kick in next year.

It was an example of how to get a young top pair Dman from a stupid desperate team, much like Tampa did a year ago.

Even if Bozak and JVR aren't back, those moves probably add 3-4 mil or so to the cap. Then you gotta pay Nylander.

Marleau can be traded. Gardiner likely gone. Can trade Zaitsev to some sucker. We don't have an immovable contract.

Im of the opinion Matthews and JT both get 11 mill
Marner and Bill at 6 to 7 mill

Forward core. Everyone else is on the table. Babcock is the perfect coach to fill in the roster with plumbers.

Cap going forward. (Roughly)

2.5 11 6.5
6.5 11 6.5
1 3 2
1 1 1

For the D, the top 4 will average around 5 mill each.

5 5
5 5
1 1

Goalers

As much as i want to win now I'd rather take the easy plug hole efficiently route and see what we have for another couple years.

No reason you can't do both. The thing I like about JT besides the obvious is that he is the type of player who tends to age very well because he isn't reliant on elite speed or athleticism. He dominated junior as a below average skater who could kill you blue-line in, and he is so good that even when he loses a couple of steps he figures to be an impact player. Plus he is an incredibly hard worker by all accounts, that is someone you give term and dollars too.

You can't keep multiple 11 million forwards on the roster. The ducks have tried it with a pretty good complimentary core all things considered and it hasn't worked. Even in PT's dream scenario, he's spending 9 million on his bottom 6 combined, in a league where decent 3rd liners make like 4 million. His bottom pairing is garbage too, and that team pretty much by definition has no depth to survive injuries.

Claw is right. Besides, why the fuck would anyone look at this team and think the thing it needs is another high profile offensive player? The 11 million you want to give to JT to pay second fiddle to Matthews and to rob Nylander or Marner of PP time could literally get you a couple of top 4 d that are actually needed.
